Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes

By any measure, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., led a full and remarkable life. He was tall and exceptionally attractive, especially as he aged, with piercing eyes, a shock of white hair, and prominent moustache. He was the son of a famous father (Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., renowned for "The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table"), a thrice-wounded veteran of the Civil War, a Harvard-educated member of Brahmin Boston, the acquaintance of Longfellow, Lowell, and Emerson, and for a time a close friend of William James. He wrote one of the classic works of American legal scholarship, The Common Law, and he served with distinction on the Supreme Court of the United States. He was actively involved in the Court's work into his nineties. In Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, G. Edward White, the acclaimed biographer of Earl Warren and one of America's most esteemed legal scholars, provides a rounded portrait of this remarkable jurist. We see Holmes's early life in Boston and at Harvard, his ambivalent relationship with his father, and his harrowing service during the Civil War (he was wounded three times, twice nearly fatally, shot in the chest in his first action, and later shot through the neck at Antietam). White examines Holmes's curious, childless marriage (his diary for 1872 noted on June 17th that he had married Fanny Bowditch Dixwell, and the next sentence indicated that he had become the sole editor of the American Law Review) and he includes new information on Holmes's relationship with Clare Castletown. White not only provides a vivid portrait of Holmes's life, but examines in depth the inner life and thought of this preeminent legal figure. There is a full chapter devoted to The Common Law, for instance, and throughout the book, there is astute commentary on Holmes's legal writings. Indeed, White reveals that some of the themes that have dominated 20th-century American jurisprudence--including protection for free speech and the belief that "judges make the law"--originated in Holmes's work. Perhaps most important, White suggests that understanding Holmes's life is crucial to understanding his work, and he continually stresses the connections between Holmes's legal career and his personal life. For instance, his desire to distinguish himself from his father and from the "soft" literary culture of his father's generation drove him to legal scholarship of a particularly demanding kind. White's biography of Earl Warren was hailed by Anthony Lewis on the cover of The New York Times Book Review as "serious and fascinating," and The Los Angeles Times noted that "White has gone beyond the labels and given us the man." In Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, White has produced an equally serious and fascinating biography, one that again goes beyond the labels and gives us the man himself.

It is always difficult trying to explain to others our inner processes. We all as individuals see the world around us in a very different way, depending on our education, personal experiences, the family and country where we grew up and many other factors that make each person a wonderful unique human being. When I started to write my blog as a personal experience, I showed my writings to some of my friends and they all agreed on the idea that I should share them with others, since there were too many people going through the same events and tests I was going through at those moments, but I just didn't think my blogs were good enough to make them public. So I accepted the idea naming my blog "Dialogs with my inner self" since it was a "chat" I was having with my subconscious mind about the things I felt I needed to pay more attention to, the aspects I had to change in myself and the notes I wanted to be able to re-read from time to time to work on myself. I opened my blog with the hope that other people who could be going through the same doubts and events in their lives, could find some relief in knowing they were not alone in this journey, I was very surprised with the number of people who were thanking me for sharing my writings. I knew then that we are all going through a massive evolution period and that we as humans all share experiences, doubts, joys, fears and everything else. And if we all lean on each other instead of taking advantage of our peers or beating the others to get self-profit, our evolution would be faster and greater. I do hope that this collection of different writings might give you a different point of view and might motivate you to read more on the different subjects I wrote about in my blogs. My gratitude, to all the people who have been beside me, despite the adversities; and to those who have believed in me, despite the circumstances. May the Universe grant you Light and wisdom in your journey to find yourself once more.

Lucid Dreaming

While lucid (consciously aware) in the dream state and able to act and interact with dream figures, objects, and settings, dream expert Robert Waggoner experienced something transformative and unexpected. He was able to interact consciously with the dream observer-the apparent Inner Self-within the dream. At first this seemed shocking, even impossible, since psychology normally alludes to such theoretical inner aspects as the Subliminal Self, the Centre, the Internal Self-Helper in vague and theoretical ways. Waggoner came to realize, however, that aware interaction with the Inner Self was not only possible, but actual and highly inspiring. He concluded that while aware in the dream state, one has both a psychological tool and a platform from which to understand dreaming and the larger picture of man's psyche as well.

And the dialogs continue... My inner chatting is everyday more complex and more colourful. I really enjoy observing the world around me and realising that all those things I have learnt during the years are very true. Those things I focus on become more obvious and that clearly shows how the outside world is a reflexion of my inner images. I am a living proof that once you decide to change your perspective and you start to train your mind to find the brilliant side of everything and you keep an open, positive mind; miracles start to happen in your life.

I know what it is like to go through life alone. Not having any one there to help you go through the darken times. Not having any one to share your life with. As I was writing down things, I also wanted to cover other things that happens in our world. To see if people would think about things, and maybe change the way we live our lives before it will be to late. Most of all, to reach out to those that feel alone in life and don't have no one talk to about their darken times. So they know that there is someone that is out there knows and understand what they are going through. In some way to help. I have had some people read my poetry, they told me it helped them. There was even three people was even thinking about killing themselves. Than when they read my words, it helped them. It saved them. So If my words can do that for others. It is worth it, to get my words out there. I can't sing so I figure, poetry is another way to reach out.

In New Labour's empathetic regime, how did diverse voices scrutinize its etiquettes of articulation and audibility? Using the voice as cultural evidence, Voice and New Writing explores what it means to 'have' a voice in mainstream theatre and for newly included voices to negotiate with the institutions that 'find' and 'represent' their identities.

Writing God and the Self

Contemporary literature has, for several decades and in various guises, been dominated by questions of identity and the self. It has been forgotten that, until the Enlightenment, theological reflection emphasized the close connectedness of the self with God; knowledge of God is essential to knowledge of the self; and vice-versa, correct knowledge of the self is a necessary correlate to true knowledge of God. This has been called the double knowledge. Writing God and the Self examines two literary texts and lives as representative of two antithetical positions. The first, represented by Samuel Beckett's life and his Three Novels, is that the self is independent of God; the second, represented by C. S. Lewis and Till We Have Faces, is that God and the self are intimately connected. Beckett's radical apophaticism about God is shown to be tied to his extreme apophaticism about the self, whereas Lewis's sense of selfhood is demonstrated to be integrally connected to his sense of a personal and self-transcending God. Other voices--Augustine, Teresa of Avila, Charles Taylor, Rowan Williams, Mark McIntosh and Vladimir Lossky--join the chorus of theologians, psychologists, and other thinkers, past and present, that contribute to this exploration of what Christian theology has to say about the insistent problem of the self. Taken together, all these voices articulate a powerful vision of selfhood in relation to God that is desperately needed today.
