WHY IS COOPERS CROSSING GROWING SO FAST? JACK VAN CAMP, charming mayor of the booming Indiana town, isn’t telling where all his new townsfolk are coming from. He likes to think of it as his little secret. BUT WHEN attractive visitor Mrs. Zimmer expresses an interest in settling there, he reveals some of the town’s stranger aspects in a day-long tour. A tour complete with “tales“ of twelve of its more interesting “citizens.“ Quite strange tales, in fact. They might even be true. ONLY AT THE END of the tour, as night falls, does he discover that quiet, demure Dilly Zimmer has her own tale to tell, her own little secret. A secret involving a missing childhood . . . A deathbed whisper . . . And a very peculiar old typewriter. NOW MRS. ZIMMER has come to Coopers Crossing to set things right. One keystroke at a time. Fourteen more tales from just beyond the edge of the ordinary. Check out the author’s books at danielcrossbooks.com. Write to him at [email protected] Cover design by Leah Diekhoff. Agency and Imagination in the Films of David Lynch

Agency and Imagination in the Films of David Lynch: Philosophical Perspectives offers a sustained philosophical interpretation of the filmmaker’s work in light of classic and contemporary discussions of human agency and the complex relations between our capacity to act and our ability to imagine. With the help of the pathological characters that so often leave their unforgettable mark on Lynch’s films, this book reveals several important ways in which human beings fail to achieve fuller embodiments of agency or seek substitute satisfactions in spaces of fantasy. In keeping with Lynch’s penchant for unconventional narrative techniques, James D. Reid and Candace R. Craig explore the possibility, scope, and limits of the very idea of agency itself and what it might be like to renounce concepts of agency altogether in the interpretation and depiction of human life. In a series of interlocking readings of eight feature-length films and Twin Peaks: The Return that combine suggestive philosophical analysis with close attention to cinematic detail, Reid and Craig make a convincing case for the importance of David Lynch’s work in the philosophical examination of agency, the vagaries of the human imagination, and the relevance of film for the philosophy of human action. Scholars of film studies and philosophy will find this book particularly useful.

The Globalization of Musics in Transit

This book traces the particularities of music migration and tourism in different global settings, and provides current, even new perspectives for ethnomusicological research on globalizing musics in transit. The dual focus on tourism and migration is central to debates on globalization, and their examination—separately or combined—offers a useful lens on many key questions about where globalization is taking us: questions about identity and heritage, commoditization, historical and cultural representation, hybridity, authenticity and ownership, neoliberalism, inequality, diasporization, the relocation of allegiances, and more. Moreover, for the first time, these two key phenomena—tourism and migration—are studied conjointly, as well as interdisciplinary, in order to derive both parallels and contrasts. While taking diverse perspectives in embracing the contemporary musical landscape, the collection offers a range of research methods and theoretical approaches from ethnomusicology, anthropology, cultural geography, sociology, popular music studies, and media and communication. In so doing, Musics in Transit provides a rich exemplification of the ways that all forms of musical culture are becoming transnational under post-global conditions, sustained by both global markets and musics in transit, and to which both tourists and diasporic cosmopolitans make an important contribution.

Chagrin Falls Park, Ohio, this bucollic town set in the rustic fields of Northestern Ohio continue to represent the dreams and aspirations of a group of African American pioneers who fought not only the harships and vissitudes of this rural existence, but had to at the same time fight racism and prejudice that kept them separated and to a great extent isolated from the lives of those folks that lived all around and consipred to keep them down and when possible retake control of the one hundred and ten acre parcel of land. Valiantly, and with the organizational genius of their forefathers and mothers, they built a community, a village a town that could attest to their drive, determination and courage. Charin Falls Park, Ohio is about thrity miles outside of Cleveland, Ohio in Geauga County, although it was gerrymandered away from Cuyahoga County, which has a large African American community and annexed by Geauga County, which meant no representation for the residents of Chagrin Falls Park. It remains that way to this day. This book was written to begin to draw attention to the plight of these individuals and this community. The objective here is to assist the residents in obtaining designation for this community as a historic black town. To provide protection for the history of this town, and more importantly to provide direction for the maintenance of this town continuation of this community through economic assistance programs.

The virtual renaissance of all things Cajun and Creole has captivated enthusiasts throughout America and invigorated the culture back home. Who, just fifteen years ago, could have predicted that this regional music would become so astonishingly popular throughout the nation and the world? This new edition of a book first published in 1984 celebrates the music makers in the generation most responsible for the survival of Cajun music and zydeco and showcases many of the young performers who have emerged since them to give the music new spark. More than 100 color photographs, show them in their homes, on their front porches, and in their fields, as well as in performance at local clubs and dance halls and on festival stages. In interviews they speak directly about their lives, their music, and the vital tradition from which their rollicking music springs. Many of the legendary performers featured here--Dewey Balfa, Clifton Chenier, Nathan Abshire, Dennis McGee, Canray Fontenot, Varise Connor, Octa Clark, Lula Landry, and Inez Catalon--are no longer alive. Others from the early days continue to perform--Bois-sec Ardoin, Michael Doucet, D. L. Menard, and Zachary Richard. Their grandeur, humor, and humility are precisely the qualities this book captures. Featured too are young musicians who are taking their place in the dance halls, on festival stages, and on the folk music circuit. Cajun and Creole music makers, both young and old, still play in the old ways, but as young musicians--such as Geno Delafose and the French Rockin' Boogie, and Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys-- experiment and enrich the tradition with new sounds of rock, country, rap, and funk, the music evolves and enlivens a whole new audience. Barry Jean Ancelet, a native French-speaking Cajun, is chair of the Department of Modern Languages and director of the Center for Acadian and Creole Folklore at the University of Southwestern Louisiana. Among his many books are Cajun Country and Cajun and Creole Folk Tales (both from the University Press of Mississippi). Elemore Morgan, Jr., is an artist and retired professor of visual art at University of Southwestern Louisiana.

