Mike was a fraction of a second quicker. He let out his clutch earlier than everyone else on the line. His weight was positioned perfectly for just the right amount of traction and it put him in the lead. He had the "hole-shot" and would be the first one to the track entrance, a tricky, ninety-degree turn onto a thirty-foot wide course. Mike was pleased with himself. "That start ought to impress the factory boys," he thought, remembering the Honda factory representatives who were there to watch him race. His life's ambition was to get sponsorship and ride the national circuit the following season. This was his big chance to impress the factory "reps". He led the pack almost to the first turn. Then, as he began to shift his weight forward for the turn onto the track, his front wheel hit a rock hidden in the grass. The front forks bottomed out and he slid violently up the gas tank to the handlebars. His mid-section hit the bars and he felt the rear wheel rise slowly into the air. He was going to "endo" and he knew it.. In horrifying slow motion, he was down.

In the Fifties and Sixties American dirt track motorcycle racing fans' attention was focused on half-mile and mile oval flat track races and the occasional TT race looped inside the half-mile tracks to include a jump. There were a few "scramble" races on tracks but the surfaces were graded and smoothed so they were more-or-less flat track races with a few more left hand turns and a jump or two. Motocross, as we know it today was the sport of Europeans. All that changed in 1968 when motocross was "imported" into America, first as the "Inter-Am" series in 1968-'69, then as the 'Trans-Am" series in 1970. Classic race tracks ranged from the movie backlot at Westlake Village and the arid Carlsbad and Saddleback Park in California to Linnville, Ohio, and Unadilla, New York, and Pepperrell, Massachusetts. The best European riders - Roger Decoster, Jeff Smith, Joel Robert, Torsten Hallman, Bengt Aberg, Arne Kring, Vic Allan, Dave Bickers and others - competed against the brash new American like Gary Bailey, Dick Mann, Marty Tripes, Brad Lackey, Jim Pomeroy, Gary Jones, Rex Stanton, Barry Higgens, Preston Petty and more. This is the story of the beginning of what has become America's #1 dirt sport.

Motorcycling has become more than a fad in America. It is now a pastime for a growing number of people. Entire families are riding dirt bikes and ATVs for recreation. Motocross racing is the fastest growing motor sport behind NASCAR and has captured the imagination of an entire generation of fans who enjoy the excitement of extreme sports. Roy Jenkins started riding motorcycles in the early 70s and was a successful amateur racer by the time he graduated from High School. Today he is a motocross racing announcer, chaplain, teacher and journalist. Racing Fuel for the Spirit is his second book written for motorcycle riders who want inspiration and spiritual growth from the Bible. Using his 20 years of Bible teaching experience and Masters degree in Biblical Studies, this ordained minister leads weekly devotions at motocross and Arenacross races in Mississippi and Louisiana. He uses stories from his years as a Pastor, River deck hand, Oil-field commercial diver, school teacher and most importantly as a husband and father. He throws in some stories from his experiences from motocross racing, cross-country motorcycle trips, and even sailing adventures. Photos from the people, places and events are sprinkled liberally throughout the book. His calling, gift and purpose is to get the Bible into the hands of people who wont normally read it for themselves. He uses a real life story, raises an interesting question, then brings in the appropriate Bible principle, sometimes finishing off with a memorable quote for the day. In this book he includes photos from the world of motorcycling and beyond to help the reader picture the inspirational thought. Racing Fuel for the Spirit is especially helpful for those who are too busy to read, but are interested in hearing how Gods Word applies to a wide range of everyday topics such as: love, family, worry, prayer, patience, health, competing, depression, work, school, getting old, enjoying life, hope,
