Kneeling at the communion rail, Hannah Shanks heard the familiar words "The body of Christ, broken for you" as the server tore off a piece of bread and placed it in her hands. And then "The blood of Christ, shed for you" as she dipped her bread into the common cup. Just hours before she had found out she was pregnant. Now she heard the words "This is my body" as she'd never heard them before. It occurred to her that Jesus' words spoken at the Last Supper"This is my body, broken; This is my blood poured out"--were as fitting a description of birth as they are of death. Not only do the words describe Jesus' death, but they also apply to every birth that has ever taken place. Making this connection shifted Shanks's thinking about the familiar ritual of communion. This Is My Body is a journey of discovery and reclamation, of finding familiar paths in unfamiliar territory and new facets to ancient rituals. Part personal narrative and part unearthing of scripture passages from a woman's point of view, it draws women and men closer to the God we profess, a God who is in all things, a God who is present in all genders and beyond them. Readers discover that God can be seen through the eyes, bodies, and experiences of women just as God has long been viewed from a male perspective. Using the communion liturgy and elements of the common table (where all are welcome) as a framework, the book offers much material for reflection on this central act of Christianity. This Is My Body is about getting surprised by positivity toward one's body in a time of life when negativity is expected. It is about finding a new relationship to the acts of Christian community through the experience of a woman's body, including pregnancy and birth. The author approaches motherhood with one foot in the sacred and the other in the often difficult space of the stereotypes the church attaches to mothering.

This book examines how the writings of the thirteenth-century nun Gertrude the Great of Helfta articulate an innovative relationship between a person's eucharistic devotion and her body. It attends to her references to the biblical, monastic, and theological traditions, including attitudes and ideas about the spiritual and corporeal senses, in order to illuminate the affirmative role Gertrude assigns to the body in making spiritual progress. Ultimately the book demonstrates that Gertrude leaves behind the dualistic aspect of the Christian intellectual and devotional tradition while exploiting its affirmative concepts of bodily forms of knowing divine union.

This is My Body is a popular apologetic written in terms engaging and accessible to Evangelical Protestants. Shea treats standard misconceptions and objections to the teaching on the real presence of Jesus in the sacrament of the Eucharist, showing most to be simple errors in logic or ironic oversights in scriptural exegesis.

Much has been said and written about trans people by theologians and Church leaders, while little has been heard from trans Christians themselves. As a step towards redressing the balance, This Is My Body offers a grounded reflection on people s experience of gender dissonance that involves negotiating the boundaries between one s identity and religious faith, as well as a review of the most up-to-date theological, cultural and scientific literature. The book has been compiled and edited by Christina Beardsley, a priest and hospital chaplain, writer and activist for trans inclusion in the Church, and Michelle O Brien, who has been involved in advocacy, research, lecturing and writing about intersex and trans issues. It includes contributions from many people associated with the Sibyls, the UK-based confidential spirituality group for transgender people and their allies. "

The body of Christ. The body of the anorexic. The altered body. The mutilated body. The Eucharist. Canonical Western thought has had an uneasy relationship with the flesh from Plato forward. Western philosophy has spent its time dwelling upon ideation, perception, cognition, and recollection, and has pursued, de facto if not de jure, a duality of mind and body that continues to this day. Western theology has followed suit, either viewing the body as humiliation, prison, or site of sin. However, movements in the twentieth century--philosophical, theological, and scientific--have all issued challenges to the longstanding tradition. These challenges invite us to reconsider long-held beliefs about cognition, the body, and human experience in the world. In particular, Wesleyan theology and philosophy are called to address our inheritance and to move beyond it. This Is My Body provides a collection of essays addressing the body from broadly Wesleyan, Christian, and philosophical perspectives, examining Wesley's engagement with the body, embodied epistemologies, the body and the Church, and the altered body in relation to Christian Scripture, reason, tradition, and experience.

