Biblical tradition asserts that the revelation of God to Moses in the burning bush involved also a declaration of the divine name, the Tet (represented by the letters Y, H, W, H), and its meaning. There are indications that the divine name was known prior to the time of Moses, although ultimate questions of origin and precise meaning are shrouded in obscurity. IN fact, even the exact pronunciation of the name (usually pronounced YAHWEH) is by no means certain. The author of The Divine Name in the Bible surveys the immense literature on this subject, and traces the use of various names for deity in Israel from patriarchal times onwards, with special attention to the significance of the Tetragrammaton, which in course of time, became the name by which the God of Israel was known. Various aspects of the theological meaning of the name in the Old Testament writings are explored. The Dead Sea Scrolls, the Jewish Talmudic literature, and later mystical writings are also examined. The translators of the Old Testament into Greek used Kyrios as the equivalent for YHWH—with implications for the New Testament understanding of the person of Jesus Christ, reflected also in subsequent Christological formulations.

The Yahwist s Landscape

The present ecological crisis has created new interest in and criticism of biblical attitudes toward nature. In this book Theodore Hiebert offers a comprehensive examination of the ideology of a single biblical author--the Yahwist (J), writer of the oldest narrative sections of Genesis, Exodus, and Numbers. Hiebert argues the importance of reading J in its ancient Near Eastern context. His analysis incorporates evidence concerning the ecologies, economies, and religions of the ancient Levant drawn from recent work in archaeology, history, social anthropology, and comparative religion. Hiebert finds that despite the limitations of J's world view (and the world in which it took shape), J's ideology is relevant to contemporary efforts to frame a theology of ecology. Particularly valuable are J's views of reality as unified and non-dualistic, humanity as limited and dependent, nature and humanity as interrelated and holding sacred significance, and agriculture as a context for an ecological theology.

Studies in Ancient Yahwistic Poetry

"Ancient Yahwistic poetry is a particularly tempting field of study. In this small body of literature are preserved the oldest and most creative expressions of Israel's faith. This study of ancient Yahwistic poetry by Frank Moore Cross Jr. and David Noel Freedman untangles some of the serious textual difficulties and linguistic obscurities that have been a challenge to students of the Hebrew Bible for many generations." "The results of a joint doctoral dissertation originally submitted in 1950 and published in 1975, this volume has withstood the test of time; it offers analysis and conclusions regarding the Old Testament's Yahwistic poetry that remains as innovative and authoritative today as they were almost fifty years ago. Following an important introduction to the study of Yahwistic poetry, the book focuses in detail on "The Song of Miriam" (Exodus 15), "The Blessing of Jacob" (Genesis 49), "The Blessing of Moses" (Deuteronomy 33), and "A Royal Song of Thanksgiving" (2 Samuel 22 = Psalm 18). This edition also includes new prefaces by Cross and Freedman that give their present perspectives on this classic work in biblical studies."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Yahweh and the Sun

This challenging provocative book argues that there was in ancient Israel a considerable degree of overlap between the worship of the sun and of Yahweh-even that Yahweh was worshipped as the sun in some contexts. As an object created not by humankind but by God himself, the sun as an object of veneration lay outside the bounds of the second commandment and was considered by many to be an appropriate 'icon' of Yahweh of Hosts. Through its ivestigation of 'solar Yahwism', this book offers fresh insight into several passages (e.g.Genesis 1;32.23-33; Joshua 10.12-14; 1 Kings 8.12; Ezekiel 8.16-18; Psalms 19;104) and archaeological data regarding the orientations of Yawistic temples, the "lmlk" jar handles ,horse figurines, and the Taanach cult stand. The book argues that the struggle between Yahweh and other deities in ancint Israel took place within the context of the development of Yahwism itself.

The Bible According to Jim

In 1976, Rev. Dr. Stewart read the whole Bible for the first time and became fascinated with God’s relationship with creation. After an early life in construction, Dr. Stewart felt God’s calling and returned to university. At university, he majored in ancient history and studied the Hebrew language. His exegetical work is taken directly from biblical Hebrew and Greek. This ability has helped him understand how ancient male bias has been promoted by the church in all ages. As a student of the Bible, he has come to see how the women’s voice has often been suppressed. He has also come to appreciate that when it is not suppressed, a certain beauty shines forth. Knowledge of scripture, from the Hebrew perspective, allowed him to discover how the male voice can make a positive statement at the beginning of a story and then go on to contradict the statement by describing the negative actions that followed. Dr. Stewart lives in Milverton, Ontario, with his wife, Marjorie, of forty-five years; they enjoy visiting their two children and five grandchildren. Retirement has given him the opportunity to research, write, and play golf. —Ordained as an Elder in Chedoke Presbyterian Church in 1981 —Attended McMaster University, Hamilton, in1996 —Diploma in Theology, Knox College, Toronto —Master of Divinity degree, University of Toronto —Doctor of Ministry, Ashland Theological Seminary, Ashland, Ohio —Certificate course in conflict management, Conrad Grebel, Waterloo —Ordained to Ministry of Word and Sacraments in 2001 —Pastor of churches in Bathurst, New Brunswick, and Milverton, Ontario —Retired in 2012 —Past Master of Corinthian Lodge #513, Hamilton, Ontario —Past Most Wise Sovereign of Hamilton Chapter of Rose Croix —Honorary Member of Supreme Council AASR 33 —Jim was a master scuba instructor. —He loves diving and fi shing in the Caribbean.
