The US government is planning to spend an estimated US$1 trillion over 30 years to modernise or replace its triad of air-, land- and sea-based nuclear weapons. These plans have huge implications for the security of the United States and its allies, its public finances and the salience of nuclear weapons in global politics. This Adelphi book argues that the US need not replicate its Cold War triad to achieve credible and reliable deterrence. It proposes viable alternatives that would allow the US to maintain deterrence at a lower cost, thereby freeing up funds to ease pressing shortfalls in spending on conventional procurement and nuclear security. These alternative structures--which propose a reduction in the size and shape of the arsenal--have distinct advantages over the existing plan in maintaining strategic stability vis-à-vis Russia and China; upholding arms-control treaties; boosting the security of US nuclear forces; and supporting the global non-proliferation regime. They would also endow the US with a force better suited to the strategic environment of the twenty-first century, and mark an advance on the existing triad in supporting conventional military operations. -- Back cover.

The author looks at the relationship between the United States and Norway from the Second World War through to the 1980s in a book that is solidly based on research in American, British and Norwegian archives, as well as interviews with many policymakers. In particular, Tamnes pays attention to Norway's somewhat ambivalent position of encouraging on the one hand an American commitment to the country's defence, while on the other maintaining a policy of allowing no foreign military bases or nuclear weapons on Norwegian soil.

In a time of great opportunity in nuclear arms diplomacy, Westerners still lack a sophisticated understanding of how the Soviets negotiate. Bennett here provides a coherent, penetrating model for understanding Soviet negotiating tactics and strategy, based on carefully analyzed case studies. Through his analysis, Westerners can begin to understand the factors that influence Soviet decision-making. This book systematically sorts and organizes the existing literature on Soviet tactics--supplemented by interviews with former U.S. negotiators--into a coherent theory.

In Catholicism and the Renewal of American Democracy, George Weigel clearly describes the erosion of the center in the American democracy and the disjointed and divisive politics of our contemporary situation. Throughout the book, one finds a hope that, despite the apparent decline of American democracy, the time is right for Catholicism to be viewed as a source of insight, virtue, and leadership. Weigel is faithful to his religious tradition, yet he is willing to see in the present chaos an opportunity for the constructive transformation of both the Catholic tradition and American democracy. He urges believers to seize this "Catholic moment55 and take an active role in society. -- From http://www.jstor.org (Oct. 11, 2014).

"This volume explores some of the 21st century's most challenging questions in international peace and security, with a focus on a crucial region: South Asia. The authors have done a great public service by straightforwardly and lucidly presenting their penetrating analyses to a general readership." Lee H. Hamilton, President and Director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and former Vice Chairman of the 9/11 Commission. "South Asia at a Crossroads is an important contribution to the literature on global peace and security. The book brings together a broad range of perspectives - both global and regional - on complex security challenges, especially those underlined by science and technology. The book should be a valuable resource for all those who want to better understand the various dimensions of the conflict in South Asia." Professor Paolo Cotta-Ramusino is the Secretary General of the International Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995. He is a Professor of Physics at the University of Milan, Italy.
