This is the first comprehensive study (in any language) of the historical, literary and sociolinguistic foundations of Kurdish nationalism and the conflict with the Iraqi state since its emergence under the British mandate. While it is focused on the Kurds of Iraq, the conflict between the Kurds and the central governments of Turkey, Iran, Syria and the USSR receives adequate research attention. Language is the most important indicator of Kurdish identity. The right to native-tongue education and media has been the most important demand of Kurdish nationalism in the post-WW I period. In their attempt to survive linguistic genocide, Kurdish intellectuals, political activists, and religious leaders struggled for the development of a unified national language. Standardization is treated as language development, similar and closely related to social, economic, and political development. The approach here is interdisciplinary, cutting across a number of fields in social sciences -- sociolinguistics, political science, mass media studies, education, and policy studies.

The Sykes -Picot Agreement map signed in May 1918 by the Imperial powers of Great Britain and France, constituted the blueprint for redrawing the map of the Middle East after the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire in 1918, by the victorious Allies thus dividing the Arab territories as well as Kurdistan into its current form. In this book, the author makes an ambitious attempt to provide a comprehensive new insight into the Kurdish national movement and its struggle against the mandatory power (the British) and the Iraqi government for achievement of national self-determination from 1918 to 1932. The book explores both Kurdish and Arab nationalism within the context of power relations in international politics at the time on the one hand, and in relation to domestic political development in Iraq on the other. More than 70 languages are spoken in contemporary Iran, yet all governmental correspondence and educational textbooks must be written in Farsi. To date, the Iranian mother tongue debate has remained far from the international scholarly exchanges of ideas about multilingual education. This book bridges that gap using interviews with four prominent academic experts in linguistic human rights, mother tongue education and bilingual and multilingual education. The author examines the arguments for rejecting multilingual education in Iran, and the four interviewees counter those arguments with evidence that mother tongue-based education has resulted in positive outcomes for the speakers of non-dominant language groups and the country itself.
