‘All men should strive to learn before they die what they are running from, and to, and why’ Rick Stein's childhood in 1950s rural Oxfordshire and North Cornwall was idyllic. His parents were charming and gregarious, their five children much-loved and given freedom typical of the time. As he grew older, the holidays were filled with loud and lively parties in his parents' Cornish barn. But ever-present was the unpredicatible mood of his bipolar father, with Rick frequently the focus of his anger and sadness. When Rick was 18 his father killed himself. Emotionally adrift, Rick left for Australia, carrying a suitcase stamped with his father's initials. Manual labour in the outback followed by adventures in America and Mexico toughened up the naive public schoolboy, but at heart he was still lost and unsure what to do with his life. Eventually, Cornwall called him home. From the entrepreneurial days of his mobile disco, the Purple Tiger, to his first, unlikely unlikely nightclub where much of the time was spent breaking up drink-fuelled fights, Rick charts his personal journey in a way that is both wry and perceptive; engaging and witty. Shortlisted for the Specsavers National Book Awards 2013

Architects Alison and Peter Smithson kept a visual diary of a drive from their London office to their Wiltshire cottage. The contrast of their sleek Citroen DS 19 with the verdant landscape links the urban and the rural in a sensible continuum. It was originally published as A Sensibility Primer in 1983.

Robert Dickerson has crafted poetry for some forty years and by his own admission, is ‘not exactly a beginner.’ His pen has produced several volumes-worth of verse. He celebrates the ‘formal’ and cultivates the ‘science’ of poetry, though he believes the degree of spiritual refi nement in the voice distinguishes the poet. His poems revel in the concrete and he believes in the poem as object. He advocates a natural voice, the primacy of the idea and the translation of the ordinary. His ethic insists that, mathematics aside, all that passes for truth in human affairs is rooted in need and tribal belief. He welcomes the return to poetry of transparency and design and prefers a poetic of mood and word magic to a poetry of politics. In his view, a poem is a ‘joke’ whose punch-line yields enlightenment. He avoids the ‘confessional’ mode as being ‘too full of itself ’. To learn the craft of poetry he recommends practice and constant alertness to poetic possibility. He also recommends reading the greats.

John Dupre, a junior at West Virginia University, is an English major on the Dean's List dressed up as a Beatnik cowboy, the folk-singing resident outsider before nonconformity became a youth uniform. Morgantown is a masterful ensemble piece centering around John and peopled by his unforgettable friends in the out crowd: Bill Cohen, the sharpshooting, knife-throwing Zen Buddhist Harvard scholar; Marge Levine, the political radical with the Nefertiti eyes; and William Revington, the scion of old money who has the world on a platter and can't think of a single thing to do with it. And then theres his girl-friends and sexual obsessions: Carol Rabinowitz, the Wyatt scholar and Jewish American Princess; Natalie, the folk-singing boy-girl with the mind of a scientist; Cassandra Markapolous, whom John loves but is not allowed to be in love with. And, there's the Alice in the photograph, the boy dressed up as a girl dressed up as another girl, on and on endlessly reflecting: a hall of mirrors that threatens to draw John into its vortex.

Originally published in 1975, Peace is a spellbinding, brilliant tour de force of the imagination. The melancholy memoir of Alden Dennis Weer, an embittered old man living out his last days in a small midwestern town, the novel reveals a miraculous dimension as the narrative unfolds. For Weer's imagination has the power to obliterate time and reshape reality, transcending even death itself. Powerfully moving and uncompromisingly honest, Peace ranks alongside the finest literary works of our time. Hailed as "one of the literary giants of SF" by the Denver Post, Gene Wolfe has repeatedly won the field's highest honors, including the Nebula, the Hugo, and the World Fantasy awards. Peace is Gene Wolfe's first full-length novel, a work that shows the genius that later flourished in such acclaimed works as The Fifth Head of Cerberus and The Book of The New Sun. With two of North America's most notorious serial killer / sex slayers as its focus, Lynn Crosbie's novel, Paul's Case, dissects and pathologizes the horrific world of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. In the true-crime tradition of Norman Mailer and a host of others, this book is a remarkable work of theoretical fiction that sensitively, imaginatively, and systematically analyses the abduction and murder of Bernardo and Homolka's innocent victims while exploring, in startlingly graphic detail, the cultural effects of the shocking revelations and controversy surrounding the capture, trial, testimony, videotape evidence, and incarceration of the almost unthinkable monstrous pair. This is compelling, moving, impossible work: a book which will shock, terrify, and anger you: a book which will break your heart and change you. You will never forget Paul's Case.

'A majestic Victorian tale... Wealthy lawyer Esmond, discarded illegitimate son of a peer, has pinched his way to the top of his profession, while his handsome, debt-ridden cavalry officer brother Clinton has inherited the title and the ancestral home. Beautiful actress Theresa, a widow, a fierce free spirit with a sinewy wit, is the woman both will love.' Kirkus Reviews 'It is rare in this field to meet the realities of passion, its shifts and treacheries; when this combines with rich historical details, including recondite legal and financial ones, the result is outstanding.' Observer 'The novel does imperatively make you want to know what happens next. Three cheers for narrative.' New Statesman 'A superb novelistic situation, starkly worked out as it would be in real life... I was intensely concerned for the fortunes of these people.' Elizabeth Jenkins, Kaleidoscope (BBC)
