Abstract : Purpose of review: The article reviews the recent evidence for mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) for patients with residual depressive symptoms or in remitted patients at increased risk for relapse. Recent findings: Randomized controlled trials have shifted focus from comparing MBCT with treatment-as-usual to comparing MBCT against interventions. These studies have provided evidence for the efficacy of MBCT on par with maintenance antidepressant pharmacotherapy and leading to a relative reduction of risk on the order of 30–40%. Perhaps fuelled by these data, recent efforts have focused on extending MBCT to novel populations, such as acutely depressed patients, those diagnosed with health anxiety, social anxiety, fibromyalgia, or multiple chemical sensitivities as well migrating MBCT to online platforms so that it is more widely available. Neuroimaging studies of patients in structured therapies which feature mindfulness meditation, have reported findings that parallel behavioral changes, such as increased activation in brain regions subsuming self-focus and emotion regulation (prefrontal cortex) and interoceptive awareness (insula). Summary: The current evidence base for MBCT is strongest for its application as a prophylactic intervention or for residual depressive symptoms, with early data suggesting additional indications outside the mood disorders. Future work will need to address dose–effect relationships between mindfulness practice and clinical benefits, as well as establishing the rates of uptake for online MBCT so that its benefits can be compared to in-person groups. Additionally, validating current or novel neural markers of MBCT treatment response will allow for patient matching and optimization of treatment response.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of an 8-week Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) training on anxiety, depression and perceived stress in socially anxious people. Mindfulness-based interventions have already been proven efficient in reducing social anxiety in clinical subjects, reducing stress in healthy subjects and preventing relapse in depression. 58 individuals suffering from social anxiety were selected and randomly assigned to two groups: anexperimental group which would take part in the MBCT training and acontrol group. Both groups were asked to complete questionnaires before and after the training. As already observed in previous studies, a significant reduction in levels of social anxiety, depression and perceived stress were observed before and after the training, whereas there were no such changes in the control group. Although this pilot study was done on a small sample and further research on a larger groups are needed, the present results suggest that MBCT is a promising intervention for socially anxious individuals.

Objectives:The purpose of the current study was to compare the efficacy of a shorter mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (s-MBCT) plus treatment as usual (TAU) to TAU alone for patients with major depressive disorder in a randomized controlled trial.Background:There is evidence that, apart from preventing relapse of depression, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) may reduce symptom severity for patients with a current major depressive episode (MDE). However, dysfunctions related to depression could present a barrier to people engaging in the MBCT program in its full length.Materials and Methods:S-MBCT involved 8 weekly, 1.5-hour group sessions. Major adjustments included shortened mindfulness practices, reduced didactic contents and increased movement practices. Measurements of depression (Beck Depression Inventory, BDI) and level of mindfulness (Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, FFMQ) were completed at baseline and at 8 weeks.Results and Conclusions:Forty-seven patients (women=33, 70%) with a current MDE were included. Participants receiving s-MBCT plus TAU (n=26) did not differ from those with TAU only (n=21) with respect to demographic characteristics, severity of depression and level of mindfulness at baseline. A significant between group differences was found in BDI (F=4.54, p=0.039) and the non-reactivity subscale of FFMQ (F=7.05, p=0.011) at 8 weeks, which indicated specifically that s-MBCT improved depressive symptoms and the facet of non-reactive attitudes in mindfulness. The present findings provide preliminary evidence that a shortened MBCT program may bring meaningful benefits to patients in active depression. With its briefer practices and reduced cognitive demands, s-MBCT may serve as an accessible option for people with more debilitating depressive symptoms.
