In The Unemployed Man and His Family, noted sociologist and feminist Mirra Komarovsky poses the question: what happens to the authority of the male head of the family when he fails as a provider? Between 1935 and 1936, Komarovsky interviewed 59 families in 1935-36 in which the male had been unemployed for at least a year. Interestingly, in many cases, the husband's struggle in the economic sphere did not offset the solidity and happiness of the marital relationship. But unemployment seems to have affected the men's sense of their own position as head of household and providers. For one thing, it undermined their sense of themselves as breadwinners. Most found it unbearably humiliating to accept relief. Perhaps her most important finding_which still resonates today_was that those men who thought of themselves exclusively as providers suffered far more than those who had developed alternative identities as father and husband.

The Family of Man is the most widely seen exhibition in the history of photography. The book of the exhibition, still in print, is also the most commercially successful photobook ever published. First shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1955, the exhibition traveled throughout the United States and to 46 countries, and was seen by more than nine million people. Edward Steichen conceived, curated, and designed the exhibition. He explained its subject as "the everydayness of life" and "the essential oneness of mankind throughout the world." The exhibition was a statement against war and the conflicts and divisions that threatened a common future for humanity after 1945. The popular international response was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Many critics, however, have dismissed the exhibition as a form of sentimental humanism unable to address the challenges of history, politics, and cultural difference. The Family of Man: Photography in a Global Age revises the critical debate about The Family of Man, challenging in particular the legacy of Roland Barthes's influential account of the exhibition. The expert contributors explore new contexts for understanding Steichen's work and they undertake radically new analyses of the formal dynamics of the exhibition. Also presented are documents about the exhibition never before available in English. Commentaries by critical theorist Max Horkheimer and novelist Wolfgang Koeppen, a letter from photographer August Sander, and a poetic sequence on the images by Polish poet Witold Wirpsza enable and encourage new critical reflections. A detailed survey of audience responses in Munich from 1955 allows a rare glimpse of what visitors thought about the exhibition. Today, when armed conflict, environmental catastrophe, and economic inequality continue to threaten our future, it is timely to revisit The Family of Man.

A self-help manual written by a healed domestic violence offender for batterers, child abusers, and bullies. A.W. Burgess is a nonjudgmental change agent charged to lovingly help and partner with these violent individuals and those whom they have abused to permanently heal them so others will not become victims or victimizers. Family Man is about the systemic making, breaking, and restoration of a domestic violence offender while addressing the impact of child abuse; unhealthy environments children are exposed to that consequentially harm innocent individuals; perpetual cycles of violence and abuse; and the destruction of legacies and the community they reside. The book does not call offenders out, but instead lovingly calls them in to receive behavioral and mental health solutions that will lead to living a more fulfilled life, while reducing recidivism and divorce. Burgess is the follow-up to the #Me Too and Time's Up movement providing solutions to proactively keep abusers fully accountable and aware of their behavior! Burgess requires violent individuals to submit to their ignorance because what they don't know will hurt others and themselves! Victimizers are in our homes, churches, schools, workplace, hotels, elevators, music concerts, movie theaters, yoga spas, bars, clubs, military bases, etc. Abusers must take control with an aggressive step forward towards a solution or their problems will be stuck in neutral going nowhere, or worse, will be taking many steps in reverse, leading to more significant losses, pain, and more traumatic experiences for ALL mankind! He regrets taking too long to get help for his violent behavior and letting someone know family members were harming him as a child. Ignorance, secrets and silence led to his violence towards others and himself. He paid the price for a crime he never committed as a child and ultimately ended up reciprocating that violence to innocent family members and friends. He's spending the rest of his life trying to save lives and legacies of victims and victimizers! Burgess hopes and prays that this book becomes a powerful resource that frees any individual struggling with the pain of domestic violence, child abuse, & bullying.

What does it take to be a “real” man? You don’t have to be perfect to be a man of God. As Dr. Charles Stanley writes, a man of God is a maturing man, a striving man, a knowledgeable man. And the first step in real manhood is spiritual rebirth. In Man of God, Dr. Stanley asks and answers questions such as these: What can we learn about manhood from Jesus’s example? How does a true leader allow God to lead him?Why is a godly man “both velvet and steel”?What does it look like to be a provider? What does it mean to lead with sensitivity? Man of God will challenge and equip you to become a better leader, teacher, father, and husband. What makes a man? The answer starts here. Includes study guide for individuals or groups.

"What this country needs is a few good men-husbands and fathers who are willing to love and lead their households with manly resolve and godly vision. Frankly, the Church needs these men every bit as much as the rest of the country. For more than ten years, Philip Lancaster has been instilling hope, and calling fathers to their rightful duties as family prophets, priests, protectors, and providers. Through his magazine Patriarch, Phil has reached thousands with both the vision and the tools necessary for family revival. Now, in his first book, Phil lays-in simple, easy-to-understand concepts-the biblical foundation necessary for men to turn their hearts to home and change the world. Soundly reasoned and biblically supported, Family Man, Family Leader is appropriate for any man, old or young."

A hysterical phone call from Henry Archer’s ex-wife and a familiar face in a photograph upend his well-ordered life and bring him back into contact with the child he adored, a short-term stepdaughter from a misbegotten marriage long ago. Henry is a lawyer, an old-fashioned man, gay, successful, lonely. Thalia is now twenty-nine, an actress-hopeful, estranged from her newly widowed eccentric mother—Denise, Henry’s ex. Hoping it will lead to better things for her career, Thalia agrees to pose as the girlfriend of a horror-movie luminary who is down on his romantic luck. When Thalia and her complicated social life move into the basement of Henry’s Upper West Side townhouse, she finds a champion in her long-lost father, and he finds new life—and maybe even new love—in the commotion.

Cover: The only flag that counted in the life of my father Patrick John Dunleavy was the American flag with its forty eight stars. The flag with the harp is not the British one under which my father may have grown up. Rather it is a flag design used at different times to express Irish nationalism. It was created in the United States by a group of Irish volunteers who joined the Mexican side in the U.S.-Mexican war from 1846 to 1848 as the Los San Patricios or Saint Patricks Battalion. The motto Erin Go Bragh underneath the harp means Ireland Forever. The current Irish tricolor flag was flown in the Easter Rising in 1916 and officially adopted in 1919 by the Republic during its War of Independence. Photographed by Niall Mackey, the flags are a framed gift from Nora Geraghty, purchased during a Harris Auction sale in Delgany, County Wicklow, Ireland, in the 1960s. Nora thought it belonged in my home nearby, Carriglea, in Greystones, County Wicklow, Ireland.
