The first complete guide-for use by adults and children-to creating fun and educational book clubs for kids. As authors of The Book Club Cookbook, the classic guide to integrating great food and food-related discussion into book club gatherings, Judy Gelman and Vicki Levy Krupp hear a common refrain from parents, librarians, teachers, community leaders and kids themselves: "How about writing a book for kids' book clubs?" Indeed, in recent years youth organizations, parents, libraries, schools, and our local, state, and federal governments have launched thousands of book clubs for children as a way to counter falling literacy rates and foster a love of reading. Based on surveys representing five hundred youth book clubs across the country and interviews with parents, kids, educators, and librarians, The Kids' Book Club Book features: _- the top fifty favorite book club reads for children ages eight to eighteen; _- ideas and advice on forming great kids' book clubs-and tips for kids who want to start their own book clubs; _- recipes, activities, and insights from such bestselling children's book authors as Christopher Paolini, Lois Lowry, Jerry Spinelli, Nancy Farmer, Christopher Paul Curtis, Andrew Clements, Laurie Halse Anderson, Norton Juster, and many others. From recipes for the Dump Punch and egg salad sandwiches included in Kate DiCamillo's Because of Winn-Dixie to instructionson how to make soap carvings like the ones left in the knot-hole of a tree in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, this book provides a bounty of ideas for making every kids' book club a success.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2019 im Fachbereich Englisch - Literatur, Werke, Note: 1,0, Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg im Breisgau (Institut für Anglistik), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "I’m Jeff and I hate reading." (Wilhelm, 2008) This statement illustrates the problem teachers are faced with when teaching novels. When it comes to reading, students seem to be reluctant and not motivated to engage in a novel for a longer time. Many pupils do not enjoy reading and do not read in their leisure time. Therefore, one has to choose a novel carefully. If the novel does not appeal to the students, then there is no reason to teach it. In this term paper the novel Holes by Louis Sachar was chosen due to its topics and its learning potential. Holes tells the story of a young adult named Stanley who is sent to a bootcamp in the desert and has to dig holes as a punishment for a crime he did not commit. The book is about friendship, justice, racism and about revenge and love. All these themes are connected and intertwined by a superior curse that decides on the fates of the characters. Louis Sachar, born in 1954, is an author for children’s books and he wrote several novels. His book Holes, published in 1998, received many awards including the National Book Award, which is a prestigious book price in the USA. Stanley Yelnats’ Survival Guide to Camp Green Lake (2003) and Small Steps (2006) are sequels to the novel.

The summer after junior year of high school looks bleak for Alton Richards. His girlfriend has dumped him to hook up with his best friend. He has no money and no job. His parents insist that he drive his great-uncle Lester to his bridge club four times a week and be his cardturner -- whatever that means. Alton's uncle is old, blind, very sick, and very rich. But Alton's parents aren't the only ones trying to worm their way into Lester Trapp's good graces. They're in competition with his longtime housekeeper, his alluring young nurse, and the crazy Castaneda family, who seem to have a mysterious influence over him. Alton soon finds himself intrigued by his uncle, by the game of bridge, and especially by the pretty and shy Toni Castaneda. As the summer goes on, he struggles to figure out what it all means, and ultimately to figure out the meaning of his own life. Through Alton's wry observations, Louis Sachar explores the disparity between what you know and what you think you know. With his incomparable flair and inventiveness, he examines the elusive differences between perception and reality -- and inspires readers to think and think again.
