Information, no matter how important, cannot speak for itself. To tell its story, it relies on us to give it a clear voice. No information is more critical than quantitative data ... numbers that reveal what's happening, how our organizations are performing, and opportunities to do better. Numbers are usually presented in tables and graphs, but few are properly designed, resulting not only in poor communication, but at times in miscommunication. This is a travesty, because the skills needed to present quantitative information effectively are simple to learn. Good communication doesn't just happen; it is the result of good design.

Pomp, circumstance, and murder mark the graduation ceremony at Marcus Rome State University. Famed philanthropist and commencement speaker, Douglas Norwood, lies dead. There is no apparent motive. A cryptic message to a local television station provides many questions but few answers. Sergeant Tom Warren and the campus police are faced with the grim task of untangling the mess. University President Norman Mulholland wants a solution fast, and appoints mathematics professor Jim Albright to serve as liaison between him and the police. In an unconventional move, Warren and Albright enlist a group of amateur sleuths composed of Albright's sexy psychologist wife, Donna; eccentric mathematical genius Elmo Sherwin and his wife, Michelle; and Mulholland himself to work with Warren. With the exception of the president, this is the same group that pinpointed another campus murderer three years earlier (see Math Is Murder). The team soon learns the crime is more complicated than it first appeared, and watches with growing anxiety as the university's situation deteriorates. Will they be able to solve this mystery in time to prevent more carnage? The clues in this whodunit are everywhere. It's up to the investigative team and the reader to find them. The problem is recognizing them.

War of Numbers

In the fall of 1967, political and military leaders in Washington said the Vietnam War was approaching “the crossover point”: More Vietcong soldiers were dying in battle each week than could be recruited. CIA analyst Sam Adams, however, was insisting the good news was an illusion. His estimates of enemy ranks and morale varied wildly from those being released by military intelligence for public consumption, and for use by commanders in the field. Adams' findings indicated the war was unwinnable, and when US leaders failed to acknowledge basic facts, he knew the intelligence was being politicized. From inside the CIA and then after quitting the agency in 1973, Adams embarked on a one-man crusade to expose the truth. He loved intelligence work, and his enthusiasm for it shines throughout this illuminating memoir. Thanks to Adams, newsman Mike Wallace produced his influential CBS News documentary “The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception;” General William Westmoreland was called to account, and his book dramatizes in clear, compelling prose how America’s involvement in Southeast Asia became such a tragedy.

Prime Numbers Proof and Journey Finding the Fingerprint of God

Most of nature is complex, are prime numbers so complex that we cannot solve them. Martin P. Miller, a nationally certified architect, seeks to answer that question and others in this mathematical and philosophical work that reveals the fingerprints of God on multiple levels. He shares how as a young child, he made a table that fifty years later solved prime numbers. After watching a CD on the history of mathematics, he decided to solve what everyone said was the randomness of prime numbers. The number three – which is everywhere – proved very significant. Miller also shares a near-death experience and seeks to answer questions such as: • Why is there bright light in heaven? • Can we travel backward in time and rewrite history? • What are dreams and what do they mean? • Can the seeming randomness of prime numbers be similar to life’s experiences? Throughout the book, the author seeks to find order in chaos, rhythm in randomness, and the fingerprints of God – finding proof of his existence in nature, in our DNA, and in the universal language of mathematics.
