Creative writing is a relatively new phenomenon in African universities, as the influence of the American higher education system gains ground on the continent. Whilst there are many creative writing course books that focus on American/European audiences, there are almost no books with an African literary emphasis in mind, placing African literature and writing into a wider literary context and tradition, and targeting African writers, students and teachers of creative writing. Intending to fill this gap, this book is meant for teachers and students of creative writing, poetry and African literature on the African continent and beyond, especially young African writers.

When it comes to writing, The Practice of Creative Writing has a simple message: you can do this, and it's worthwhile to try. Designed for all students in the introductory course, The Practice of Creative Writing teaches students how to harness their imaginations to focus and create stories. Heather Sellers, who writes in multiple genres herself, has developed an approach that focuses on the elements and strategies that produce good writing in any genre: Images; Energy; Tension; Pattern; Insight; and Revision. She provides opportunities to be playful and to experiment at the same time that she teaches students the importance of discipline and craft. ? In addition to writing strategies and process, The Practice of Creative Writing teaches students how to read like writers, featuring ample and diverse readings in every genre. As a result, students come away with more sophisticated reading skills and exposure to a wide range of innovative and new literature. This new edition features a wealth of new readings, as well as coverage of revisions, short forms, and new genres, such as lists and monologues.

By Sue Thomas www.suethomas.net In the early 1990s there were very few creative writing degrees in the UK but lots of creative writing workshops in the community. Many writers, including me, taught creative writing in libraries, prisons, hospitals, schools, even living rooms. The students were hugely varied, from enthusiastic poets to prospective autobiographers and hopeful screenwriters and everything in between. I’m no longer involved in that way but such groups are still very popular, and they often provide a valuable income for self-employed writers. The idea for ‘Creative Writing: A Handbook for Workshop Leaders’ came from a collaboration between East Midlands Arts and the University of Nottingham’s Department of Adult Education, both now defunct. Its aim was to support creative writing teachers by collecting the wisdom of those East Midlands writers who were already involved in the practice. Many writers who teach writing have no formal training in teaching or facilitation and can find very few resources to help them when they’re starting out, or support them as they develop their skills. The book is divided into the following sections: Teaching Adults Teaching Writing Workshop Exercises Problems and Issues Resources and Information Of course some of the material is now wildly out of date and there are virtually no web-based resources but a lot of it will still be useful. I especially like the inspiring vignettes by writers Catherine Byron, Kevin Fegan, Martin Glynn, Jacek Laskowski and Kathy Page.
