Have you ever wondered about the people who lived and worked along the canals in the past? Have you ever caught a glimpse of something they might have seen or an echo of something they might have heard? Fiona Eadie certainly has, and it is this that has prompted her to write the stories of Amos the lock-keeper, Samuel the navy, Anne of the past, present and future and a host of other characters that populate the pages of Tales from the Towpath. Each gives an engaging insight into canal life in times gone by, and these intriguing tales are accompanied by historical facts and evocative illustrations by local artist Tracy Spiers.

Roger is plunged into a major engineering works as an apprentice after an idyllic childhood in Sussex. As he progresses from one shop floor to another, he finds a common factor of good, earthy humour, real help whenever he needs it and a wealth of hilarious stories shared whilst sitting round on toolboxes during tea breaks. Within the works, despite the practical jokes and the factory ladies’ very colourful language, Roger becomes increasingly aware of the engineering import and deep skills in the workforce around him. Finally, Roger has his spell on Outside Erection. Here he comes face to face with real responsibility and learns the extent to which everyone’s lives depend upon the reliable outcome of the manufacturing skills that he is learning.Throughout their time at the works, the apprentices adopt a rather unconventional attitude to their learning that ensures life is never dull. Such goings-on are quite normal and indeed secretly expected by the management. After all, wasn’t everyone in the business an apprentice at one time..? Tales from the Toolbox is a humorous autobiography which will appeal to anyone connected with the industry, past and present.

Those who built and used the Erie Canal were a bizarre society, proud pioneers on the waterway known in song and story as "the Horse Ocean," "the Roaring Giddap," or "the Raging Erie." Their considerable influence on American life and literature is the basis of this book. Canallers were colorful characters, from the "hoggee" on the towpath to the "shipshape macaroni" with stovepipe hat and badge of service taking command of a packet with the pride of an admiral, even though he was restricted by law to a speed of four miles per hour! Games and diversions were rough-and-tumble, fighting being as natural as breathing to the canallers. Stories about heroes like Sam Patch and Paddy Ryan, or the big fish that could haul a canal boat, or the big pumpkin that drained the canal—these were logical products of this "frontier" atmosphere. So were the songs—carefree, bawdy, or sad, inspired by the canal and sung throughout the land. Photographs and drawings, music and words to folk songs, maps, notes, and index are included in this first paperback edition.

Discover these “novels about the gentle rhythms of English village life,” as a community bands together to save their beloved local church (The New York Times). The first day of October brought an unheralded and violent storm, which whipped through the quiet English village of Fairacre, blowing down trees and telephone poles—and, worst of all, damaging the roof of St. Patrick’s church. The inhabitants of tiny Fairacre can’t imagine how they’ll be able to afford the repairs, until Mr. Willet suggests a fundraising festival. Preparations for a food sale, concert, school play, and gigantic Christmas bazaar are soon made—but will they be enough? With her customary humor and grace, Miss Read recounts a story of catastrophe and courage. “If you’ve ever enjoyed a visit to Mitford, you’ll relish a visit to Fairacre.” —Jan Karon “Miss Read reminds us of what is really important. And if we can’t live in her world, it’s certainly a comforting place to visit.” —USA Today
