Originally published in 1828, François René de Chateaubriand's 2-volume Travels in America and Italy is an important literary travel narrative written by a leading (some would say founding) figure of French Romanticism. Chateaubriand traveled to America in 1791 to escape the volatile atmosphere of Revolutionary France. While some doubt has been raised as to whether he actually traveled to all the areas he claimed, (discrepancies in his descriptions of flora and fauna, lead scholars to believe that Chateaubriand did not travel to the Mississippi River, Florida, Alabama, or to Louisiana, as implied by his writing) Chateaubriand's lush descriptions of nature, particularly that of the sparsely populated landscape of the American South, place this work at the forefront of the French Romantic tradition, strongly impacting leading writers and thinkers of the time. Moral and intellectual concerns are explored throughout the work, for example in the Preface that contains his theories of geographical science and the history of travel. The work is also known for its exploration of the customs, manners, and languages of the Native American tribes Chateaubriand encountered. vol. 2 of 2

Kenneth Scambray discusses the five major categories representative critical, scholarly, and imaginative works written since the 1970s. In the first three sections on history, folklore, and sociology, he locates the Italian experience socially and culturally in North America. Excerpt from Travels in America and Italy, Vol. 2 of 2 Among the Savages all hear arms-men, women, and children; hut the corps of combatants is composed in general of one fifth of the tribe. Fifteen years is the legal age for military service. War is the chief business of the Savages, .and. the sole ground of their policy; it has something more legitimate than war between civilized nations, because it is almost always declared for the very existence of the tribe by which it is undertaken; its object being the preservation of hunting grounds, or lands adapted to culture. Excerpt from Travels in America and Italy, Vol. 1 of 2 I have nothing particular to say respecting the Travels in America here submitted to the reader: the narrative of them is taken, like the subject of The Natchez, from the original manuscript of the latter work. These T ravels carry with them their commentary and their history. My different works contain frequent recollections of my peregrinations in America. I thought at first to collect them and to introduce them under their proper dates into my narrative, but I relinquished this intention to avoid in serting them twice; I have therefore contented myself with referring to these passages. Some, however, I have quoted when they appeared necessary to the due understanding of the text, and were not too long.
