Millenarianism and Messianism in Early Modern European Culture

The earliest scientific studies of Jewish messianism were conducted by the scholars of the Wissenschaft des Judentums school, particularly Heinrich Graetz, the first great Jewish historian of the Jews since Josephus. These researches were invaluable because they utilized primary sources in print and manuscript which had been previously unknown or used only in polemics. The Wissenschaft studies themselves, however, prove to be polemics as well on closer inspection. Among the goals of this group was to demonstrate that Judaism is a rational and logical faith whose legitimacy and historical progress deserve recognition by the nations of Europe. Mystical and messianic beliefs which might undermine this image were presented as aberrations or the result of corrosive foreign influences on the Jews. Gershom Scholem took upon himself the task of returning mysticism and messianism to their rightful central place in the panorama of Jewish thought. Jewish messianism was, for Scholem, a central theme in the philosophy and life of the Jews throughout their history, shaped anew by each generation to fit its specific hopes and needs. Scholem emphasized that this phenomenon was essentially independent of messianic or millenarian trends among other peoples. For example, in discussing messianism in the early modern era Scholem describes a trunk of influence on the Jewish psyche set off by the expulsion from Spain in 1492.

Haggai Zechariah 1 8

Haggai and Zechariah 1-8, Volume 25B in the acclaimed Anchor Bible part of the Scripture known as the Minor Prophets, were written during a critical period in Israel's history, the momentous return of the Jews from Babylonian exile. Following the conquest of Babylon by the Persian Empire, the Israelites sought to reestablish their ethnic and religious legacy in Judah. This was a time of profound turmoil and uncertainty, and Haggai and Zechariah provided a crucial measure of support and inspiration. They rallied Israel's energies and exhorted their fellow countrymen to heed the word of God. Under their guidance the Jews restored the Temple at Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by the armies of Nebuchadnezzar. Together the two prophets guided Israel through an important transitional epoch, and reconciled the influences of Persia's dominion with the sacred traditions of the Hebrew people. In this illuminating new translation and commentary, Carol and Eric Meyers consider the Book of Haggai and the first eight chapters of the Book of Zechariah in a linguistic, social, and historical context. They underscore the literary artistry, the political acumen, and the prophetic authority of these fascinating volumes that proved so vital to the survival of Israel and the preservation of the Jewish faith.

The Messianic Temple

"More than 2600 years ago, the Prophet Ezekiel was shown a vision of a future Temple to which all the nations on earth would ascend in everlasting peace and harmony. A fine trickle of water flows from under the threshold of the Holy of Holies in this Temple, eventually becoming a great river whose waters heal every wound and sickness. The river then flows to the Mediterranean and sweetens all the oceans of the world, making them drinkable. This is the Messianic Temple. The key to the construction of this Temple is learning its design, a process considered the first stage of building it, but this study was neglected throughout the ages because the chapters describing the Third Temple (Ezek. 40-48) are difficult and confusing. In recent years, new light has enabled us to begin to understand Ezekiel's vision of the Messianic Temple. Now, after a decade of research, Rabbi Chaim Clorfene has given us a major work that explains every detail of Ezekiel's vision of the Third Temple. The Messianic Temple presents the last nine chapters of the Book of Ezekiel, verse by verse, in the original Hebrew with a new English translation and classic commentaries. Over 200 color diagrams and 3D illustrations make it possible for everyone to learn Ezekiel's design and understand it...easily! Now, we can begin to build the Third Temple."--Publisher description.
