We have all had experiences with sickness, care giving, physicians, medical emergencies, hospitals, and doctors' offices. Health concerns are not solely the domain of medical students, physicians, or nurses - we all deal with our personal well-being and the health of our loved ones on a daily basis. Sometimes these health problems cause us to consider larger social and ethical issues. How do we respond and relate to such matters? In order to help both lay people and medical professionals consider various health care issues, East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine developed a medical readers' theatre programme. Compiled for the first time in a single text, this book provides a vehicle for those who wish to engage in discussions among citizens and professionals about important, topical issues in contemporary medicine.

Most medical schools in the US, Canada and UK now incorporate some form of arts and humanities-based teaching into their curricula. What happens in residency is another story. Most postgraduate programs do not continue the thread of such teaching although many residents would like to deepen their understanding of the medical humanities before they move into practice. The humanities emphasize "the human side of medicine," and can provide a counterpoint to the reductionism of evidence-based medicine and technological hubris for young doctors as they apply new knowledge and skills in ambiguous, real-life encounters with patients who are living with complicated health problems. Humanities-based education can help both sides of the relationship: programs are shown to reduce burnout and mental health issues in young physicians, and can also help learning practitioners grapple with the most difficult aspects of their craft: how does one persuade patients on a course of treatment, while respecting informed consent? How does one work with families? How does one listen to and treat patients exhibiting self-harm tendencies? Available research may demonstrate the efficacy of such exposures, but provide little practical advice or resources for setting up programs across specialty and sub-specialty disciplines. Health Humanities in Post-Graduate Medical Education will fill this gap in knowledge translation for the thousands of residency programs worldwide, allowing educators, supervisors, and residents themselves to create robust and educationally sound workshops, seminars, study groups, lecture series, research and arts-based projects, publications and events.

This book describes the many uses and benefits of readers theatre. Readers Theatre is a cooperative or shared reading of a poem, story or lyrics of a favourite song. Two or more readers can take part. Even if a piece is scripted for only two readers, and you want more than two readers to participate, assign parts to a duet or chorus. And there are times when you will want to give a part to a weaker and stronger reader for practice, so that one reader supports the other till both feel comfortable enough to read independently. Simple as that.

This classic, one-volume reference work now indexes more than 35 journals, both popular and scholarly, representing the rich culture and current history of African Americans. Among the topics treated in each edition of the annual Index are gender issues, literature, education, business, discrimination, health care and the arts. Interviews, obituaries and book and drama reviews are also included. The Index is international in scope, including African countries and regions, but its emphasis is on the extraordinary diversity of the African American experience. Authors, subjects and numerous cross-references are combined in a single, convenient alphabetical arrangement. The Index formerly appeared under the titles "Index to Periodical Articles By and About Blacks, Index to Periodical Articles By and About Negroes" and "Index to Selected Periodicals By and About Negroes." G.K. Hall published a ten-year cumulation of the "Index" covering the years 1950-1959 and began publishing the "Index" on an annual basis in 1961. The volumes from 1961 forward were published in conjunction with The Hallie Q. Brown Memorial Library at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio; The New York Public Library's Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature and History also participated during the years 1960-1970. In mid-1984, G.K. Hall assumed editorial responsibility for the "Index. " Periodicals indexed include: "About Time African American Pulpit, The African American Review Afro-Americans in New York Life and History American Legacy American Visions Black Enterprise Black Issues in Higher Education Black Renaissance/Renaissance Noir Black Scholar Callaloo CLA Journal V Crisis Ebony Emerge Equity and Excellence in Education Heart & Soul Howard Journal of Communications International Review of African-American Jet Journal of Black Psychology, The Journal of Black Studies Journal of Blacks in Higher Education Journal of Negro Education MultiCultural Review Muslim Journal National Black Law Journal Obsidian III Public Culture Race and Class Research in African Literatures Review of Black Political Economy Transition Upscale Vital Issues Western Journal of Black Studies, The"
