Magnus Chase has seen his share of trouble. Ever since that terrible night two years ago when his mother told him to run, he has lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, staying one step ahead of the police and truant officers. One day, he's tracked down by an uncle he barely knows-a man his mother claimed was dangerous. Uncle Randolph tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god. The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants, and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years. When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision. Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die . . .

The first book in the incredible new series from the author of Percy Jackson, the Kane Chronicles and Heroes of Olympus. My name is Magnus Chase. I'm orphaned and living rough on the streets of Boston. And things are about to get much worse. My day started out normally enough. I was sleeping under a bridge when some guy kicked me awake and said, 'They're after you.' Next thing I know, I'm reunited with my obnoxious uncle, who casually informs me that my long-lost father is a Norse god. Nothing normal about that. And it turns out the gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Apparently, if I can't find the sword my father lost two thousand years ago, there will be doom. Doomsday, to be precise. A fire giant attacking the city? Immortal warriors hacking each other to pieces? Unkillable wolves with glowing eyes? It's all coming up. But first I'm going to die. This is the story of how my life goes downhill from there...

“Like swordplay itself, By the Sword is elegant, accurate, romantic, and full of brio—the definitive study, hugely readable, of man’s most deadly art.”—Simon Winchester With a new Preface by the author Napoleon fenced. So did Shakespeare, Karl Marx, Grace Kelly, and President Truman, who as a schoolboy would practice fencing with Bess—his future wife— when the two of them returned home from school. Lincoln was a canny dueler. Ignatius Loyola challenged a man to a duel for denying Christ’s divinity (and won). Less successful, but no less enthusiastic, was Mussolini, who would tell his wife he was “off to get spaghetti,” their code to avoid alarming the children. By the Sword is an epic history of sword fighting—a science, an art, and, for many, a religion that began at the dawn of civilization in ancient Egypt and has been an obsession for mankind ever since. With wit and insight, Richard Cohen gives us an engrossing history of the world via the sword. Praise for By the Sword “Touché! While scrupulous and informed about its subject, Richard Cohen’s book is about more than swordplay. It reads at times like an alternative social history of the West.”—Sebastian Faulks “In writing By the Sword, [Cohen] has shown that he is as skilled with the pen as he is with the sword.”—The New York Times “Irresistible . . . extraordinary . . . vivid and hugely enjoyable.”—The Economist “A virtual encyclopedia on the subject of sword fighting.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Literate, learned, and, beg pardon, razor-sharp . . . a pleasure for practitioners, and a rewarding entertainment for the armchair swashbuckler.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

The search for the legendary Sword of Peter... Two thousand years ago, when the Romans came to arrest Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, the disciple Peter cut off the ear of an innocent man. Jesus rebuked Peter and quickly healed the servant's ear - and the Sword of Peter took on supernatural powers. Fast forward to modern day where a Biblical archaeology quest for the Sword of Peter is imperative to both Israel and to the Christian world. It's also a race against others who would possess and use the Sword of Peter for their own purposes, if they find it first. In Summer Lee's second Biblical treasure hunt adventure, Achava, a guardian of sacred artifacts, has her Jewish heritage and her Christian faith. She also has unique DNA from her ancestor, Achsah, who lived during the time of Joshua. Like Samson in the Bible, Achava is capable of exercising supernatural strength, as well as other unusual powers.

Although, I am not a journalist, this is a HUGELY TOPICAL book, and is a, sometimes hilarious, occasionally sad, snapshot of the life of a person who has lived through, just about the most interesting period in modern history. I KNOW, EVERYONE SAYS THAT! I have had to cope in a very harsh environment with the very real problems of suffering from Multiple sclerosis, without letting it spoil a fabulous life full of hard graft and fun. It also covers my feelings about assisted suicide, (euthanasia) I make no apologies or excuses, and am certainly not going to ask anyone to help me to jump under a train. Thats just not fair on others, and it makes a mess. I was born just after World War Two, and after serving my apprenticeship where I was trained as a carpenter and joiner, I launched myself onto the world stage, which was trying to drag itself into the twentieth century? I was diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis over thirty five years ago and have battled through a fun packed and enjoyable life ever since. Now having had to retire after forty three years in an ever changing construction industry, through the problems caused mainly by my illness, and also falling off rooftops, I have just got to put it all into writing. People have asked me why I am writing books, and I must confess that my only reason appears to be that I need to. Whilst fame and fortune sound very nice, I think that I have left all that far too late, and dont want to be famous anyway. I also stopped believing in fairies long ago, but, if I could derive some sort of an income from my efforts, that would be nice. Although Granny used to say, Be careful what you wish for My major feelings are that I need to tell some of my stories. I would also hope for people to see things through the eyes of a person with firsthand experience of some of the issues involved without the whole saga becoming some sort of black comedy, or yet another hand wringing exercise, which will only give the chattering classes more ammo to fill their sorry lives with. I hope my life has been worth more than that. At this time I have also finished writing a book about post war life in Britain, as seen through the eyes of an eight year old boy. In my opinion these stories reflect a very important part of twentieth century social history, and also provide opportunities for a new book on nearly every page. My memories keep me writing, and they are memories which are very real and unfortunately often denied to people whose experiences of life only include the late twentieth and early twenty first century. I know that people say that we have had the best of it, but as a raggy arsed guttersnipe brought up in post war Britain I had a very happy childhood, which has been followed by a very full and happy life. AND FURTHERMORE! IT ISNT OVER YET Regards, Fraser Scott.

Sword Song is the swashbuckling story of Bjarni, a Viking swordsman. Banished from his home, as a boy, for a murder he didn't intend to commit, Bjarni takes up a new life as a mercenary. He journeys to the islands off the west coast of Scotland and there his life is shaped for years to come. A life that will see him fighting among the clan chiefs in feuds as bitter and bloody as can be imagined. This enthralling novel was the last thing Rosemary Sutcliff wrote and was discovered in a drawer after her death. It is published here in paperback for the first time.
