In this book, Louise Revell examines questions of Roman imperialism and Roman ethnic identity and explores Roman imperialism as a lived experience based around the paradox of similarity and difference. Her case studies of public architecture in several urban settings provides an understanding of the ways in which urbanism, the emperor and religion were part of the daily encounters of the peoples in these communities. Revell applies the ideas of agency and practice in her examination of the structures that held the empire together and how they were implicated within repeated daily activities. Rather than offering a homogenized "ideal type" description of Roman cultural identity, she uses these structures as a way to understand how these encounters differed between communities and within communities, thus producing a more nuanced interpretation of what it was to be Roman. Bringing an innovative approach to the problem of Romanization, Revell breaks from traditional models and cuts across a number of entrenched debates such as arguments about the imposition of Roman culture or resistance to Roman rule.

Kidnapped tells the story of David Balfour, a young man of the Lowlands, thesouthern part of Scotland. David's father, Alexander Balfour, has recently died, and his mother died some time before, so he is now an orphan. Since he is nowseventeen years old, he has decided it is time to go and seek his fortune. Beforehe leaves for the city of Edinburgh, he meets with his guardian, Mr. Campbell.Campbell reveals that David has an uncle, Ebenezer Balfour, of the House ofShaws--meaning that David is, to his surprise, from a wealthy family. Daviddecides to go to Cramond, where his uncle lives, and meet his wealthy relatives.David walks two days to Edinburgh, and soon finds his way to Cramond. As hebegins to ask about the House of Shaws, he finds it is an unpopular place. HisUncle Ebenezer seems particularly ill regarded by the community, and is in factthe only occupant of the house. Nevertheless, David continues on to the House ofShaws. Ebenezer gives him a cold welcome, and seems very interested in thedeath of David's father. Ebenezer treats David badly, almost as if David were athief, but he wins some of David's respect by giving the lad nearly forty pounds. But when Ebenezer nearly sends David to his death in the tower adjacent to thehouse, David demands to know why his uncle hates him and, if he does, why hewants him to stay at the House of Shaws.A cabin boy, Ransome, arrives at the House of Shaws. He has been sent byCaptain Hoseason of the Covenant, a ship that deals with some of Ebenezer'sfinancial ventures. Hoseason has requested to see Ebenezer, so the old mandecides to go to the port of Queensferry with Ransome and David. David isinterested in seeing the ships at the port, so he willingly goes along. At first,Hoseason seems very pleasant. He even warns David that Ebenezer meansmischief toward him. Hoseason then asks to speak to David on the boat, andDavid agrees, being interested in seeing more of the boat. Once he is on,however, the boat swiftly departs, and as he screams at the dock for help, thesailors knock David unconscious. He awakes in the dark storage deck of the Covenant. As he drifts in and out ofsleep, he quickly becomes ill, and soon he is lingering near death. The ship'smate, Riach, demands that the boy be allowed to sleep in the healthier forecastleof the ship with the other sailors. Hoseason reluctantly agrees, and as Davidrecovers he becomes friends with Riach and a few of the other sailors. Then,Ransome is accidentally killed by Mr. Shuan, and David becomes the new cabinboy. After a few days at this new job, the Covenant strikes and sinks another boat. One man survives, a strange Highland man dressed in the clothing of a Frenchsoldier. The stranger tells the captain that he is carrying the rent money for hisdisenfranchised chieftain. The two men make an agreement that Hoseason willdrop the stranger off in Linnhe Loch, but no sooner is the captain gone from theRound-House--the officers' lounge where the visiting stranger is kept--whenDavid overhears the officers plotting to murder the stranger and take his belt.David tells this to the stranger, and agrees to fight by his side. The stranger sayshis name is Alan Breck Stewart. Alan and David successfully defend the Round-House from the sailors, Alan killing several men and even David taking twohimself. Alan, impressed with David's courage, gives David a silver button fromhis coat. The captain and Alan negotiate, and the captain agrees to drop Alanand David off near Linnhe Loch.

Kidnapped is the story of David Balfour, a daring and proud boy, who finds himself involved in a double series of adventures: those produced by his own personal situation - an orphan whose inheritance has been usurped - and those derived from his encounter with Alan Breck, who immerse him in the sociopolitical background of the aftermath of the 18th century English civil war. All this narrated in Stevenson's clean and musical prose.

At the beginning of the book, David (Davie) Balfour is a recently orphaned seventeen-year-old. His father has just died, so it is up to him to seek his own fortune. A good friend of his, the Protestant Minister of Essendean, hands Davie a letter from his deceased father telling him to head to the house of Shaws. Davie doesn't know how his father is related to the house of Shaws, but he is excited at the idea of meeting a laird (a kind of Scottish nobleman, like a "lord"). He thinks maybe he'll be able to get a job in the Shaws household. So he walks to the seat of the house of Shaws, near Edinburgh, to ask for help. When Davie arrives at the house, however, he is much disappointed. The owner is actually Davie's uncle, Ebenezer Balfour. Ebenezer is a miser and kind of a jerk. He even attempts to kill Davie on one occasion. Why is he so threatened by Davie? We're not going to find out for sure until around Chapter 29 of 30. Still, Davie is fairly sure that Ebenezer hates him because he is the rightful heir to the house of Shaws. At any rate, Davie manages to get the upper hand over Ebenezer, who promises to bring Davie to see his lawyer, Mr. Rankeillor, to get a full explanation of Ebenezer's relationship to Davie's father. On their way to see Mr. Rankeillor, Ebenezer insists on stopping by a ship that he's made some investments in, which is anchored in the seaside town of Queensferry. The ship is called the Covenant and is captained by a Mr. Hoseason. Once Davie is aboard, Hoseason distracts him with a tour of the ship while Ebenezer hops in a rowboat and rows back to shore. Davie has been kidnapped! It turns out that Ebenezer has told Hoseason to sell Davie to a plantation in the Carolinas. Davie's in a real pickle.