An invitation to unlearn the lies about your body that make you feel less-than, and learn to love the home where your life happens. Many of us know all too well the experience of living in bodies we're not entirely at home in, bodies we're told are not good enough, bodies that hold us in chronic stress, pain, or the aftereffects of trauma. Yet the stark truth is that when we hide from our body, we hide from our very life. Underneath the problematic cultural stories about our bodies is the truth of who we are and the source of our connection to others. In This Is My Body, clinical therapist and award-winning researcher Dr. Hillary McBride offers a pathway from disconnection to embodied living by making peace with the living, breathing story of who you are. Packed with illuminating research and stories from her work and deeply personal journey of healing from a life-threatening eating disorder, a car wreck the EMTs thought she wouldn't walk away from, and chronic pain, McBride brings meaningful insights to why the relationship with our bodies matters for the quality of our whole lives. A specialist in embodiment practices, McBride shares the truths and tools to embrace the whole of yourself and, in turn, experience your life to the fullest. This book will show you: How to unlearn the lies about your body that hold you back from the life you were meant to live Practices for reclaiming your body--and your life--from stress, trauma, appearance ideals, and the expectations of others How to access the healing that is written in our very DNA Tools for regulating your emotions through physical awareness For anyone who has ever felt unsafe, unloved, or insufficient in their own skin, McBride offers a better way toward health and true acceptance. This is the invitation to live a better story with your body, to come home to the gift of yourself and the wholeness that has been there all along.

There are serious problems in the Roman Church. The symptoms include a decline in participation in the Mass, a shortage of priests, a loss of authority of the Church. Appropriate changes are necessary in the life of the Church. For these to be successful tradition alone is an insufficient guide. Based on the encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia, this work returns as closely as possible to the understanding of the words of Jesus, "this is my body", when they were first heard. Thus it can is shown that the defining characteristics of the Church are agape, unity and service. This must be the guiding principle of changes to be implemented. Changes are needed in liturgy, sacraments, catechesis, mystagogy, theology, the structure and governance of the Church, its teachings, and evangelisation. In these areas serious effort must be made during the changes to focus on the requirement of making agape, unity and service the active and obvious principle that governs the Church. The road to be taken is not easy, however as the material presented shows, it is urgent. to set out on it.

The Eucharist goes back to the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. It is based on the prayer of thanksgiving that Jesus pronounced over the bread and wine at that meal. "Eucharist" means thanksgiving, praise and blessing. The Church celebrates the Eucharist as a memorial of the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The memorial of the Eucharist is more than a remembrance of the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. In the Eucharist the sacrifice of our redemption becomes present sacramentally. In the past, dogmatic theology has treated the meaning of the Eucharist while disregarding the form of its liturgical celebration, whereas liturgical studies have been content with the latter. Yet the two cannot be separated, however, any more than liturgy and dogma or pastoral practice and doctrine can. For the Church’s liturgy is not about something external to Christian revelation, but rather about "revelation accepted in faith and prayer" (Joseph Ratzinger). In this work Helmut Hoping combines the approaches of dogmatic theology and liturgy while examining the Eucharist from an historical and systematic perspective. The second German edition of this major work, which this new English translation is taken from, was revised and expanded, adding a comparative analysis of the Second Eucharistic Prayer and a chapter on the theology of the words of institution.

This is My Body is a compelling and unforgettably powerful story of trauma, illness, recovery and transformation, told with honesty, courage and resilient good humour. Jennie Hogan, an Anglican priest, has a history of brain injury and illness going back to childhood. In this gripping memoir, memories of the athletic, competitive and fun-loving schoolgirl jostle alongside accounts of invasive emergency medical treatments and the long processes of recovery. She reflects on what it means to live with uncertainty, to become reconciled with a new identity, and how trust and hope can be regained as a vocation flowers despite the odds. Jennie draws on her experience and her beliefs to pose challenging questions about our relationships with our bodies in an age that is obsessed with body image and physical perfection. She explores the nature of faith in times of crisis, the reality of pain and disability, and what it means to be human and vulnerable, yet made in the image of God.
