As two of the most popular entertainers of the mid-century film industry, comic greats Bud Abbott and Lou Costello offered an essential balm to the American public following the sorrows of the Great Depression and during the trauma of World War II. This is the first book to focus in detail on the immensely popular wartime films of Abbott and Costello, discussing the production, content, and reception of 18 films within the context of wartime events on the home front and abroad. The films covered include the service comedies Buck Privates, In the Navy, and Keep 'Em Flying; more mainstream comic relief films such as Pardon My Sarong and Who Done It?; and post-war experiments such as Little Giant and The Time of Their Lives. More than 120 stills and lobby cards from the author's personal collection illustrate the text, including many showing outtakes or deleted scenes.

This introduction to media history captures the excitement and personality of ideas, events, and people who made it happen. With a chronology that emphasizes a narrative style, anecdotes, and a selection of ideas, the chapters of this book are devoted to certain movements in American history and the role of media in them. Events and personalities are interpreted in the context in which they existed. Therefore, both the negative and positive aspects of issues, events, and people who influenced media history are presented. Selection of subjects is made on the basis of what is significant, interesting, and worth remembering. Students will find, for example, the “Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus” column as well as William Allen White's tribute to his daughter at her death. Basic themes that run through the course of media history are identified by subheads in each chapter, and questions for discussion and research are at the end of each chapter.

These thorough bibliographic entries serve as a guide for those who wish to do further research into the first 35 years of talking pictures. A brief history of this era of films, the studio system, and the society of which they were a by-product adds context to the entries and accents their significance. The author has chosen 1965 as the cutoff date because it marked the end of the studio system and the beginning of the independent filmmaking era. This guide highlights the people and the art of the glamorous days of filmmaking in which actors and actresses set the standards by which all actors have been measured since. The abundance of data collected in this guide reflects the exhaustive wealth of films and personalities associated with the golden age of moviemaking. Based on certain criteria such as the amount and availability of bibliographical material, notoriety, critical acclaim, and the number and quality of awards, the author has carefully selected the works and people included in this reference. Current and comprehensive, this reference tool includes bibliographical information that provides both positive and negative criticism and appendices, including an extensive general bibliography, lists of film festivals around the world, schools offering advanced degrees in film, and film museums and archives in the United States.

From 1947 through 1963, the merged studios of Universal and International produced mostly highly entertaining westerns that ranged from classics like Winchester '73 to forgettable films better left unmade. Entries on the 114 Universal-International westerns of the period are collected here. While other films may have contained western elements, only films that truly fit the genre are included. Films are arranged alphabetically by title, and each entry includes release date, alternate title, cast, credits, songs, location of filming, source if the film was an adaptation, running time, plot synopsis, commentary from the author and from the actors and directors, and representative excerpts from contemporary reviews. Also included are tag lines used in the original advertising for each film. An introduction to the book provides details on the Universal-International merger and a history of the studios' productions.
