Increasingly, genomic-based approaches and resources are redefining our categorization of disease, leading to new approaches to prevention and therapy. As nurses traditionally practice patient-oriented care, they will undoubtedly play a key role in both developing and applying the aspects of genomic health care. Nursing Care in the Genomic Era: A Case Based Approach is designed to provide nurses with up-to-date and accessible information on this powerful new approach to understanding, preventing, and treating disease. The framework for each chapter consists of core competencies in genetics, interwoven with stories that highlight a particular condition and the related biological, personal, and psychosocial issues. The chapters then go on to address the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for nurses and health professionals as recommended by the National Coalition for Health Professional Education in Genetics (NCHPEG). The text presents the genetic components of common diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer's, and the innovative technologies used to detect them.Understanding genomic issues and how they affect individuals and families is the first step for nurses hoping to make a difference when providing nursing care in the genomic era.

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Duong Van Mai Elliott's The Sacred Willow illuminates recent Vietnamese history by weaving together the stories of the lives of four generations of her family. Beginning with her great-grandfather, who rose from rural poverty to become an influential landowner, and continuing to the present, Mai Elliott traces her family's journey through an era of tumultuous change. She tells us of childhood hours in her grandmother's silk shop, and of hiding while French troops torched her village, watching while blossoms torn by fire from the trees flutter "like hundreds of butterflies" overhead. She makes clear the agonizing choices that split Vietnamese families: her eldest sister left her staunchly anti-communist home to join the Viet Minh, and spent months sleeping in jungle camps with her infant son, fearing air raids by day and tigers by night. And she follows several family members through the last, desperate hours of the fall of Saigon-including one nephew who tried to escape by grabbing the skid of a departing American helicopter. Based on family papers, dozens of interviews, and a wealth of other research, this is not only a memorable family saga but a record of how the Vietnamese themselves have experienced their times.

Eastern Waves, Western Shores is a novel based on the life of a Sri Lankan woman who comes to study in England and then moves back to Sri Lanka and struggles fitting back in. The expectation of the elders, of society in general, cultural norms and the demands on a modern day career woman overwhelm her. She is torn between her loyalty to her family and the dreams she has for herself. It is a book about a looming arranged marriage, the yearning of young woman to fall in love hopefully with someone that is acceptable to her and her family, to live away from the family feuds and land disputes, away from the "dictatorship" of elders vs her duties towards them. Even after following her heart and her dreams she feels tormented sometimes and seeks an equilibrium in America.

East of the Oder

Luise Urban was born in 1933 into a world about to be turned upside down. Her family lived east of the river Oder. Crucially, her family were not Nazi Party members and suffered as a result. As the Third Reich crumbled and the Red Army advanced, she was one of 15 million Germans trapped in a war zone during the terrible winter of 1945. Weakened by starvation and forced to flee their home, it was only the bravery of Luise’s mother that saved the family from total destruction. The Oder–Neisse line (Oder-Neiße-Grenze) is the German-Polish border drawn in the aftermath of the war. The line primarily follows the Oder and Neisse rivers to the Baltic Sea west of the city of Stettin. All pre-war German territory east of the line and within the 1937 German boundaries was discussed at the Potsdam Conference (July-August 1945). Germany was to lose 25% of her territory under the agreement. Crucially, some might say (including most certainly Luise Urban) callously, Stalin, Churchill and Truman also agreed to the expulsion of the German population beyond the new eastern borders. This meant that almost all of the native German population was killed, fled or was driven out by force. In East of the Oder, Luise relives that harrowing time, written in memory of her mother, to whom she owes her life. It is the story of a child, but it is not a story for children.

Avinuo Kire’s is a fresh, young voice from Nagaland, in India’s northeast. In ‘The Power to Forgive’, the title story of this strong collection, Avinuo Kire tells the moving story of a rape survivor who, at the threshold of a new life, looks back on the incident that has shaped nearly two decades of her life and wonders if she made the right choice. Culled from folk and tribal traditions of Naga life, Kire’s stories take us into a world where spirits converse with humans, unsuspecting people are drawn into the movement for Naga independence, a man dies quietly of cancer, a mother wonders if she did the right thing in giving her child a name different from the one she intended… While the long drawn-out conflict and militancy form the backdrop of many of the stories, it is the finely drawn portraits of ordinary people in Naga society that mark this unusual collection. Published by Zubaan.

No time in my life had ever been good within the time I had spent on this earth at the age of ten, except for when I lived with my grandmother in a west African county called Liberia. You see, my parents had me at a young age, and when my mothers father, who is my grandfather, found out that my mom was pregnant with me, he threw her out after finding out that my dad was the one she claimed was the father. My grandfather, being a high-ranking military man, went to my dad and told him to deny the baby and get on with his life, and if my father was to agree to this proposal, my granddad told my father he would not go and report him to my dads oldest brother, whom they called Mr. Spencer and who was also my grandfathers best friend whom my dad lived with. However, he was treated more like a servant than a family member because of Mrs. Spencer was my dads brothers wife.

After eighteen years of working in a nursing home and meeting all kinds of residents from all walks, and staff members with hidden agendas, including criminal activity, I Lydia will share my personal scandals that almost cost me my freedom and my life. This book will also share how chronically ill residents do not receive their proper medication because greedy staff members find it to be more profitable to sell the prescription drugs on the street instead of giving them to the people they were prescribed for. I will also share how promiscuous behaviour is common in the workplace while staff members should be giving care to the residents. This book contains several occurrences that happened during my employment. Although I share a few of the stories and incidents that occurred while employed at the home, there is one story that haunts me to this very day, and that is the story of the Respite.
