It is commonly assumed that the rise of modern democracies put an end to the spectacular and ceremonial aspects of political rule that were so characteristic of monarchies and other earlier regimes. The medieval idea that the king had two bodies - a mortal physical body and an eternal political body - strikes us today as alien and remote from our understanding of politics: with the transition from monarchy to modern representative democracy, the idea of the body politic was abandoned. Or was it? In this remarkable and highly original book Philip Manow shows that the body politic, though so often pronounced dead, remains alive in modern democracies. It is just one of the many ideas that we have inherited from our predecessors and that continue to shape our modern forms of political life. Why did the semi-circle become the main seating plan for modern parliaments? Why do we think that parliament should mirror the diversity of society? Why does the president's motorcade always have more than one identical-looking Cadillac? Why do we pay so much attention to the physical features and appearance - the body - of our political leaders today? In answering these and other questions Manow sheds fresh light on the pre-modern origins of our modern political institutions and practices and shows convincingly that all political power - including democracy - requires and produces its own political mythology.

It is 1483 and King Edward IV wears England’s crown, but no king rules unchallenged. Often it is those closest to him who are the unexpected danger. When the king dies suddenly without clear cause, then rumour replaces fact – and Andrew Cobham is already working behind the scenes. Tyballis, when orphaned young, was forced into marriage with her neighbour, a bully and a simpleton. When she escapes his abuse, she meets Andrew Cobham, and gradually an uneasy alliance forms. Their friendship will take them in unusual directions as Tyballis becomes embroiled in Andrew’s work and the danger which surrounds him. Eventually it is a motley gathering of thieves, informers, prostitutes and children that joins the game, determined to help Andrew uncover treason. And as the country is brought to the brink of war, Andrew and Tyballis discover something neither thought was possible. The second woman, Zara, is a lowly handmaid who serves Salome, but where Salome spies conspiracies and treachery, Zara sees hurting people in need of understanding and compassion. Powerful and powerless, Idumean and Jew, selfish and selfless--both women struggle to reach their goals and survive in Herod the Great's tumultuous court, where no one is trustworthy and no one is safe"--

Bayard Rustin was a part of one of the most historic events in American History, the Civil Rights Movement. He is one of the unknown hero's of the movement being one of Martin Luther King Jr.'s right hand men. Standing in the presence of Kings he was truly one of them. Responsible for assisting Dr. King in writing his speeches and being one of his closest friends and supporters Rustin was a true man of honor. In the midst of the Movement Rustin also had another movement spilling into his world, he was gay. Eventually he was fired from his post and in this performance he tells the story of what it felt like to fight for the freedom of part of who he was and not the other part. Was the timing not right, or was the Civil Rights Movement the first priority for America to deal with and the other freedoms would soon follow? It is a challenging story that shows the challenge of having to choose which part of yourself is most important and accepting that the things that we want or even need may take time to come to fruition. Alistair Greenwood, Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge, hosts a luncheon at his faultless 17th Century home. Its perfection is marred by the incompatability of the guests and the arrogance of the host. Gillian Adams, an American scholar revisiting the unversity while on sabbatical from Vancouver, finds it distasteful, but she's truly appalled when the eminent Greenwood is gunned down the next day while listening to her lecture. Involved as a witness, she's also hooked into the case by her friendship with Edward Gisborne of the Yard, who had come to hear her and remains to capture Greenwood's killer.... This debut novel, first published in 1983, is polished in its plotting and its prose and beautifully depicts Cambridge, doing for that ""ancient seat of learning what Dorothy L. Sayers did long ago for Oxford in Gaudy Night.""
