Everything you need to know about the cultural contexts of 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream'. Is this just a light-hearted romp or is Shakespeare trying to make serious points about courtship, love, marriage and human folly? This book provides detailed in-depth discussion of the various influences that an Elizabethan audience would have brought to interpreting the play. How did people think about the world, about God, about sin, about kings, about civilized conduct, about the magic and madness of love and attraction? Historical, literary, political, sociological backgrounds are explained within the biblical-moral matrices by which the play would have been judged. This book links real life in the late 1590s to the world on the stage. Discover the orthodox beliefs people held about religion. Meet the Devil, Sin and Death. Learn about the social hierarchy, gender relationships, court corruption, class tensions, the literary profile of the time, attitudes to comedy – and all the subversions, transgressions, and oppositions that made the play a hilarious farce but also an unsettling picture of a world so close to disaster.

Shakespeare's intertwined love polygons begin to get complicated from the start--Demetrius and Ly sander both want Hermia but she only has eyes for Ly sander. Bad news is, Hermia's father wants Demetrius for a son-in-law. On the outside is Helena, whose returnee love burns hot for Demetrius. Hermia and Ly sander plan to flee from the city under cover of darkness but are pursued by an enraged Demetrius (who is himself pursued by an enraptured Helena). In the forest, unbeknownst to the mortals, Oberon and Titania (King and Queen of the faeries) are having a spat over a servant boy. The plot twists up when Oberon's head mischief-maker, Puck, runs loose with a flower which causes people to fall in love with the first thing they see upon waking. Throw in a group of laborers preparing a play for the Duke's wedding (one of whom is given a donkey's head and Titania for a lover by Puck) and the complications become fantastically funny.

This cutting focuses on three ridiculously funny and vibrant scenes from A MIDSUMMER NIGHT's DREAM. The first scene starts with Puck mistakenly anointing the eyes of the wrong lovers with love potion, leading to a madcap chase scene between Helena, Lysander, Hermia, and Demetrius. Scene two features Bottom's magical transformation to an ass, always an audience favorite. The final scene is the classic play within a play, where the Rude Mechanicals act out with tragical mirth the story of Pyramus and Thisbe, with specific comic suggestions for the characters, including Lion chasing Thisbe into the audience!

Rap-Notes: Shakespeare's Greatest Hits Volume 1 is a short summary of five of the greatest plays ever written (at least according to my favorite high school English teacher): Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, and Midsummer Night's Dream. But these are highly unusual summaries they're raps. They all rhyme, and they're meant to be read with a funky beat. Some people like downloading the MP3s of the raps so they can read and rap along. And some people just want to make up their own beats in their head without help. Either way, this book is a great introduction to anyone who's ever been a teensy, little bit scared around Shakespeare's language. I hope this book will let you get to the heart of these classic stories and into the minds and hearts of their characters. And I hope you learn to love the Bard as much as I do and see that Shakespeare wasn't just a mega-genius he was cool!
