Duncan Howarth has been modeling military vehicles for years. But he started to find the range of models offered by the kit manufacturers restricting - there were so many unusual and interesting prototypes that he wanted to model, but couldn't. So he began to use ordinary kits as the bases of increasingly adventurous conversions. With the help of drawings and photographs, parts are made to create new variants of existing models and, sometimes, almost completely new models, using just a few components from a donor kit. This book guides the reader through a series of increasingly complex conversions based on readily available kits of World War Two types, and culminates in a magnificent model of the Vomag self-propelled gun built entirely from scratch. Each build is accompanied by drawings, prototype photographs and photocopyable templates which will allow you to build the conversion yourself. The book also gives you the know-how to undertake new and different conversions of your own.

This double DVD explains the essential techniques needed to build a model military vehicle: how to achieve accurate detail in their construction, along with realistic painting and weathering affects. Emphasizing the importance of research into the real vehicles, Duncan Howarth builds four models, in 1/35th and 1/48th scales. He starts with straightforward plastic kit build, before embarking on an ideal starter conversion. He then completes an intermediate conversion and the simplified build of a resin kit. In the second disc, he explains painting and finishing techniques by completing the M4A1 Sherman. Converting models figures is a fascinating pastime, which can become rather costly if you choose models in metal, or resin. For those of us on a budget, yet still wanting to achieve a more than acceptable result, polythene figures [more usually the province of wargamers] set an interesting challenge. Today, we are blessed indeed that a great diversity of model soldiers, sailors and airmen in all scales, from all of the major combatant nations throughout history, are available from some very notable manufacturers across the world. The book includes detailed step-by-step guides to: Modifying figures - Changing arm and leg positions - Altering uniforms - Adding extra detail - Changing faces - Choosing the right tools for the job - Detailing your figures - Historical accuracy

Cars have always appealed as model subjects as - unlike aeroplanes or military subjects - the real thing is likely to be sitting outside the modeller's house. From the first car kits produced in the early 1950s, mainly dominated by American machinery, we now have a choice of automotive examples from around the world. The joint scale of 1:24/1:25 dominates car models, and it is these scales that will mostly be found in this book, from stock builds to race cars to wild customs. In addition, although injection styrene is the main material of choice, there are specialist builds using resin, white metal and photo-etched parts. The book includes detailed step-by-step guides for Building 'out of the box'; Customs and conversions; Applying decals; Dealing with resin; Wiring and engines; Salvaging old kits; A dented ride for 007; NASA's Hot Road; Dirtying a dirt track racer; An alien homage to Roth.
