It's possible that Walking the Dog is completely unlike any other book you have ever read. It's the story of a dog named Stinker, from birth to death to afterlife, as told by Stinker himself. Paradoxes abound: It's easy to read, but it deals with serious topics; it's anxiety-ridden at times, but it offers multiple positive messages. It's a story of choices and consequences, kindness and cruelty, hope and despair, life and death. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry, but most of all, it will make you think about how what you do affects the animals that are in your care (and hopefully help you to become a better pet owner if you feel you need to be). Walking the Dog is a must-read for pet owners and prospective pet owners, along with anyone else who might simply be interested in reading a good story. Tim Taylor was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, in June 1954. He grew up in suburban Indianapolis and has lived in the Indianapolis area his entire life (except for 21/2 years in the mid 1970s when he lived in Houston, Texas, USA). Tim graduated high school in 1972, and went on to attend Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) and the University of Houston. Tim worked in the pharmaceutical industry for nearly 30 years, retiring in July 2008. He and his wife Monica own a somewhat elderly tri-color Shetland sheepdog named Grace and a much younger black-and-tan miniature Dachshund named Maggie. They previously owned two other Shelties and a tabby cat. Tim's son Patrick lives in suburban Indianapolis and owns a tabby cat named Winston. All the Taylor pets are well cared for, healthy, and happy (with the possible exception of Grace, who can sometimes be a little bit grumpy).

Approaching fifty, and warned by his doctor that he's drinking too much and needs to take more exercise, David Hughes is given a dog for his birthday - Dexter, a wire-haired fox terrier. Hughes' daily walks with Dexter form the spine of Walking the Dog. We eavesdrop on their encounters with fellow dog-walkers ('Hello Hector', 'Hello Chester'...) and on Hughes' thoughts as he plods along carrying a plastic bag of poo. He begins to remember moments from his past, dark memories of murder and violence. He explores his own fantasies and obsessions. From the gentle comedy of the early pages, Walking the Dog is transformed into something deeper and more disturbing. This will be a landmark book in the field of graphic literature. The drawing is sublime, the imagination extraordinary, the ambition unequalled.

A “brilliant and layered” novel about a prodigy turned convict turned dog walker in her 40s from the celebrated author of My Depression: A Picture Book (Oprah.com). A former child prodigy and rich-girl, eighteen-year-old Ester is incarcerated after her kleptomania gets way out of hand. There, she is given the very gentile name Carleen (for her own protection) and for two decades, time is the enemy. When finally let loose onto the streets of New York, Carleen finds a job as a dog walker in Manhattan’s most elite neighborhoods. But despite her remarkable gift for canine communication, Carleen is determined to finally prove that she is a real person. To this end, she tries to reconnect with her estranged—and ferociously Orthodox—daughter. Amid the strained brunch dates, unsent letters, and the continuing trauma of prison, Carleen begins a slow and halting process of self-discovery. Strikingly funny and self-aware, this belated coming-of-age novel asks the question: How do you restart after crashing your first chance at life?

Walking the Dog's Shadow rose to the top of nearly eight hundred submissions to win the ninth annual A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize. Tony Hoagland, who served as final judge for the contest, writes, "Deborah Brown's poems remind me a little of the great Polish poet, Wistawa Szymborska. They both make thinking look easy. . . . Brown's poems aren't just about a eureka moment; they taste of the whole journey. Walking the Dog's Shadow is a beautiful book, wise and sure of itself, fresh with wit and gravity, serious and true." Deborah Brown teaches literature and writing at the University of New Hampshire-Manchester.

A rich collection of short stories by one of Ireland's contemporary literary masters. This long-awaited new collection from the noted Irish writer Bernard MacLaverty examines worlds in collision, relationships fragmenting, innocence coming face to face with real life and real death. A Catholic schoolboy playing football has a theological debate with a Protestant policeman; a chess game in Spain is a catalyst for grief and redemption; in the haunting title story a Belfast man out walking his dog is kidnapped at gunpoint. As always, MacLaverty's writing is vivid, exact, and pellucid, his characters perfectly observed, the surface of the prose deceptively still. It is only after we enter the world of the stories that we begin to make out the huge shapes that move there: loss, love, disappointment, fierce joy. This is a powerful, honest, and moving book by one of the great storytellers of our age.

The long-awaited new collection from Bernard MacLaverty examines worlds in collision, relationships fragmenting, innocence face to face with real life, real death. A Catholic schoolboy minding goal has a theological debate with a B-Special; a chess game in Spain is a catalyst for grief and redemption; a Belfast man out walking his dog is kidnapped at gunpoint and told to say his ABC. . . Interwoven through the book are wry, elliptical 'stories within stories' about fiction and the writing of it, featuring 'your man' -a comically beleaguered alter ego. Acting as foils to the brilliance of the real thing, these very short pieces point up the tough lyricism of MacLaverty's work. As always, his writing is vivid, exact and pellucid, his characters perfectly observed, the surface of the prose deceptively still. It is only once we enter the world of the stories that we begin to make out the huge shapes that move there: loss, love, disappointment, fierce joy. WALKING THE DOG has been worth waiting for: it is a powerful, honest and moving book by one of the great storytellers of our age.

This collection of short wordless picture books helps to support children with speech, language and communication needs as they develop their expressive sentence and narrative skills through storytelling. Each book is comprised of six colourful images that follow a simple everyday routine such as ‘Brushing Teeth’, ‘Having a Haircut’ and ‘Walking the Dog’. Unlike traditional picture books, they follow a film scroll effect, showing the progression of time and allowing the child to follow the story to its resolution. Because of their simplicity, the books can support children as they move from simple to intermediate sentence levels, as well as encouraging them to consider additional elements of language such as cause and effect, sequencing and inference. This resource includes: Ten beautifully illustrated picture books, each following a simple pattern of routine, disruption and resolution An accompanying guidebook including story scripts, cue questions and prompts for using the resource to support additional skills Although developed specifically to help children with speech, language and communication needs, this set is suitable for any child who requires support and practice in developing their speech. It is an invaluable resource for speech and language therapists, teaching staff and caregivers.
