Mental math is a skill people practice on a daily basis, often subconsciously, which involves doing calculations in your head. In mental math, you don't have to write down elaborate details concerning the variables involved. Children are usually encouraged to learn mental math skills early in school, because being good at mental calculations can make a person successful in many other fields. Please note that even if being good at mental math does not necessarily signify high intelligence, people usually think it does, and that perception can help you obtain opportunities for advanced study or career development. Mental math proficiency is not just good for academic pursuits but also helps make life easier overall. This book dives deep into the mechanics of mental math and provides examples that will help the reader build mental math proficiency quickly.

How fast can you calculate? Would you like to be faster? This book presents the time honored tricks and tips of calculation, from a fresh perspective, to boost the speed at which you can add -- whether a couple of numbers, or columns so long an accountant may faint. Find out how to subtract, multiply, divide, and find square roots more quickly. What's more, this book gives suggestions for how to find answers that are good enough for tricky tasks like dividing by 17. It includes brand new ways to multiply and divide irrational numbers such as pi, e, the square root of 2, and the golden ratio. It has sections devoted to ancient mathematics, and the techniques we can borrow from previous and other cultures, in order to calculate more quickly. Examples, some serious, some fun, come from everyday life or from history -- like hot dog eating competitions, the Vatican's cricket team, the molecular weight of the molecule with the world's longest name, and the amount of people taken by Henry VIII to arguably history's biggest party, the Field of the Cloth of Gold. In an age of timed multiple-choice questions, the swifter you can sum, or rule out wrong answers, the better you will do. If you love to play with numbers, this book will be recreational reading. And if you ever wonder whether simple arithmetic problems can crop up in everyday life, this book provides a fresh perspective.

An action research project was conducted in order to determine if the utilization of mental mathematics exercises had a positive impact on student mental math abilities for foundational math students. The project took place at a career college which awards both two- and four- year degrees in Moorhead, Minnesota with 12 students. Students were taught rapid math techniques from Rapid Math Tricks and Tips: 30 Days to Number Power by Edward Julius using web-based instruction. Each of the techniques required students to utilize the test of reasonableness to determine if their final answer was appropriate to what the original question was asking. Research included data collection and analysis for a period of five weeks. The research suggested that implementation of daily mental mathematics did help students gain mental math abilities.

If math excites you, come along and learn even more. You will be entertained as you learn new ways to explore math. Prerequisite: Must be able to add and multiply single digits from one through nine. MATH 4 2-DAY IS A JOURNEY! It is a collective work from a course, titled Math-A-Nation, that is taught over six Saturdays to intellectually gifted children, grades 4 to 8. This popular course, which is the basis of the book, has been offered through the Super Saturday Program, here in Cincinnati for almost thirty years. This program, offered by PAGE - a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, serves the best and brightest young minds in the region, on a campus of the University of Cincinnati. Both students and their parents have grown to love the Math-A-Nation course and have helped add to and polish its content over the years. Parent and student feedback always mentions that these math topics and techniques are not available to them through traditional educational channels. Overall, this book was written to insure that my children, and yours, are equipped with these important math concepts for mental training designed to insure their preparation in the modern competitive world.
