THE NEW WORLD OF EATING was voted "1995 Best Book of the Year in Category of Cooking" North American Book Dealers Exchange. THE NEW WORLD OF EATING is a modern cookbook with an emphasis on how to eat & cook to maintain superior health & ideal body weight. It is one of the first books with several detoxifying diets outlined in a "target diet." The book includes over 450 low-fat, not-fat, & raw recipes. The focal point of the book is the "target diet." There are six circles of the "target diet" & in the recipe section if a recipe falls into one of the circles the number is given after the recipe. THE NEW WORLD OF EATING suggests that one does not always eat the same way every day. One of the detoxifying diets may be a choice once a week. During a time of acute or chronic illness, an individual may follow a detoxifying diet for a period of time recommended by a primary care physician. THE NEW WORLD OF EATING is divided into 2 sections. Most of the first section explains the scientific rationale for low-fat, high-fiber, & detoxifying diets. Other topics that are included in the first section are goal setting & assessing eating behavior, food labeling, food safety, & how to raise healthy children. The author discusses how she raised her children according to the "target diet." Consequently, her children have never had over-the-counter or prescribed medicine. In addition, there are helpful hints throughout the book on cooking, storing & shopping. The second section of the book is the recipe section. It begins with some helpful hints for modifying recipes to decrease or omit fat & increase dietary fiber. The emphasis in the recipe section is how to creatively prepare quick, low-fat, high flavor, high fiber meals. Cooking with quality ancient grains such as quinoa, amaranth, millet, kamut & spelt is stressed throughout the recipe section. Thousands of people will be able to benefit from the medical advice found in Dr. McDougall's Digestive Tune-Up. This life-changing information shows how to heal intestinal illnesses through a noninvasive approach of diet and lifestyle changes. According to Dr. McDougall, constipation, hemorrhoids, ulcers, IBS, and colitis are a few of the chronic digestive disorders that can be prevented and cured by eating a low-fat, cholesterol-free, plant-based diet. The reasons for this become apparent through a series of "office visits" by two fictitious, middle-aged patients who seek medical intervention in order to regain their health. Through these "visits" readers learn: • how their digestive system works • to identify the root causes of intestinal discomfort • why "friendly" bacteria are necessary for overall health • how to take control of the healing process • how to avoid surgical procedures & expensive medications This book covers topics that are often taboo in common conversation with a candid, often humorous look. Easy to understand, the information covered will enable everyone to make more informed medical decisions and wiser dietary choices.

Is God a Vegetarian

Is God a Vegetarian? is one of the most complete explorations of vegetarianism in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Young, a linguistics and New Testament scholar, attempts to answer the question being asked with greater and greater frequency: "Are Christians morally obligated to be vegetarians?" Many people are confused about the apparent mixed messages within the Bible. On the one hand, God prescribes a vegetarian diet in the Garden of Eden and the apocalyptic visions of Isaiah and John imply the restoration of a vegetarian diet. However, it is also clear that God permits, Jesus partakes in, and Paul sanctions the eating of flesh. Does the Bible give any clear guidance? Close readings of key biblical texts pertaining to dietary customs, vegetarianism, and animal rights make up the substance of the book. Rather than ignoring or offering a literal, twentieth-century interpretation of the passages, the author analyzes the voices of these conflicting dietary motifs within their own social contexts. Interwoven throughout these readings are discussions of contemporary issues, such as animal testing and experimentation, the fur industry, raising animals in factories, and the effects of meat-eating on human health. Thirteen chapters cover such topics as -- the vegetarian diet in the Garden of Eden -- the clothing of the first humans in animal skins -- God's permitting humans to eat meat -- animal sacrifice -- the dietary habits of Jesus and the early apostles -- Paul's condemnation of vegetarianism as heresy -- the dietary views of the early church fathers -- the peaceable kingdom. The author provides two vegetarian recipes at the end of each chapter. An epilogue includes guidelines for becoming a vegetarian and a recommended reading list. Insightful and challenging, Is God a Vegetarian? poses provocative questions for vegetarians, Christians, and anyone reflecting upon her personal choices and ethical role in our world today.

In 1996, when Howard Lyman warned America on The Oprah Winfrey Show that Mad Cow Disease was coming to America, offended cattlemen sued him and Oprah both. Not only were Lyman and Oprah vindicated in court, but events have proved many of Lyman's predictions absolutely right. Mad Cow Disease has come to America, and Lyman argues persuasively in No More Bull! that the problem will only grow more deadly until our government deals with it seriously. In Mad Cowboy, Lyman, a fourth-generation Montana rancher turned vegetarian then vegan, told the story of his personal transformation after a spinal tumor, which he believes was caused by agricultural chemicals, nearly left him paralyzed. In No More Bull!, Lyman uses his humor, compassion, firsthand experience in agriculture, and command of the facts of health to argue that we might all profit by transforming our diets. He makes a powerful case that Alzheimer's is yet another disease linked to eating meat. And he explains that the steak at the heart of your dinner plate not only may destroy your own heart but actually offers no more nutritional value than a doughnut! If you've been confused by the competing claims of the Atkins Diet, the South Beach Diet, and other fad diets, No More Bull! is the book that will set you straight. Its pure, unvarnished truth is told with down-home common sense. Lyman's got a message for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans -- and the message of No More Bull! is that we can all do better for ourselves and the planet.
