Roy Whitecross served as a Private in the 8th Division AIF from 1941 to 1945; a journey that saw him incarcerated as a Japanese POW first in Malaya, then Burma, Thailand and Japan. He worked on the infamous Burma-Thailand Railway, a project that saw one man die out of every two who worked on it; he endured deprivation, starvation, disease, torture and brutality - but he did not endure it alone. SLAVES OF THE SON OF HEAVEN is a gripping story of triumph, defeat, hope and defiance and a fitting memorial to those ordinary soldiers who never returned home. It is also a testament to the fact that in the midst of hell, hope can survive.

'The task of the benevolent person is surely to diligently seek to promote the benefit of the world and eliminate harm to the world' The Mzi is among the founding texts of the Chinese philosophical tradition, presenting China's earliest ethical, political, and logical theories. The collected works introduce concepts, assumptions, and issues that had a profound, lasting influence throughout the classical and early imperial eras. Mzi and his followers developed the world's first ethical theory, and presented China's first account of the origin of political authority from a state of nature. They were prominent social activists whose moral and political reform movement sought to improve the welfare of the common people and eliminate elite extravagance and misuse of power. In this new translation, Chris Fraser focuses on the philosophical aspects of the writing and allows readers to truly enter the Mohists' world of thought. This abridged edition includes the essential political and social topics of concern to this vital movement. Informed by traditional and recent scholarship, the translation presents the Mohists' ideas and arguments clearly, precisely, and coherently, while accurately reflecting the meaning, terminology, and style of the original.

History is always corrected; myths are always waiting to be broken! Without any preparation for a different environment for survival, he was mercilessly caught up in the flow of transmigration: Suddenly, there was a whole new group of people who loved him, cared for him, hated him, and hated him. Here, he was being watched. Was all this what he wanted? His arrival had turned history into a mess. Even Wu Lin was unable to calm down ...

The Huainanzi has in recent years been recognized by scholars as one of the seminal works of Chinese thought at the beginning of the imperial era, a summary of the full flowering of early Taoist philosophy. This book presents a study of three key chapters of the Huainanzi, "The Treatise on the Patterns of Heaven," "The Treatise on Topography," and "The Treatise on the Seasonal Rules," which collectively comprise the most comprehensive extant statement of cosmological thinking in the early Han period. Major presents, for the first time, full English translations of these treatises. He supplements the translations with detailed commentaries that clarify the sometimes arcane language of the text and presents a fascinating picture of the ancient Chinese view of how the world was formed and sustained, and of the role of humans in the cosmos.

All Under Heaven

"In this succinct yet ample work, Zhao Tingyang as one of China's most distinguished and respected intellectuals, provides a profoundly original philosophical interpretation of China's story. Over the past few decades, the question "where did China come from?" has absorbed the thoughts of many of China's best historians. Zhao, keenly aware of the persistent and pernicious asymmetry in the prevailing way scholars have gone about theorizing China according to Western concepts and categories, has tasked both Chinese and Western scholars alike to "rethink China." To this end, Zhao introduces what he terms a distinctively Chinese centripetal "whirlpool" model of world order to interpret the historical progression of China's "All-Under-Heaven" Tianxia identity construction on the central plain of China. In this book, Zhao forwards a novel and compelling thesis on not only how we should understand China, but also until recently, how China has understood itself"--
