Travels in Arabia Deserta, originally published in 1888, is a two-volume set which describes English poet Charles Doughty's extensive travels through the Arabian deserts and the discoveries he made there. The work became well-regarded for its beautiful prose as well as its extensiveness, which made it a benchmark of ambitious travel writing in the early 20th century. Written in the style of the King James Bible, the text is extravagant and creative. In the 1920's, it was discovered by British Army Officer T.E. Lawrence, who spurred the book's republication, this time with an introduction from Lawrence. The book has been in and out of print since then, but the Cosimo edition is a rare 1921 reprint, and includes the Lawrence introduction. Volume I includes T.E. Lawrence's Introduction, as well as accounts of Doughty's treks to Mecca, Ammon and Moab, the Mountain of Edom, Arabia, the Passage of the Harra, Teyma, and more. He also describes nomad life in the desert and ancient stories, peoples, and myths connected with his travels. CHARLES MONTAGU DOUGHTY (1843-1926) was an English poet and writer born in Theberton Hall, Saxmundham, Suffolk. He attended King's College London and graduated from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1864. Among this author's works are an epic poem in six volumes titled The Dawn in Britain, published in 1906, and his well-known Travels in Arabia Deserta, for which he received much praise.

John Lewis Burckhardt (1784-1817), the son of a Swiss Colonel undertook the journey to Mekkah in 1814. A master of the Arabic language and the Islamic religion, he assumed the guise of an Arab using the name of Sheikh Ibrahim in his travels, which he began in 1809 under the sponsorship of Sir Joseph Banks and the African Association. Burckhardt's description of the Hedjaz was the first accurate one to reach Europe. According to Leake in his preface ..." Burckhardt transmitted to the Association the most accurate and complete account of the Hedjaz, including the cities of Mekka and Medina, which has ever been received in Europe." His journals are invaluable for their observations on the Arab people and for his important geographical discoveries, including the site of Petra, Apameia, and the general structure of the peninsula of Mount Sinai. His knowledge of the Arabic language, and of Mohammedan manners, had enabled him to assumne the Muselman character with such success, that he resided in Mekka during the whole time of the pilgrimage, and passed through the various ceremonies of the occasion, without the slightest suspicion having arisen as to his real character. The folding plans include Makkah, Madinah, Wady Muna and Arafat.

The Finnish Explorer Yrjo Aukusti Wallin (whose name is perhaps more familiar to us as Georg August or George Augustus) made two historic journeys into the Arabian Peninsula in the 1840s. D.G. Hogarth, paying tribute to Wallin in his "Penetration of Arabia," writes: ""One recognises in him, perhaps for the first time in the history of Arabian discovery, a scientific explorer of the best modern type, thoroughly prepared, and determined to leave nothing for the man who might come after him. His assumption of an eastern character seems to have been perfect; but his observation of the scenery and society about him was in no way inspired by it; and the minute accuracy of his report, as attested by the comparison of the narratives of later travellers, argues that he took most copious notes without let or hindrance, save only in the fanatic company of the Persian pilgrims to the Holy Cities."" Wallin's narratives, "Travels in Arabia" (1845 and 1848), are here reprinted in their entirety by kind permission of the Royal Geographical Society, in whose "Journal" they originally appeared. They are preceeded by important contributions by W.R. Mead of University College, London, on the connections between Wallin and England, where his writings on Arabia found a welcome; and by Mrs M. Trautz, on the background to Wallin's years of exploration. This is the first reprint of Wallin's writings, and constitutes in its way as signal an appreciation of the great Finnish explorer's work as the original publication of his absorbing pioneer journeys more than a century ago. Part of the Oleander Classics series, this title has been reproduced using the highest-quality modern scanning technology in order to keep this and other important works from the Press's 50-year history from going out of print. In this way, the invaluable resources provided by books in the series remain available for general readers, academics and other interested parties.

A unique tour of the largest sand desert in the world. The name Rub 'ul Khali (Empty Quarter) belies the immense diversity and life it harbours, says the author who lived and toured the Arabian deserts for over thirteen years as a journalist. A compulsive traveler since his student days,Ahamed describes in lyrical prose the history, pre-history, archaeology, legends, folklore and travails of the emigre Asian work force that tames the harsh desert. The book is perhaps the first Arabian travelogue by an Indian which takes a comprehensive view of Arabia beyond the Hajj to Mecca, whichis guided anyway. It is probably witnessing the swansong of the fabled Bedouin culture in the wake of the oil tide that is distorting the Arab culture alongside the changing landscape. A valuable guide for the Saudi-bound.

FROM REVIEWS OF THE ORIGINAL EDITION: "Burton's own narratives...are classics of travel. Best known is the account of his journey to Medina and Mecca, closed to non-Muslims.... As Hayman observes, [Burton] reveals his volatile temper as well as his amazing capacity to assimilate information which must have been retained in his head, as no writing was permitted."--"History Today "Burton's lectures...give the full flavor of both his fierce temperament and his fiercer curiosity."--"Los Angeles Times
