Digital measurement of the analog acoustical parameters of a music performance hall is difficult. The aim of such work is to create a digital acoustical derivation that is an accurate numerical representation of the complex analog characteristics of the hall. The present study describes the exponential sine sweep (ESS) measurement process in the derivation of an acoustical impulse response function (AIRF) of three music performance halls in Canada. It examines specific difficulties of the process, such as preventing the external effects of the measurement transducers from corrupting the derivation, and provides solutions, such as the use of filtering techniques in order to remove such unwanted effects. In addition, the book presents a novel method of numerical verification through mean-squared error (MSE) analysis in order to determine how accurately the derived AIRF represents the acoustical behavior of the actual hall.

Leo Beranek, an Iowa farm boy who became a Renaissance man—scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, musician, television executive, philanthropist, and author—has lived life in constant motion. His seventy-year career, through the most tumultuous and transformative years of the last century, has always been propelled by the sheer exhilaration of trying something new. In Riding The Waves, Leo Beranek tells his story. Beranek's life changed direction on a summer day in 1935 when he stopped to help a motorist with a flat tire. The driver just happened to be a former Harvard professor of engineering, who guided the young Beranek toward a full scholarship at Harvard's graduate school of engineering. Beranek went on to be one of the world's leading experts on acoustics. He became Director of Harvard's Electro-Acoustic Laboratory, where he invented the Hush-A-Phone—a telephone accessory that began the chain of regulatory challenges and lawsuits that led ultimately to the breakup of the Bell Telephone monopoly in the 1980s. Beranek moved to MIT to be a professor and Technical Director of its Acoustics Laboratory, then left academia to found the acoustical consulting firm Bolt, Beranek and Newman. Known for his work in noise control and concert acoustics, Beranek devised the world's largest muffler to quiet jet noise and served as acoustical consultant for concert halls around the world (including the Tanglewood Music Shed, the storied summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra). As president of BBN, he assembled the software group that invented both the ARPANET, the forerunner of the Internet, and e-mail. In the 1970s, Beranek risked his life savings to secure the license to operate a television station; he turned Channel 5 in Boston into one of the country's best, then sold it to Metromedia in 1982 for the highest price ever paid up to that time for a broadcast station. “One central lesson I've learned is the value of risk-taking and of moving on when risks turn into busts or odds look better elsewhere,” Beranek writes. Riding The Waves is a testament to the boldness, diligence, and intelligence behind Beranek's lifetime of extraordinary achievement. Leo Beranek is a pioneer in acoustical research, known for his work in noise control and the acoustics of concert halls, and the author of twelve books on these topics. The many awards he has received include the Presidential National Medal of Science, presented in 2003.

This book addresses the question of how musicians are influenced by their room acoustical environment when playing on a concert hall stage. Even though the concept of adapting a music performance to room acoustics is often taken for granted by musicians, it is unclear if and how such adjustments take place in practice and which aspects of room acoustics play a role in this context. Empirical investigations in both real-world and simulated concert halls are presented in the book to shed light on the question. A case study with a cellist performing in European concert halls as well as a laboratory study with musicians playing in virtual room acoustical environments simulated by means of dynamic binaural synthesis were conducted. Both investigations make use of room acoustical computer models to determine the room acoustical conditions typically encountered by musicians on stage. Software-based performance analysis is employed to quantify musically and perceptually relevant aspects of performance. The influence of diverse room acoustical parameters on numerous performance characteristics is investigated with the statistical methods of multilevel regression models.

Acoustics is one of the youngest classical sciences, with the theoretical foundations being formulated by Lord Rayleigh in 1877. In the period between 1898 and 1905, Wallace Clement Sabine advanced the application of acoustics to architecture. But it was the development of the vacuum-tube amplifier, loudspeakers, and noise-free microphones in the second quarter of the 20th century that allowed the amassing of enough accurate data to make acoustics an effective engineering science. Before electronic equipment was invented, acousticians lacked both the means to produce specific types of sounds and to then measure the strength of them. Before these tools existed, designers of music halls could learn about acoustics only by observing other halls, speculating about which factors were responsible for glorious sonorities in one place and muddled cacophony in another. The information herein applies to any concert hall or opera house, the result of hundreds of interviews with opera and symphony orchestra conductors, performers, and music critics; of listening to music in some sixty different halls; of collecting precise acoustical measurements, accurate architectural drawings, and photographs of said halls. The story of the acoustics of many of the world's greatest halls is told as simply as possible, while maintaining technical accuracy.
