This new edition of Six Simple Twists: The Pleat Pattern Approach to Origami Tessellation Design introduces an innovative pleat pattern technique for origami designs that is easily accessible to anyone who enjoys the geometry of paper. The book begins with six basic forms meant to ease the reader into the style, and then systematically scaffolds the instructions to build a strong understanding of the techniques, leading to instructions on a limitless number of patterns. It then describes a process of designing additional building blocks. At the end, what emerges is a fascinating artform that will enrich folders for many years. Unlike standard, project-based origami books, Six Simple Twists focuses on how to design, rather than construct. In this thoroughly updated second edition, the book explores new techniques and example tessellations, with full-page images, and mathematical analysis of the patterns. A reader will, through practice, gain the ability to create still more complex and fascinating designs. Key Features Introduces the reader to origami tessellations and demonstrates their place in the origami community New layout and instructional approach restructure the book from the ground up Addresses common tessellation questions, such as what types of paper are best to use, and how this artform rose in popularity Teaches the reader how to grid a sheet of paper and the importance of the pre-creases Gives the reader the ability to create and understand tessellations through scaffolded instruction Includes exercises to test understanding Introduces a new notation system for precisely describing pleat intersections Analyzes pleat intersections mathematically using geometrically-focused models, including information about Brocard points

Imagine mathematics, imagine with the help of mathematics, imagine new worlds, new geometries, new forms. Imagine building mathematical models that make it possible to manage our world better, imagine solving great problems, imagine new problems never before thought of, imagine combining music, art, poetry, literature, architecture, theatre and cinema with mathematics. Imagine the unpredictable and sometimes counterintuitive applications of mathematics in all areas of human endeavour. This seventh volume starts with a homage to the Italian artist Mimmo Paladino who created exclusively for the Venice Conference 2019 ten original and unique works of art paper dedicated to the themes of the meeting. A large section is dedicated to the most recent Fields Medals including a Homage to Maryam Mirzakhani including a presentation of the exhibition on soap bubbles in art and science that took place in 2019. A section is dedicated to cinema and theatre including the performances by Claire Bardainne & Adrien Mondot. A part of the conference focused on the community of mathematicians, their role in literature and even in politics with the extraordinary example of Antanas Mockus Major of Bogotá. Mathematics in the constructions of bridges, in particular in Italy in the Sixties was presented by Tullia Iori. A very particular contribution on Origami by a mathematician, Marco Abate and an artist, Alessandro Beber. And many other topics. As usual the topics are treated in a way that is rigorous but captivating, detailed and full of evocations. This is an all-embracing look at the world of mathematics and culture. This work is addressed to all those who have an interest in Mathematics.

Tomoko Fuse has been one of the world's premier origami artists for more than 35 years. This beautifully photographed book examines the three-dimensional geometric designs she is famous for. Fuse, often referred to as "the queen of origami," discovered the art of folding paper at just seven years old. She has come a long way since then, having had her work highlighted in exhibitions around the world, including Paris Origami (Carrousel du Louvre, 1998), On Paper (Crafts Council London, 2002) and her solo show Yorokobi (Bauhaus Dessau, 2004). In addition to teaching, folding and writing, she also collaborated with designer Denis Guidone for Milan Design Week 2018 and was a featured artist in Nova's episode "The Origami Revolution" (February, 2017). An artistic anthology of her most impressive work, Tomoko Fuse's Origami Art can serve multiple purposes: as inspiration for an experienced origami folder; as a truly impressive coffee table book for the artistically-minded; or as a push for intermediate folders to try their hand at modular origami models.

Origami5 continues in the excellent tradition of its four previous incarnations, documenting work presented at an extraordinary series of meetings that explored the connections between origami, mathematics, science, technology, education, and other academic fields. The fifth such meeting, 5OSME (July 13–17, 2010, Singapore Management University) followed the precedent previous meetings to explore the interdisciplinary connections between origami and the real world. This book begins with a section on origami history, art, and design. It is followed by sections on origami in education and origami science, engineering, and technology, and culminates with a section on origami mathematics—the pairing that inspired the original meeting. Within this one volume, you will find a broad selection of historical information, artists’ descriptions of their processes, various perspectives and approaches to the use of origami in education, mathematical tools for origami design, applications of folding in engineering and technology, as well as original and cutting-edge research on the mathematical underpinnings of origami.

Easily Create Origami with Curved Folds and Surfaces Origami—making shapes only through folding—reveals a fascinating area of geometry woven with a variety of representations. The world of origami has progressed dramatically since the advent of computer programs to perform the necessary computations for origami design. 3D Origami Art presents the design methods underlying 3D creations derived from computation. It includes numerous photos and design drawings called crease patterns, which are available for download on the author’s website. Through the book’s clear figures and descriptions, readers can easily create geometric 3D structures out of a set of lines and curves drawn on a 2D plane. The author uses various shapes of sheets such as rectangles and regular polygons, instead of square paper, to create the origami. Many of the origami creations have a 3D structure composed of curved surfaces, and some of them have complicated forms. However, the background theory underlying all the creations is very simple. The author shows how different origami forms are designed from a common theory.

Tiling theory is an elegant branch of mathematics that has applications in several areas of computer science. The most immediate application area is graphics, where tiling theory has been used in the contexts of texture generation, sampling theory, remeshing, and of course the generation of decorative patterns. The combination of a solid theoretical base (complete with tantalizing open problems), practical algorithmic techniques, and exciting applications make tiling theory a worthwhile area of study for practitioners and students in computer science. This synthesis lecture introduces the mathematical and algorithmic foundations of tiling theory to a computer graphics audience. The goal is primarily to introduce concepts and terminology, clear up common misconceptions, and state and apply important results. The book also describes some of the algorithms and data structures that allow several aspects of tiling theory to be used in practice.
