Stevenson revisits the conflicted Scotland of James Hogg and Sir Walter Scott as well as that of his own youth, but also responds to recently published novels. A substantial essay explores the complex early publication history of the novel on both sides of the Atlantic, and exceptionally full explanatory notes and other background information are provided.Key FeaturesComposition history drawing on draft manuscript material in various US archivesDetailed account of early publication history in UK and USADetails of early reception in UK and USAFull Explanatory Notes including citations from draft manuscript materialHistorical and Geographical Notes

Although considered by many to be Robert Louis Stevenson's greatest work of literature, Weir of Hermiston was left unfinished by its author's untimely death in 1894. Archie Weir is estranged from his father, a harsh criminal court judge with no time for Archie's Romantic sensibilities. Sent to live as laird of a family property in Hermiston, Archie soon falls in love with a local girl named Kirstie.

The Weir of Hermiston (1896) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. Many have considered it his masterpiece. It was cut short by Stevenson's sudden death in 1894 from a cerebral hemorrhage. The novel tells the story of Archie Weir, a youth born into an upper-class Edinburgh family. Because of his Romantic sensibilities and sensitivity, Archie is estranged from his father, who is depicted as the coarse and cruel judge of a criminal court. By mutual consent, Archie is banished from his family of origin and sent to live as the local laird on a family property in the vicinity of Hermiston (now on Edinburgh's outskirts, and occupied by Heriot-Watt University, but then out in the countryside).

Stevenson said of THE MASTER OF BALLANTRAE 'the public will like it...for it is picturesque and curious and dismal' and indeed it has remained popular with generations of readers.Set in the period following the Jacobite rebellion of 1745,this is the story of two brothers locked in combat, for whom mutual destruction becomes inevitable.Family relationships also dominate WEIR OF HERMISTON,which was Stevenson's last and probably finest novel.Archie is the tyrannised son of Weir, 'the hanging judge',and his eventual estrangement from his father launches him into a world of romantic intrigue and adventure.Stevenson did not finish WEIR OF HERMISTON before his death in 1894,but a summary of his notes and conversations included in this edition points to the intended outcome of this remarkable tale.

With the words last printed "a wilful convulsion of brute nature," the romance of Weir of Hermiston breaks off. They were dictated, I believe, on the very morning of the writer's sudden seizure and death. Weir of Hermiston thus remains in the work of Stevenson what Edwin Drood is in the work of Dickens, or Denis Duval in that of Thackeray, or rather it remains relatively more--for if each of those fragments holds an honourable place among its author's writings, among Stevenson's the fragment of Weir holds certainly the highest.

Mr. Henry James, speaking of the quarrel between Alan Breck and David Balfour in Kidnapped, declares that he knows of "few better examples of the way genius has ever a surprise in its pocket — keeps an ace, as it were, up its sleeve." And in Weir of Hermiston we have a surprise of an even higher order from Stevenson's pocket; that pocket which during his lifetime seemed like the proverbial small boy's—almost inexhaustible, stuffed full of a delightfully heterogeneous mass, sometimes of jingling trinkets, and sometimes of the oddest and rarest treasures. It may seem rash to declare a half-finished and half-revised book the greatest achievement of an author who had so high a passion for finality as Stevenson, but many will unhesitatingly declare Weir of Hermiston Stevenson's best book.
