The New York Times bestselling author of Bringing Down the House and The Accidental Billionaires tells his most incredible story yet: A true drama of obscene wealth, crime, rivalry, and betrayal from deep inside the world of billionaire Russian oligarchs that Booklist called “one more example of just how talented a storyteller [Mezrich] is.” Meet two larger-than-life Russians: former mathematician Boris Berezovsky, who moved into more lucrative ventures as well as politics, becoming known as the Godfather of the Kremlin; and Roman Abramovich, a dashing young entrepreneur who built one of Russia’s largest oil companies from the ground up. After a chance meeting on a yacht in the Caribbean, the men became locked in a complex partnership, surfing the waves of privatization after the fall of the Soviet regime and amassing mega fortunes while also taking the reins of power in Russia. With Berezovsky serving as the younger entrepreneur’s krysha—literally, his roof, his protector—they battled their way through the “Wild East” of Russia until their relationship soured when Berezovsky attacked President Vladimir Putin in the media. Dead bodies trailed Berezovsky as he escaped to London, where an associate died painfully of Polonium poisoning, creating an international furor. As Abramovich prospered, Berezovsky was found dead in a luxurious London town house, declared a suicide. With unprecedented, exclusive first-person sourcing, Mezrich takes us inside a world of unimaginable wealth, power, and corruption to uncover this exciting story, a true-life thriller epic for our time—“Wolf Hall on the Moskva” (Bookpage).

The very name of this detective made the criminal world tremble. He is the one who first created a uniquely accurate card index of criminals and developed a special evidence identification system later adopted by Scotland Yard. At the turn of the 20th century, Arkady Koshko was a legend. At the International Congress of Criminal Investigators in 1913 in Switzerland, Russian forensic research methods were recognized as the best in the world because of their exceptionally high crime detection rate. This achievement is no wonder, since the Imperial Criminal Investigation Department was headed by "the most important detective in Russia," the "Russian Sherlock Holmes"-General Arkady Franzevich Koshko (1867 - 1928). This high success rate was achieved through a new system of identification based on specific classification and an extensive archive of anthropometric, photographic and fingerprint data. It was a breakthrough in criminal investigation now recognized throughout the world. After the Russian Revolution in 1917, A. F. Koshko migrated to France and was invited to work for Scotland Yard, but refused and dedicated his last days to writing detective stories from his own experiences. These memoirs of A. F. Koshko describe the most notorious and scandalous crimes of that time in Russia and include 19 of his stories.

Author Serguei Blinov grew up in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as the son of an engineer and a high school history teacher. Early on in life, he set his sights on becoming a medical doctor. He also met the love of his life, Lioudmila Vertiasheva. She graduated before him as a pediatric medical doctor before getting a job at a maternity hospital. Soon thereafter, Blinov also found himself working in medicine. In this, his memoir, Blinov recalls the hard work it took for him to succeed, the good times, and the bad—as well as what led him and his family to the United States of America. His honest assessment of life in both the Soviet Union and the United States showcases cultural differences and the positives and negatives of communism and capitalism. If you’re interested in learning more about the former Soviet Union and what life there was really like, this personal narrative offers firsthand accounts of villages, agriculture, the educational system, and everyday life. What’s more, Blinov relives his experiences from his first memory to the present, recounting in great detail each event that shaped him into the man he is today.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - THE characteristic of a revolutionary country is that change is a quicker process there than elsewhere. As the revolution recedes into the past the process of change slackens speed. Russia is no longer the dizzying kaleidoscope that it was in 1917. No longer does it change visibly from week to week as it changed in 19l8. Already, to get a clear vision of the direction in which it is changing, it is necessary to visit it at intervals of six months, and quite useless to tap the political barometer several times a day as once upon a time one used to do. . . . But it is still changing very fast. My jourrnal of "Russia in 1919,"while giving as I believe a fairly accurate pictureof the state of affairs in February and March of 1919, pictures a very different stage in the development of the revolution from that which would be found by observers today. The prolonged state of crisis in which the country has been kept by external war, while strengthening the ruling party by rallying even their enemies to their support, has had the other effects that a national crisis always has on the internal politics of a country. Methods of government which in normal times would no doubt be softened or disguised by ceremonial usage are used nakedly and justified by necessity.

By world standards Canada is a country that respects and protects its human rights. That has not always been the case. ONCE UPON A TIME IN CANADA is not only a romantic ethnic/historical/fictional novel but also one that deals with justice when two young Ukrainian students leave their homeland in 1910 for Canada and while onboard a ship, meet two Irish school teachers. Both couples are on their way to Winnipeg in order to fi nd a better life. During World War 1 the Ukraine Pawlo Byli and Petro Chorny like most East Europeans are classified as 'The Scum of Europe' and along with 8500 other foreigners with the help of xenophobic Anglo Saxons, are incarcerated into 24 Concentration Camps because through no fault of their own, are classified as aliens and enemies of Canada. Th e novel also deals with the personal intrigues and struggles of the new British subjects, By world standards Canada is a country that respects and protects its citizen's human rights. That has not always been the case. This book is dedicated to all my Ukrainian friends who generously helped me with material and advice to reconstruct ONCE UPON A TIME IN CANADA. It is also dedicated to freedom and justice and all the people who understand and affirm freedom and justice.

The three playwrights presented together in this volume On the Road to Ourselves), Elena Gremina (Behind the Mirror) and Olga Mikhailova (Russian Dream). The selected plays contain many elements which will appeal to Western directors and audiences: well-drawn characters, engaging plots, lively wit. Central to the three plays selected in this volume is a complex interaction of Russian and Western value systems, a theme that becomes increasingly relevant for Russian audiences with each passing season and no less relevant for Europeans and Americans.
