Mayday! Mayday! Aircraft Crashes in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 1920-2000 Jeff Wadley and Dwight McCarter Since the dawn of aviation, more than fifty aircraft have crashed in the Great Smoky Mountains. This book details all of those known incidents from 1920 to 2000, including those that occurred within the area before the establishment of the National Park in 1934. Jeff Wadley and Dwight McCarter, who have been involved in search-and-rescue missions in the Smokies for decades, have researched official documents and newspaper archives and conducted extensive interviews with survivors, family members, and eyewitnesses to record not only tragedies but also triumphs of survival. The authors tell how the earliest known plane crashes in the Smokies were of the single-engine Curtis "Jenny" biplanes flown by young air aces during the World War I era. In the years since, the Smokies have claimed private planes, military jets, helicopters, and even a hot air balloon. These disasters arose from numerous causes--from fuel depletion and icing to "dare-deviling" or simply flying too low. Wadley and McCarter attest to the difficult duties of search-and-rescue teams in the most remote areas of the park. Of 127 persons involved in crashes, only 56 survived. Readers will be touched by these accounts--such as that of two small children who survived a December 1977 crash that killed their father and older sister. Mayday! Mayday! offers both cautionary tales for pilots who fly above these ridges and seasoned advice to those who search for victims. The Smokies have been called by some another Bermuda Triangle; this book explains why and reminds us that no skies are entirely friendly. The Authors: Jeff Wadley is a lieutenant colonel in the Tennessee Civil Air Patrol who serves as a mission coordinator and trainer in the Smokies. Dwight McCarter served as a backcountry ranger in the park for over twenty years and is the author of Lost! A Ranger's Journal of Search and Rescue in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Lowell Green presents a powerful, persuasive, well-documented and incredibly well researched argument for a substantial reduction in Canada's yearly intake of immigrants and refugees, and an immediate halt to multiculturalism. Lowell minces no words in demonstrating how immigration has changed from the early 1990s - when about four European immigrants arrived here for every non-European - until today, when it is exactly the opposite. He explains how the policies of the Mulroney and Chretien governments opened the immigration floodgates in the 1990s. And how, since then, immigration isn't working for Canada or for the immigrants, many of whom are still on welfare after many years in this country. The evidence that Lowell presents that multiculturalism has become a form of colonization in our major cities, severely straining our social services and infrastructures, is highly controversial but difficult to refute. So, too, his assertion that even as mass immigration and multiculturalism strengthen Quebec's distinct and French language and culture, the rest of Canada is committing cultural suicide. His claim that many of the cultures we are importing are repositories of ignorance, superstition, repression, cruelty and injustice, especially towards women, will infuriate many a bleeding heart!

An Historic and Spectacular Photographic Journey through the ruins of World Trade Center on 9-11-01! Exclusive, some never seen before, photos taken at the World Trade Center Disaster. Steve Spak arrived at the World trade center 10 minutes after the Collapses. Certainly this book will be a collector´s item for the fire service because it is an intimate, personal chronicle of the events of 9/11. More importantly, though, it is a history book thats records and preserves the events through his eyes. Steve was there-he tasted, felt, heard, breathed and witnessed the destruction of that day. Now, you can, too-through his photos. Like so many of us, Steve knew many of the Firefighters who perished on that day. Like all of us, he mourns their loss. This is his tribute to those men. Review by FDNY Battalion Chief John A. Calderone In the time period immediately following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, numerous books on this subject were being knocked out on a regular basis. Their content and quality were spread over a wide range. Most of those books had their run and are no longer available. There is no doubt that the attack on the World Trade Center was probably one of the most photographed events in history. This brings us to the latest book on the topic: MAYDAY! MAYDAY! MAYDAY! The Day the Towers Fell. This book is different in that it is a collection of color photographs taken by well-known fire photographer Steve Spak. Few photographers have been able to capture the events of that day from a firefighter´s perspective. Steve has accomplished this. Arriving minutes after the second tower fell, Steve shadowed operating units and documented firefighting and rescue operations immediately following the collapses. These are powerful, close-up images that few people, other than firefighters operating at the scene, experienced. He has recorded history in his photographs. This book is available in either soft or hardcover versions and is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in FDNY or in the events of that horrific day. Ordering information is available at Review by FDNY Honorary Chief of Department Jack Lerch "Steve's Photographic expertise and his detailed knowledge of the New York City Fire Department helps him deliver one of the only 9-11-01 photo books that really show what is was like to be a firefighter on 9-11-01. It shows, from a firefighter's standpoint, what we faced in the aftermath of the terrorist attack and how we regrouped and performed under horrific conditions. This book is a testament to our heroism and sacrifice that we as firefighters and Americans made on 9-11-01". Jack Lerch, Honorary Chief of the FDNY. INDEPENDANT PUBLISHER HIGHLIGHTED TITLE! In one of the most remote parts of the Pacific Ocean a small dot floated nearly invisible in the moonless black night. As dawn approached, tropical squalls further obscured this dot, now barely visible even a few feet away. No one was there to see that this dot was a man's head bobbing just above the surface of the inky black water of the desolate Central Pacific. Adrift for hours, he had been working on the problem of how to survive. No life raft, no water, no food, no supplies, in fact, not even the wreckage of the Haleakala remained in the empty sea around him. Any hope of rescue depended on his experience, intelligence, & most importantly, his innate spirit. Although he knew this was most likely his last dawn, Charley had never recognized the word "IMPOSSIBLE." Shipwrecked & adrift, he accepted the challenge to survive as the greatest & most crucial test of his life. What he did & what others did to make ultimate rescue possible against all odds is this enthralling story of survival. Credit card orders call (800) 247-6553.
