A history of secrets and lies . . . DS Wesley Peterson, newly arrived in the West Country town of Tradmouth, has his hands full when a child goes missing and a young woman is brutally murdered on a lonely cliff path. Then his old friend, archaeologist Neil Watson, unearths the skeletons of a woman and a newborn baby in the cellar of an ancient merchant's house nearby. As they begin to investigate the murders, Wesley starts to suspect that these deaths, centuries apart, may be linked by age-old motives of jealousy and sexual obsession. And the pressure is on if he is going to prevent a further tragedy . . . The first mystery in the bestselling Wesley Peterson series from Kate Ellis, the award-winning author of the 2019 CWA Dagger in the Library. What readers are saying about The Merchant's House . . . Excerpt from View of the Merchants House for Glasgow: Containing Historical Notices of Its Origin, Constitution, and Property, and of the Charitable Foundations Which It Administers Shortly after his installation as Lord Dean of Guild, Mr Archibald Orr Ewing of Ballikinrain brought under the notice of the Directors of the Merchants House of Glasgow the very general wish which prevailed among the Members to obtain copies of the Constitution and Regulations of the House, and that as the Sketch written by the late Mr. James Ewing of Strathleven, and published in 1817, was almost out of print, it was desirable that it should be reprinted, with such additions as would bring down the History to the present time. The Directors, cordially approving of this suggestion, remitted to Messrs. Archibald Orr Ewing, James Lumsden, Alexander Ronaldson, James Alexander Campbell, and Michael Connal, as a Committee, to carry the same into effect. The Committee finding, through the researches which they instituted, that much interesting matter, not embraced in Mr. James Ewing's Sketch, existed among the Archives of the House, resolved that, instead of a reprint, it was preferable that a larger and more comprehensive Volume should be published; and, accordingly, they have endeavoured, by embodying not only the substance of that Sketch, but also the further materials now rendered available, to give effect to the Lord Dean of Guild's suggestion, in the preparation of the present Work. The publication of this Volume appears the more necessary when regard is had to the extensive changes and Burgh Reforms effected during the reigns of King William IV. and of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, as well as to the great increase in the Population and Trade of Glasgow, and to the important Trusts which are now reposed in a Corporation holding the high position occupied by the Merchants House among the Municipal Institutions of the City. Diaspora Merchants in the Black Sea

Presented here for the first time in English, this richly detailed study--based on British, French, Greek, and Russian archival sources--tells the story of the powerful Greek trading houses that competed successfully with North America to feed the industrializing population of Western Europe. Vassilis Kardasis presents this commercial history by charting the rise of Greek merchant houses to a position of dominance over the export of trade in Russian grain. Though the Greeks would eventually cede their dominance to the competition of cheaper American grain in the second half of the nineteenth century, their influence was felt in the transformation of Southern Russia to productive agricultural land and the formation of large Black Sea port cities which would eventually encourage massive immigration. Diaspora Merchants in the Black Sea fills an important gap in our understanding of the role of the diasporic Greek community in southern Russian history, the history of Greek maritime activity, and ultimately the history of economic relations between Eastern and Western Europe.

During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, servants in the East India Company established a private English trading network that was successful and highly competitive. How was this development maintained seeing that the group of private merchants was constantly changing? The answer must be found in the close ties connecting Madras with the City of London. London was the financial centre of the British Empire as well as the generator of overseas expansion. Colonial societies in the West Indies and North America were economically and socially dependent upon the metropolis and so was Madras. This book places the activities of the private merchants in Madras within the framework of the first British Empire. It focuses on a hitherto neglected field of study, uncovering a private trading network, a diaspora, built on gentlemanly capitalism, trust and ethnicity.
