"Art" is not the first topic that comes to mind when thinking of Paul Auster's novels and films. "Solitude", "emptiness", "loss" and "desperation" are more likely to suit the reader's expectation. Add "intertextuality", "pastiche", and "metalinguistic games" and you find yourself amidst postmodern scholars appraising his works. However, it is indeed a mistake not to consider creativity and art when reading Paul Auster. Although his protagonists often find themselves confronted with hopeless predicaments, they often manage to overcome their crises of orientation by means of creative processes. Art is presented as a strategy to cope with the chaos of the postmodern living situation. Martina Süßenguth looks at Auster's early novels and films and analyses how Auster views art as an experience through which to cope with reality. She examines the inclusion of chance into creative processes as well as Auster's collaborations with contemporary artists like Sophie Calle and Sam Messer.

'The streets are full of admirable craftsmen, but so few practical dreamers.' – Man Ray What if there were movies made the same way as suits, custom fitted, each one tailored for one person? Not broadcast, but narrowcast? Not theatres around the world showing the same globalized pictures, but instead a local circumstance, a movie so particular, so peculiar, it could cure night blindness or vertigo? Welcome to the world of fringe movies, where artists have been busy putting queer shoulders to the wheels, or bending light to talk about First Nations rights (and making it funny at the same time), or demonstrating how a personality can be taken apart and put together again, all in the course of a ten-minute movie which might take years to make. Practical Dreamers takes us to this other side of the media plantation. In it, twenty-seven Canadian artists dish about how they get it done and why it matters. The conversations are personal, up close and jargon free, smart without smarting. The stellar cast includes smartbomb Steve Reinke; visionary Peter Mettler; Middle East specialist Jayce Salloum; queer Asian avatars Richard Fung, Midi Onodera, Ho Tam, and Wayne Yung; footage recyclers Aleesa Cohene and Jubal Brown; overhead projector king Daniel Barrow; First Nations vets Kent Monkman and Shelley Niro; international art presence Paulette Philips; and documentarian Donigan Cumming. These in-depth talks come lavishly illustrated in an oversized volume.

What's in a game? More than 15 artists explore that question in this wonderfully playful volume that documents an exciting new MassMoCA exhibition of the same name. Scheduled to open in June of 2001, Game Show is, not surprisingly, the first major exhibition to investigate this topic. But games have appeared in works of art and philosophy throughout the 20th century as theories about chance, systems, and play have found their way into recent critical thought. The exhibition -- and this book -- includes works by Christian Jankowski, Kay Rosen, Marcel Duchamp, Perry Hoberman, Uri Tzaig, Maurizio Cattelan, Sophie Calle, Carsten Holler, and Gabriel Orozco, among others. Their paintings, sculpture, photography, and video installations explore every aspect of games, from the deceptive simplicity of a soccer match, to the forces of chance and luck to the festinating world of wordplay.Whimsically -- and beautifully -- designed to resemble a child's activity book, Gome Show features a variety of games designed specifically for this volume by exhibition artists. In addition, it includes an essay by renowned critic Slavoj Zizek who examines the importance of games to 20th-century philosophers, the works of which provide the basis for the museum's exhibition. This surprising and impressive conjunction of art, philosophy and popular culture documents yet another innovative multi-media installation from one of the nation's premiere museums.
