Lucy sat before the old house remembering the Gypsy's words. "It will be a twisting road, filled with much sorrow..." It had been a long road, too. The house raised memories she didn't want. The tour guide was busy telling the crowd the story of the plantation recently acquired by the state. The brutality and terror went back centuries... but was much more recent than she knew. Jason was studying her face, concern in his eyes. Lucy realized she had been away long enough. Memories buried for years had to now be faced for Lucy to step beyond her dark past into a future of hope, a future of love. This story touches all emotions and covers a lifetime.

Children working the cocoa plantations for Americas chocolate. Would you ever dream of such abuse happening to five-year-old boys and girls, children being worked worse than animals on the cocoa plantations to get the cocoa bean, the main ingredient in chocolate, to America. The cocoa beans are covered with the blood, sweat, and tears of five-year-old children sold for slave labor to work on the cocoa plantations. Everyone has limited freedoms, even in America. We protect our children. They dont have to work on cocoa plantations like five-year-old children in Africa. What should we do about the children who are being abused? Laws are in place. The International Labor Organization, Convention laws, and the Convention of the Rights of the Child, these laws are not being enforced. American people want chocolate but are not aware of the abuse taking place on the Ivory Coast of Africa and Ghana, where 60 percent of the cocoa beans in the world are produced on the cocoa plantations. The cocoa plantations on the Ivory Coast of Africa and Ghana are noted as being the worst form of child slavery in the history of the world. Five-year-old children are working one hundred hours a week. Children are sold into slavery and will never have a childhood or education. Children working to get cocoa beans to America so the chocolate industries can produce chocolate while ignoring the laws in place. Five-year-old children are being raped, sodomized, beaten with bike chains, and possibly murdered trying to escape the cocoa plantations? Chocolate is a trillion-dollar industry. Did medieval women have the power to choose? This is a question at the heart of this book which explores three court cases from Yorkshire in the decades after the Black Death. Alice de Rouclif was a child heiress made to marry the illegitimate son of the local abbot and then abducted by her feudal superior. Agnes Grantham was a successful businesswoman ambushed and assaulted in a forest whilst on her way to dine with the Master of St Leonard's Hospital. Alice Brathwell was a respectable widow who attracted the attentions of a supposedly aristocratic conman. These are their stories.

Animals and Women is a collection of pioneering essays that explores the theoretical connections between feminism and animal defense. Offering a feminist perspective on the status of animals, this unique volume argues persuasively that both the social construction and oppressions of women are inextricably connected to the ways in which we comprehend and abuse other species. Furthermore, it demonstrates that such a focus does not distract from the struggle for women’s rights, but rather contributes to it. This wide-ranging multidisciplinary anthology presents original material from scholars in a variety of fields, as well as a rare, early article by Virginia Woolf. Exploring the leading edge of the species/gender boundary, it addresses such issues as the relationship between abortion rights and animal rights, the connection between woman-battering and animal abuse, and the speciesist basis for much sexist language. Also considered are the ways in which animals have been regarded by science, literature, and the environmentalist movement. A striking meditation on women and wolves is presented, as is an examination of sexual harassment and the taxonomy of hunters and hunting. Finally, this compelling collection suggests that the subordination and degradation of women is a prototype for other forms of abuse, and that to deny this connection is to participate in the continued mistreatment of animals and women.
