This collection of comics from the author of Wine Makes Mommy Clever and Dawn of the Bunny Suicides takes a humorous look at fatherhood in all its glory. Fatherhood is full of ups and downs, quirks and crises. But there is always humor to be found! Featuring 60 all-new cartoons from Andy Riley, Beer Makes Daddy Strong shows the world just how great dads can be: Daddy knows all the best car games (“Who can stay quiet the longest?”), likes to show off his scars (that he may or may not have obtained while running with the bulls in Spain), and is a great cook (when Spaghetti Bolognese is on the menu). Witty and wise, this affectionate tribute is a celebration of fatherhood and all of its joys, confusion, humor, and, of course, beer. Praise for Beer Makes Daddy Strong “This will make you laugh. It is a piece of artwork, really; a collection of cartoons capturing those “dad moments” that can be humiliating, embarrassing or just plain stupid.” —The Daily Telegraph (UK) “Laugh-out-loud tour through life as a first, from the first ultrasound to holiday traffic jams and pipe and slippers time.” —News of the World (UK) “Funny, true, and—speaking as a dad—embarrassingly accurate.” —Chris Addison

Time seems to stand still when we share a meal with family and friends or with strangers. The concept that food releases a chemical reaction enhancing our capacity for tolerance and understanding is a common thread in the stories of this book. They take us from WWII Germany to present-day Europe and America . When the author's daughter, Angie, comes home from school and asks, "Mommy, was grandpa a Nazi?," the author wants to find who wants to know and meets with Angie's teacher, Ruth Singer, who is teaching about the Holocaust. They have much in common, and their love of cooking leads to a lifelong friendship. "Gita's Diary" is about a Polish refugee whose culinary skills help the author's grandmother and her children to survive while the grandfather is in a Nazi labor camp. In "Gentiles Only," Ruth Singer discovers that in the 1950's Jews are not welcome in some Miami Beach hotels. "Forbidden Love" is about Silke, a Norwegian immigrant, who falls in love with Julian, a Black man. She learns that in the 1970's racially mixed couples are taboo in America . They separate, but a cousin's magic cooking reunites them. Paul, an American art student in "Aix Marks the Spot," abandons his prejudice against the Irish when a young Irish pastry chef serves him a delicious dessert. Soon after the 9/11 attack, Claudia, a Catholic Latina, meets Azir, a Muslim, on a cruise ship. In "Plain Couscous" they set aside their religious differences to enjoy each other and Claudia's picnic. "Mutti's Story" and "Vati's Story" helped Angie to understand her grandparents' experiences during WWII. The stories' recipes are listed at the end of the chapter. Complete recipes are in the Appendix.

Pei Yu did not know whether it was luck or bad luck. After living for two lifetimes, he had not been able to live past the age of 20. Pei Yu looked at the pitiful glutinous rice ball and asked, "Tell me, am I your mother?" The little blob nodded. Pei Yu pointed at the shabby thatched cottage behind them and asked, "You're saying that this is our house?" The little blob curled his lips. "Mother, mother, why did you fall so far and become an idiot?" Pei Yu facepalmed and threw the Crown Prince who was following behind him, "Let me introduce you, this is your stupid father." The little blob cried out, "It's over! It's over! Mother really fell stupid! "
