Detachment had worked well as a life strategy for horse trainer Sam Schrock. Until he met Mollie Graber . . . New to Stoney Ridge, schoolteacher Mollie has come to town for a fresh start. Aware of how fleeting and fragile life is, she wants to live it boldly and bravely. When Luke Schrock, new to his role as deacon, asks the church to take in foster girls from a group home, she's the first to raise her hand. The power of love, she believes, can pick up the dropped stitches in a child's heart and knit them back together. Mollie envisions sleepovers and pillow fights. What the 11-year-old twins bring to her home is anything but. Visits from the sheriff at midnight. Phone calls from the school truancy officer. And then the most humiliating moment of all: the girls accuse Mollie of drug addiction. There's only one thing that breaks through the girls' hard shell--an interest in horses. Reluctantly and skeptically, Sam Schrock gets drawn into Mollie's chaotic life. What he didn't expect was for love to knit together the dropped stitches in his own heart . . . just in time. Suzanne Woods Fisher invites you back to the little Amish church of Stoney Ridge for a touching story of the power of love.

This book deals with the history of surgery in Papua New Guinea from the early 1800s until the beginning of the 21st Century. It spans the period from the first European contact to the emergence of highly educated sub-specialist national surgeons. It tells the story from the first impressions of ships surgeons to the introduction and development of surgery. Between 1870 and 1950 the country and the lives of its peoples changed greatly as a result of exploration, evangelisation, colonisation and war. The history traces the surgical challenges encountered as well as the colourful characters who provided the health services run by missions, companies, governments and armies. After World War II PNG progressed politically from an Australian Administered Territory to become an Independent Nation. Within a generation it had trained its own doctors and surgeons. The history is set within the context of tropical pathologies, introduced diseases, surgical progress and the lives of the medics who have contributed to the Stori bilong kamapim long dokta bilong katim man (The history of surgery).

Riffling through the wardrobes of years gone by, costume historian Lucy Adlington reveals the rich stories underlying the clothes we wear in this stylish tour of the most important developments in the history of fashion, from ancient times to the present day. Starting with underwear – did you know Elizabeth I owned just one pair of drawers, worn only after her death? – she moves garment by garment through Western attire, exploring both the items we still wear every day and those that have gone the way of the dodo (sugared petticoats, farthingales and spatterdashers to name but a few). Beautifully illustrated throughout, and crammed with fascinating and eminently quotable facts, Stitches in Time shows how the way we dress is inextricably bound up with considerations of aesthetics, sex, gender, class and lifestyle – and offers us the chance to truly appreciate the extraordinary qualities of these, our most ordinary possessions.

Two gay men of later years share their love of needlepoint in a fully colour illustrated volume displaying a body of original work created over the forty year span of their lives from 1977 until 2007. Using stories recounting some of their inspiration and experiences enjoyed on their extensive travels, David Evans and Nigel Quiney celebrate their lives with colour and originality in their work which is revealed as being so much more than merely decorative. A great deal of thought and interpretation have been invested in the symbology contained in many of these works which include wall hangings, panels, cushions, table tops (under glass), chair and stool coverings, spectacle cases, handbags, decorated denim jackets, hats and berets ... A sequel to this volume has just been produced and converted into e:book format entitled THE WORDSTITCHER by David Evans embracing the work sewn since 2007, a book which gives equal importance to David's poetry which is featured on much of this essentially English work.

Stitches in Time is essentially the biography of a quilt that has been in Leba Wine's family for many generations. When the quilt became hers, when she held this confection, she was seduced by its beauty and mystery. The central figure of the quilt is a black rider upon a black horse - his plume, epaulets, & spurs picked out in silver thread. Surrounding this brooding figure are jeweled hands, strutting peacocks & garnet-eyed dogs. What was this all about?

Drawing from 167 examples of decorative needlework — primarily samplers and quilts from 114 collections across the United States — made by individual women aged forty years and over between 1820 and 1860, this exquisitely illustrated book explores how women experienced social and cultural change in antebellum America. The book is filled with individual examples, stories, and over eighty fine color photographs that illuminate the role that samplers and needlework played in the culture of the time. For example, in October 1852, Amy Fiske (1785 – 1859) of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, stitched a sampler. But she was not a schoolgirl making a sampler to learn her letters. Instead, as she explained, “The above is what I have taken from my sampler that I wrought when I was nine years old. It was w[rough]t on fine cloth [and] it tattered to pieces. My age at this time is 66 years.” Situated at the intersection of women’s history, material culture study, and the history of aging, this book brings together objects, diaries, letters, portraits, and prescriptive literature to consider how middle-class American women experienced the aging process. Chapters explore the physical and mental effects of “old age” on antebellum women and their needlework, technological developments related to needlework during the antebellum period and the tensions that arose from the increased mechanization of textile production, and how gift needlework functioned among friends and family members. Far from being solely decorative ornaments or functional household textiles, these samplers and quilts served their own ends. They offered aging women a means of coping, of sharing and of expressing themselves. These “threads of time” provide a valuable and revealing source for the lives of mature antebellum women. Publication of this book was made possible in part through generous funding from the Coby Foundation, Ltd and from the Quilters Guild of Dallas, Helena Hibbs Endowment Fund.
