Jacob Riis (1849-1914) was the author of How the Other Half Lives (1890). This study of his life and work includes excerpts from Riis s diary, chronicling romance, poverty, temptation, and, after many false starts, employment as a writer and reformer. In the second half, Yochelson describes how Riis used photography to shock and influence his readers. The authors describe Riis s intellectual education and discuss the influence of How the Other Half Lives on urban history. It shows that Riis argued for charity rather than social justice; but the fact that he understood what it was to be homeless did humanize Riis s work, and that work has continued to inspire reformers. Yochelson focuses on how Riis came to obtain his now famous images, how they were manipulated for publication, and their influence on the young field of photography."

This revealing biography of a pioneering photojournalist and social reformer Jacob Riis shows how he brought to light one of the worst social justice issues plaguing New York City in the late 1800s--the tenement housing crisis--using newly invented flash photography. Jacob Riis was familiar with poverty. He did his best to combat it in his hometown of Ribe, Denmark, and he experienced it when he immigrated to the United States in 1870. Jobs for immigrants were hard to get and keep, and Jacob often found himself penniless, sleeping on the streets or in filthy homeless shelters. When he became a journalist, Jacob couldn't stop seeing the poverty in the city around him. He began to photograph overcrowded tenement buildings and their impoverished residents, using newly developed flash powder to illuminate the constantly dark rooms to expose the unacceptable conditions. His photographs inspired the people of New York to take action. Gary Kelley's detailed illustrations perfectly accompany Alexis O'Neill's engaging text in this STEAM title for young readers.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1, Martin Luther University (Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: American Photography, language: English, abstract: This paper is concentrated on the work of Jacob Riis. He was one famous police reporter at the end of the 19th century. He dedicated his work to the immigrants of New York. At this time the city was overcrowded by people from all over the world and it was the city's problem to care for them in a proper way. Riis noticed this abuse and wanted to fight against it. Therefore he took pictures of the immigrants living in bad surroundings to convince people of the middle class that something needs to be changed. This paper is going to analyze three of his pictures with special attention to Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright's book An Introduction to Visual Culture: Practices of Looking. This book deals with visual culture and explains how people use and understand pictures. It refers to all kind of media such as photography, painting, film and television. Images are analysed under certain aspects. The book raises the question of how meaning originates or how the viewer constructs meaning. It refers to the principle of the gaze or spectatorship. It looks behind the structures of representation and the subject, and it refers to the Other as well as to voyeurism. This paper will look exactly at these four aspects, explains them and tries then to connect them with Riis' photographs. But before one can take a look at Riis' images and their analysis, this paper is going to give an insight into Riis' life in order to understand why the immigrant's life seemed to be as such important to him.

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,3, University of Tubingen, language: English, abstract: In the following paper, the author examines the debate if Riis was a Social Activist, who wanted to enhance the New York slums in the late 19th century, or a Muckraker, who aspired to become famous at any price. The primary source of this debate will be Jacob Riis’ most famous work "How the Other Half Lives". Moreover, this debate will be developed in respect to both Riis’ biography and "How the Other Half Lives"‘content, its structure, its language and its style in general. Jacob August Riis "How the Other Half Lives - Studies among the Tenements of New York" which was first published in 1890 is an early work of photojournalism. It deals with the tenement and slum conditions in New York in the late 19th century. "How the Other Half Lives" is a documentation and not a fictional story. All 25 chapters report on occurrences which the author has researched and experienced. Jacob Riis uses numerous photographs, sketches and ground plans in each chapter to visualize his words to the reader. Some photographs are recorded by the author himself who makes use of new innovations. Riis’ usage of the flashlight was one of the newest and groundbreaking methods to take pictures at the end of the 19th century. He intensely experimented with flash and refined the work with his camera. Since Riis put a lot of time, active work and effort in both the photography and the text component, he was regarded as a Social Activist. Riis states that his publication of photojournalism is based on changing and fighting against the social injustice in New York by "providing for every man a clean and comfortable home." In opposition to that, Riis was also regarded as a Muckraker. A Muckraker looks "for information about people’s private lives that they do not wish to make public" (Oxford Dictionary) in order to scandalize. Since he indeed uncovered unknown details of the slums, the lives of the tenants and the power of the landlords, Riis could be labeled as a Muckraker who “scraped up [the covert filth of the society] with the muck-rake” (Roosevelt).
