Daily Devotions for People Who Hate Daily Devotions Let's face it. A lot of Christian resources can feel cheesy, out-of-touch, and a little boring. But when Skye Jethani started doodling and writing up some of his thoughts about God, his Twitter and email list blew up. What If Jesus Was Serious? is a compilation of all-new reflections (and hand-drawn doodles) from Skye. He takes a look at some of Jesus' most demanding teachings in the Sermon on the Mount and pushes us to ask whether we're really hearing what Christ is saying. The visual component of the book makes it memorable and enjoyable to read, and Skye's incisive reflections make it worthwhile for any Christian. If you've traditionally been dissatisfied with Christian devotional resources but love to learn about Jesus and think deeply, this book was written for you.

Good things come to those who believe . . . right? People like to say, “Prayer works.” But what does that mean? Prayer works for what? Getting the answers from God that we want so much? While God certainly cares for your deepest needs, Skye Jethani wants you to know that prayer is so much more than a two-way transaction with a heavenly vending machine. Jesus didn’t pray like that. And with a pastor’s heart, Skye wants to take you deeper into what Jesus, the lover of your soul, had to say about talking with God. In What If Jesus Was Serious . . . About Prayer?, you’ll benefit not only from Skye’s words of wisdom but his doodles that help the visual learner connect with spiritual truth. Prayer isn’t about getting answers, but getting God. We need more prayer in our lives—not because God can give us what we crave, but because He offers himself to us in love.

Oh No, Not Jesus! is a humorous tale of what happens when Jesus returns to Earth and gets arrested by the United States Department of Homeland Security. As Jesus tells stories during his imprisonment, some of the old gods and heavenly babysitters-Isis, Aries, Buddha, Saint Peter, and the Archangel Gabriel-attempt to find and free him before God realizes he's missing. Unsure of why Jesus has returned five years before the prophesied time, Lucifer also joins in the search. He eventually finds the Son of God in the Pittsburgh area, where Jesus is being held in a top-secret prison that has replaced Guantanamo Bay. But will the Prince of Darkness or any of the other heavenly helpers be able to wrest Jesus away from the government's grasp? For those of you who can stand a little blasphemy, Oh No, Not Jesus! is a humorous tale. And who knows . it might even make you think. "It's great to see him get another go 'round." -Pontius Pilate "I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats ." -Moses "Those homeland security guys give me the willies." -Satan

Millions of American church members cannot name the four gospels. Millions of church members have reinvented Jesus' god as a god of 'fun' and prosperity while proclaiming their belief in Jesus. Little wonder, then, that Jesus' teachings in the gospels are so little practiced by those who claim to follow him. Little wonder that indifference to those teachings is epidemic in today's churches. In this little book of prophecy the author invites us all to rediscover the benefits and the costs of actually relating with the creator god. This book may be injurious to your peace of mind if: ï· There really is a creator god ï· You think he needs your money ï· Jesus really was God's son and messenger ï· Jesus was serious about the lessons he taught ï· You believe church membership guarantees salvation. Remember, saying you 'believe in' Jesus Christ doesn't count for a thing if you ignore or neglect his teachings and examples.

By the Way

What if asking Jesus into our hearts is not the heart of the gospel? What if salvation looks different than we thought? In By the Way, pastor and author Derek Vreeland reframes everything we've been told about Christianity and what it means to follow Jesus. Discipleship isn't an add-on. Jesus didn't say, "Go into all the world and get people saved" or "Get people to ask me into their hearts." Jesus said, "Go therefore and make disciples." Reclaiming discipleship as the heart of the Christian faith means seeing anew the gospel, the cross, the resurrection, transformation, and the community of faith. We learn the ways of Jesus by practicing them, Vreeland says, and in By the Way, he introduces us to the ways of Christ. Discipleship means joining God's joyful mission of reconciliation, not just saving souls. Following Jesus is more like taking a long walk in the woods than sitting in a classroom. Living by the Way takes practice--and that's the point.

Is it possible for a person to know with certainty that they have a future with God in Heaven? Some hold the position that no one can know the answer to that question until they pass on from this life. In a sincere search for an accurate answer, guesswork will not provide the kind of clarity we seek. It has to be one of the most serious questions-if not the most serious question we each need the answer for. Either a person can know that assurance or they cannot. If we can know we have a home in Heaven, then how? If we cannot have that assurance, then why not? Is it too much to hope for that a person could have the promise of eternal peace with God? As Believers, we rejoice that the Lord Jesus promised His followers peace "not as the world gives," and that one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is a continuing ministry of peace while we, His people, are here on earth. Could it not be considered Biblically normal for a Believer to enjoy the comforting assurance of eternal life even as the Lord promised His followers abundant life while on earth? If not, it certainly appears that Believers are missing out on peace, comfort, joy, happiness, security, and a source of fervor for a life of service to the Lord. I believe the Lord wants the best for His people and that the Bible teaches we will "never perish" and "never thirst again." Perhaps the most challenging question a professing Believer-especially a new convert has to deal with-is whether or not a Christian could ever go to hell. It is shocking to find that there is such unsettled belief about such an eternally serious question. I was raised in a church that taught a person who professed Christ could be truly redeemed, saved, born again, and then later in their Christian walk, turn away, be deceived away, rebel, sin away their faith, and end up lost and undone and headed for separation from God. It's as if what they are advocating is "OK, Jesus, your sacrificial blood was sufficient to get me saved, but if I'm going to make it to heaven someday, I have to be faithful, read my Bible every day, pray regularly, witness to others daily, win others to Christ regularly, attend every church service and church-sponsored event coming or going, in effect saying Christ's Work needs supplemented! I now believe that this doctrinal position is blasphemy." When Jesus cried out from His cross, "It is finished!" He wasn't talking about His ordeal of suffering, He was talking about His Sacrificial Work of Redemption, nothing to be taken from It, nothing added to It. He alone accomplished it. (Heb. 1:3) Anything mankind would offer could try to take away from His Glory. The good works that a Believer does (Bible reading, witnessing, praying, etc.) are done because we are saved not in order to be more assured of making it to Heaven someday. Nothing human could ever supplement the atoning Work of the Lord Jesus Christ, a ministry only HE has (Heb. 1:3)

Can the authentic words and deeds of Jesus identified by the Jesus Seminar furnish a sufficient basis for a credible profile of the Jesus of history? That is the challenge faced by the contributors to this volume. Their efforts have resulted in a unique collection of studied impressions of Jesus. Here readers will see not Jesus the icon of myth and creed, but a provocative young man of first-century Palestine whose vision and determination to live the vision gave birth to a new form of faith and changed the course of history.