Association of Recorded Sound Collections Awards for Excellence Best Research in Recorded Jazz Music–Best History (tie) (2011) Wilbur C. Sweatman (1882-1961) is one of the most important, yet unheralded, African American musicians involved in the transition of ragtime into jazz in the early twentieth century. In That's Got 'Em!, Mark Berresford tracks this energetic pioneer over a seven-decade career. His talent transformed every genre of black music before the advent of rock and roll—“pickaninny” bands, minstrelsy, circus sideshows, vaudeville (both black and white), night clubs, and cabarets. Sweatman was the first African American musician to be offered a long-term recording contract, and he dazzled listeners with jazz clarinet solos before the Original Dixieland Jazz Band's so-called “first jazz records.” Sweatman toured the vaudeville circuit for over twenty years and presented African American music to white music lovers without resorting to the hitherto obligatory “plantation” costumes and blackface makeup. His bands were a fertile breeding ground of young jazz talent, featuring such future stars as Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins, and Jimmie Lunceford. Sweatman subsequently played pioneering roles in radio and recording production. His high profile and sterling reputation in both the black and white entertainment communities made him a natural choice for administering the estate of Scott Joplin and other notable black performers and composers. That's Got 'Em! is the first full-length biography of this pivotal figure in black popular culture, providing a compelling account of his life and times.

'Does a fantastic job tracing the development of Dury's career. It also shows how Ian's life shaped his uniquely individualistic style.' Peter Hook (former Joy Division and New Order bassist), Daily Mirror. Widely described as 'punk's poet laureate', Ian Dury is a cultural icon. With his band The Blockheads, he exploded onto the television screen in 1978, appearing on Top of the Pops with his hit single 'What a Waste', followed later that year by 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick'. By now Ian was thirty-six and had worked hard for many years to reach this moment, struggling all the while to find acceptance in spite of the disability he suffered as a result of childhood polio. And yet fame, when it came, almost destroyed him. This groundbreaking and authoritative book gives the first in-depth and compelling account of the life of this charismatic yet complex artist. Author Will Birch interviewed Dury several times during his lifetime, and has also spoken to more than sixty people who were extremely close to Ian, including family members, fellow musicians, friends, lovers and business associates.

Obviously, reasonable people want to enjoy robust lives, free from the ravages of aging and aging-related diseases. The question is how to secure that admirable goal. Numerous books address preserving health but none is comprehensive and approaches successful aging from a scientific evidence-based methodology. Invariably, piecemeal attempts describe aspects of attaining health from fitness, emotional aspects, or, most commonly diet and they offer authoritative opinions. This effort’s resolve is to provide the reader with a primer that includes principles necessary for living a better life. We’re all familiar with the idea that all things happen for a reason. Amazingly, we generally apply that wisdom to everything in our lives, except our bodies, and yet we should. If we concentrate on the reasons certain behaviors are beneficial or harmful, we can better address our health issues. With scientific evidence-based facts, people can design their best life-style approach. Readers are not automatons expected to follow a specific program; instead, they will learn to understand the underpinnings of aging and then they will better understand how to age successfully.

Dominas Arabelle and Druscilla Ravyn’s talented apprentice, Cinderella, wants to become a Mistress, but the cruel stepsisters thwart her at every turn. When famous rock star Kink-Bottom Prince is seeking a new Mistress from all those in the City, poor Cinderella doesn’t think she stands a chance. But a kind Fairy Kink Mother magically appears to help Cinderella win her Prince’s collar — and heart. This 21,000+ word erotic novella contains material meant for adults only! All characters are 18+. EXCERPT: “Some Fairy Kink Mothers might let you go just like that, because admittedly you are magnificent as you are. But I didn’t win the prestigious honor of Fairy Kink Mother of the Year six years running from doing only the bare minimum… if you’ll pardon the pun!” She laughed at her own witticism, but Cinderella was too overwhelmed to say a word. “Oh, my stars, I nearly forgot the most important part!” Again she reached into the ridiculously tiny bag and started to pull out golden straps attached to something. As with the other things, it seemed to start out doll-sized, and then grew to full size bit by bit as she pulled it out. The strangeness of this magic almost made Cinderella dizzy to behold. Now she saw that it was a strap-on harness, with an amazingly life-like member complete with smooth balls attached. It all gleamed as golden as Cinderella’s skin did now, who accepted the Fairy’s proffered arm as she helped the girl step into the harness. It seemed to tighten by itself to fit Cinderella perfectly, and Fairy Kink Mother beamed with excitement. “This isn’t any ordinary strap-on, my dear. Oh, no, no! This is so very special, and if I do say so myself, it may just be my most brilliant creation to date!” She caressed the shaft with one hand, and Cinderella had to bite back a moan of pleasure. She was shocked to realize that it felt as natural and as much a true part of her as if it were her own from birth! Just that one simple stroke from Kink Mother’s hand had been deliciously intriguing. “Ah, thus, now you see… when it is worn by you — and only you, I might add, as the magic is limited to one client — it will feel and react as if it were your own natural member. Because, you see, with the magic, it truly is!” Fairy Kink Mother chortled with delight, clapping her hands like a little girl. “It’s a brilliant creation, isn’t it? Go on, touch it, see for yourself!”
