One of the most distinctive voices in mainstream comics since the 1970s, Howard Chaykin (b. 1950) has earned a reputation as a visionary formal innovator and a compelling storyteller whose comics offer both pulp-adventure thrills and thoughtful engagement with real-world politics and culture. His body of work is defined by the belief that comics can be a vehicle for sophisticated adult entertainment and for narratives that utilize the medium’s unique properties to explore serious themes with intelligence and wit. Beginning with early interviews in fanzines and concluding with a new interview conducted in 2010 with the volume’s editor, Howard Chaykin: Conversations collects widely ranging discussions from Chaykin’s earliest days as an assistant for such legends as Gil Kane and Wallace Wood to his recent work on titles including Dominic Fortune, Challengers of the Unknown, and American Century. The book includes 35 line illustrations selected from Chaykin, as well. As a writer/artist for outlets such as DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and Heavy Metal, he has participated in and influenced many of the major developments in mainstream comics over the past four decades. He was an early pioneer in the graphic novel format in the 1970s, and his groundbreaking sci-fi satire American Flagg! was an essential contribution to the maturation of the comic book as a vehicle for social commentary in the 1980s.

This definitive, unauthorized study of Christopher Nolan's landmark 2005 film demonstrates how BATMAN BEGINS adapted and fused a half century of comic books into a single, unified movie. This book also examines past attempts to film Batman's origins, how those origins evolved over time, and where Nolan's realism falls on a spectrum with past Batman movies and even the 1960s TV show. Dr. Julian Darius manages to reveal secrets to even the most hardcore Batman fan, while remaining fully accessible to those new to the character. From Sequart Research & Literacy Organization. The Caped Crusade

The Caped Crusade is a fascinating, critically acclaimed chronicle of the rises and falls of one of the world's most iconic superheroes and the fans who love him--now with a new afterword. For nearly a century, Batman has cycled through eras of dark melodrama and light comedy and back again. How we perceive his character, whether he's delivering dire threats in a raspy Christian Bale growl or trading blithely homoerotic double entendres with Robin the Boy Wonder, speaks to who we are and how we wish to be seen by the world. It's this endless adaptability that has made him so lasting, and ultimately human. But it's also Batman's fundamental nerdiness that uniquely resonates with his fans and makes them fiercely protective of him. As Weldon charts the evolution of Gotham's Guardian from Bob Kane and Bill Finger's hyphenated hero to Christopher Nolan's post-9/11 Dark Knight, he reveals how this symbol of justice has made us who we are today and why his legacy remains so strong. Well-researched, insightful, and engaging, The Caped Crusade, with a new afterword by the author, has something for everyone.
