Iván Nyusztay's Myth, Telos, Identity: The Tragic Schema in Greek and Shakespearean Dramafor the first time presents a systematic comparison of Greek and Shakespearean tragedy. By thematizing the common modes of the tragic, it measures their structural regularities against corresponding philosophical and ethical reflections. The comparative theory of tragedy evolves through a constant debate with the traditional views of Aristotle, Hegel, Schelling, Paul Ricoeur, and others. An architectonic survey of plays leads to a generic distinction between pure tragedy and melodrama, and proposes a possible description of Christian tragedy. This generic differentiation is considered by means of a teleological approach to tragedy as well as from a formal perspective. The criticism of traditional notions of character stresses the relevance of dividedness and internal collision – tragic phenomena which are explored as necessary stages of self in the constitution and formation of tragic or internal alterity. This form of alterity is underpinned by a discussion of action theory and speech act theory. This book will be of interest for readers of Greek and Shakespearean drama, as well as for students of comparative literature and genre theory, classicists and philosophers, and for everyone interested in the relation between literature and philosophy.

Monasticism in the Mediterranean: Now and Tomorrow In this edition of Telos, the contributors were asked to offer readers their views and their personal stories in monasticism in its present form in in the Mediterranean. The continuing existence of monasticism in the twenty-first century may seem anachronistic to some and a quaint continuity to others. As the contributors to this edition of Telos demonstrate, the monastic call answers a deeper spiritual manifestation in the individual, transcending history. From the Mediterranean origins of this form of monasticism to today's Mediterranean reality, the monk is a comforting reference point, living a labour of love to God's eternal promise With articles by Aldo CAVALLI, Grigorios D. PAPATHOMAS, Salvino BUSUTTIL, Edward G. FARRUGIA, Henri TEISSIER, Robert FOUQUEZ, Frere MARIE PAQUES."

Listen to childrens imaginations, as they always tell the truth. When do children start to use their imaginations to create desired outcomes? Are they pretend or real? When my son was three years old, he looked at me and said, Mom, I was Billy the Kid in my last life. You can imagine my surprise! Where did that come from? I asked him if there was anything else he wanted to tell me, and he said no and returned to playing with his toy cars. I thought on that a lot. Where would a three-year-old come up with a story like that? Had he lived before? Did he dream it, or did he imagine it? Does the past create the future? He never spoke of Billy the Kid again and does not remember it to this day, but anytime he said, Mom, can I tell you something? after that, I always stopped what I was doing and listened. I didnt want to hear some things he said as he got older, but to this day, he always tells me his dreams and desires. I hope my just listening to him had something to do with that.

FIRST CAME CONVERGENCE. NOW COMES VENGEANCE. His very name means “purpose.” And for the being called Telos, only one purpose remains: revenge. Telos has sworn to slay Brainiac, the nearly omnipotent intellect who stole him away from his home and family, transforming him into a man-machine with the power to destroy entire universes. He still remembers his former existence, the time when he was the noble warrior known as Arak, Son of Thunder. And if he can’t bring back the life-and the people-he loved, he will end the life of the monster responsible. Exploding from the pages of the DC mega-event CONVERGENCE comes the shocking origin and stunning next chapter in the life of its most powerful villain! Writer Jeff King (CONVERGENCE) and artists Carlo Pagulayan (CONVERGENCE), Igor Vitorino (MORTAL KOMBAT X) and Stephen Segovia (EARTH 2: WORLD’S END) present TELOS-a space-opera epic of revenge and redemption! Collects TELOS #1-6.

God Heaven and Har Magedon

From the Author's Preface: It could be this octogerian's last book and there were several things I wanted to do. One was to provide a primer in covenant theology. Another was to make more accessible the gist of some of my previous biblio-theological studies and to do so in a form serviceable to a wider readership than most of my publications. The major move in this democratic direction was to enliven the analysis of the covenants by introducing the series of covenant administrations within the intriguing story line of Har Magedon, the mountain of God. Extending as it does from creation to consummation, the tale of Har Magedon readily accommodates the total history of the covenants . . . Moreover, quite apart from such considerations the current state of secularized and dispensational versions of Armageddon (fantastic fiction all) makes a review of the biblical Har Magedon motif timely. Though the covenants remain the theological foundation and heart of the matter, by its adoption as our narrative framework, Har Magedon becomes the dominant surface theme. As we track this theme through the Scriptures we discover a recurring pattern, an eschatological megastructure that appears in each of the typological world ages culminating respectively at mounts Ararat and Sinai/Zion and then once again, climactically, in the antitypical New Covenant age. This Har Magedon paradigm, which shapes our telling of the covenantal tale, consists in the following complex of elements: establishment of a kingdom covenant by the Lord of Har Magedon; a meritorious accomplishment by the covenant grantee, triumphant in the Har Magedon conflict; a common grace interim before the coming of the covenanted kingdom; an antichrist crisis; consummation of the Glory-Kingdom through a last judgement victory of the covenant Lord in a final battle of Har Magedon. If only in condensed, digest fashion the present work is thus a comprehensive biblio-theological survey of the kingdom of God from Eden to the New Jerusalem.

A New Basis for Animal Ethics

This book, the culmination of forty years of theorizing about the moral status of animals, explicates and justifies society’s moral obligation to animals in terms of the commonsense metaphysics and ethics ofAristotle’s concept of telos. Rollin uses this concept to assert that humans have a responsibility to treat animals ethically. Aristotle used the concept, from the Greek word for "end" or "purpose," as the core explanatory concept for the world we live in. We understand what an animal is by what it does. This is the nature of an animal, and helps us understand our obligations to animals.

"After The Depression II, an economic resurgence all based on refitting the mechanics of the petroleum economy caused a few new fortunes to arise but people were employed, unlike other times when so many sat idle in endless, angry meetings. It was the aim of the government at this time to plan the changeover, getting organized, producing items based on some retrofit but mostly an array of new products as the economy got moving again." Maybe as read in the history books of a later time, but damn hard to get through if you're a participant. Try this scenario: the government is the largest employer and that's smaller than the unemployed. Federal payments are slowing down and our food exports are grinding to a halt. Who put the brakes on the economy? Alternative fuel research is a priority and those working that job were well paid but some paid with their lives in a sabotage explosion that left the head tech running for her life in a decimated LasVegas. Federal authorities call in army intelligence in the form of Alonso Belen, a fast operator who locates the head tech Paige and brings her safely back to the fort, but that's only the beginning... It comes down to one question: Who would want to delay the economic recovery? Alonso and Paige face the future together, a temporary thing, they tell each other.
