Following the success of The Jesus Papyrus (a Sunday Times bestseller), in which the authors authenticated three fragments of St Matthew's Gospel kept in an Oxford college from the eyewitness period, Carsten Thiede and Matthew d'Ancona turn their attention to a fragment of inscribed wood, stored in a church in Rome for many hundreds of years, which they believe is part of the title board or Titulus from the cross on which Jesus died. Their claim flies in the face of the view held by many modern historians who dismiss the very notion of any part of the Cross's survival as superstitious and fanciful. However Thiede and d'Ancona have amassed evidence that this fragment is not only genuine, but that it was brought to Rome by Queen Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, who, according to legend, found the cross in Jerusalem in AD326 on the site where the Church of the Holy Sepulcre now stands. Thiede and d'Ancona base their claim on the writing that survives on the Roman Titulus. Deciphering this wording is where Thiede's specialism as a papyrologist comes in. He has also been involved in archaeological investigations at the site of the Church and will be the first to reveal the findi

The horrors of the Crusades have left their mark on Templar William de Mandeville, but in returning home to England he only encounters more woe when he finds his father and older brother have blackened the family name. Determined to set things right, William saves a peasant boy from his sadistic brother's clutches and flees to Portugal. From here he plans to once again fight alongside his Christian brothers in the hopes of retrieving the holy cross of Christ, which the Saracens have stolen. Surely, such an act will restore his good name. But can he overcome his past failings as a warrior and survive long enough to find the sacred relic amid the burning city of Al-Usbuna? "Quest for the True Cross" plunges headlong into the religious and political pandemonium of the twelfth-century, cleverly depicting both sides of the Crusades in a way that doesn't set one above the other.

Beams of wood thought to be the Cross of Christ were venerated in Jerusalem from the time of Constantine the Great and on. Part I of this study investigates the earliest traditions about how those beams came to be there. Several accounts about the so-called Finding of the True Cross from just before and after the year 400 are extant, and these are shown to have drawn on a Jerusalemitic source, probably a story told to pilgrims. The story was stable and may have been told in the same way already in the 330's. that a find was indeed made soon after Constantine's victory over Licinius, probably in the spring of 325. Composed in Jerusalem between 415 and 450 AD it was the deliberate transformation of the original into an argument in favour of Christianity addressed to Jews. A final in the Appendix, the Latin translation of the transformed story is critically edited for the first time, together with two other medieval Latin translations which have never been published before.

During the First Crusade launched in 1095, thousands of Europeans fought to liberate Jerusalem from the Seljuk Turks. By 1099, they had succeeded, and in the decades that followed, Franks settled in the newly conquered territory, creating a rich intellectual and cultural life. They wrote poetry and histories of their experiences, erected churches and castles, and commissioned illuminated manuscripts, frescoes, sculpture, and more. The majority of the crusaders and settlers were French, so the art and culture of France were of abiding importance to them. But the settlers did not merely transfer French artistic forms to the Levant; they also incorporated ideas and images from Byzantine and Islamic neighbors. In France and the Holy Land, Daniel H. Weiss and Lisa Mahoney bring together leading scholars from a variety of disciplines to shed light on the many aspects of this Frankish crusader culture. The authors examine the art, poetry, and architecture of crusader Paris, look at the imprint the Frankish settlers left on the Levant, and explore cultural exchange between the Franks and both Byzantines and Muslims. Although the crusaders' struggle to hold the occupied lands was ultimately futile, their stay in the Levant produced a unique and fascinating intellectual and cultural flowering that was neither Western nor Middle Eastern, but a distinctive melange of both. These thoughtful, provocative essays from prominent medievalists profoundly broaden and deepen our understanding of this significant historical period.
