Mayday! Mayday! Aircraft Crashes in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, 1920-2000 Jeff Wadley and Dwight McCarter Since the dawn of aviation, more than fifty aircraft have crashed in the Great Smoky Mountains. This book details all of those known incidents from 1920 to 2000, including those that occurred within the area before the establishment of the National Park in 1934. Jeff Wadley and Dwight McCarter, who have been involved in search-and-rescue missions in the Smokies for decades, have researched official documents and newspaper archives and conducted extensive interviews with survivors, family members, and eyewitnesses to record not only tragedies but also triumphs of survival. The authors tell how the earliest known plane crashes in the Smokies were of the single-engine Curtis "Jenny" biplanes flown by young air aces during the World War I era. In the years since, the Smokies have claimed private planes, military jets, helicopters, and even a hot air balloon. These disasters arose from numerous causes--from fuel depletion and icing to "dare-deviling" or simply flying too low. Wadley and McCarter attest to the difficult duties of search-and-rescue teams in the most remote areas of the park. Of 127 persons involved in crashes, only 56 survived. Readers will be touched by these accounts--such as that of two small children who survived a December 1977 crash that killed their father and older sister. Mayday! Mayday! offers both cautionary tales for pilots who fly above these ridges and seasoned advice to those who search for victims. The Smokies have been called by some another Bermuda Triangle; this book explains why and reminds us that no skies are entirely friendly. The Authors: Jeff Wadley is a lieutenant colonel in the Tennessee Civil Air Patrol who serves as a mission coordinator and trainer in the Smokies. Dwight McCarter served as a backcountry ranger in the park for over twenty years and is the author of Lost! A Ranger's Journal of Search and Rescue in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Lowell Green presents a powerful, persuasive, well-documented and incredibly well researched argument for a substantial reduction in Canada's yearly intake of immigrants and refugees, and an immediate halt to multiculturalism. Lowell minces no words in demonstrating how immigration has changed from the early 1990s - when about four European immigrants arrived here for every non-European - until today, when it is exactly the opposite. He explains how the policies of the Mulroney and Chretien governments opened the immigration floodgates in the 1990s. And how, since then, immigration isn't working for Canada or for the immigrants, many of whom are still on welfare after many years in this country. The evidence that Lowell presents that multiculturalism has become a form of colonization in our major cities, severely straining our social services and infrastructures, is highly controversial but difficult to refute. So, too, his assertion that even as mass immigration and multiculturalism strengthen Quebec's distinct and French language and culture, the rest of Canada is committing cultural suicide. His claim that many of the cultures we are importing are repositories of ignorance, superstition, repression, cruelty and injustice, especially towards women, will infuriate many a bleeding heart!

A pitch black night in a winter Atlantic storm. A stricken trawler, her cold and frightened crew struggling to keep her afloat a little longer, knowing that before long she will go down. For these men, it is certain death: a death that has been the lot of generations of fishermen before them. Then out of the night comes the drone of helicopter blades and the searching eye of the spotlight. On board, the helicopter crew prepares to rescue the beleaguered fishermen. This requires immense skill and vast reservoirs of raw, physical courage. It means being lowered on a winch from the safety of the helicopter into the teeth of a Force 11 gale and sheets of blinding rain in order to manoeuvre towards the deck of the sinking boat. And it has to be done as many times as there are men to save. The people who do this work are not cut from an average cloth. This book recalls and celebrates twelve cases where their courage, resourcefulness and persistence saved human lives that would otherwise have certainly been lost. The helicopter crews are not daredevils, indifferent to danger. On the contrary, they are consummate professionals, calculating the odds, facing the dangers and calmly getting th

Like a growing tidal wave, the escaping air was gathering momentum. A teenaged girl in aisle 18, seat D, near the port-side aisle, her seat dislocated by the original impact, suddenly found herself gripping her seat track on the floor, her overturned seat still strapped to her body. The seatbelt failed and the seat shot down the aisle. She lost her grip and was dragged after it. Her eyes were filled with horror as she dug her nails into the carpet, as the racing air pulled her toward the yawning hole that led outside. Her cries were unheard by even those passengers who sat barely inches away from her struggle. The noise of the escaping air was so loud that it was no longer decipherable as sound, but seemed instead a solid thing pounding at the people in their seats . . .
