This book considers the so-called Unlikely Intersections, a topic that embraces well-known issues, such as Lang's and Manin-Mumford's, concerning torsion points in subvarieties of tori or abelian varieties. More generally, the book considers algebraic subgroups that meet a given subvariety in a set of unlikely dimension. The book is an expansion of the Hermann Weyl Lectures delivered by Umberto Zannier at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in May 2010. The book consists of four chapters and seven brief appendixes, the last six by David Masser. The first chapter considers multiplicative algebraic groups, presenting proofs of several developments, ranging from the origins to recent results, and discussing many applications and relations with other contexts. The second chapter considers an analogue in arithmetic and several applications of this. The third chapter introduces a new method for approaching some of these questions, and presents a detailed application of this (by Masser and the author) to a relative case of the Manin-Mumford issue. The fourth chapter focuses on the André-Oort conjecture (outlining work by Pila).

These 17 essays from the seventh annual J. Lloyd Eaton Conference examine the relationship between fantasy and science fiction. They propose that fantasy and science fiction are not isolated commercial literary forms, but instead are literary forms worthy of the recognition reserved for traditional literature. Discussion of genre identification ranges from the standard forms of literary criticism embodied in Aristotle’s mimesis and poesis to innovative and possibly controversial points of view such as a theory of humor, a philosophy of time, and a detailed analysis of Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat. The essays provide not only a detailed study of literary elements but also the historical treatment of the material, its commercial use, and its relationship to similar literary forms such as the gothic tale and horror fiction. While few of the essayists agree with one another, they all contribute creative insights to the debate.

Using photographs from the National Library's collection, Ennis introduces us to Australia from the 1840's to the present as we have never seen it before - at peace and at war, and in all its splendour and ordinary dailiness, as seen through the cameras of Charles Bayliss, Samuel Sweet, Peta Hill and many others. After the Civil War, the Townsends of Carolina especially and those that migrated to Mississippi, Texas, Tennessee and other pioneer settlements began to seek thier heritage. Perhaps family bibles and knowlege of early Quaker meetings were resourceful for Dunn's Quaker's and those Western Bladen folk. Before long a Richard Townsend the weathest land owner south of Lumberton, N.C. named his ahbury pioneers "Raynham". He produced the finest antibellum sons in the region, but few of the scattered "Townsends" in our developing land recorded who begot who and by whom, for posterity. After FDR's funding provided for Harlee's Kinfolk, some family matching began to take place. I began my quest in 1989, and looked backwards to Thomas born about 1725. The book is a tale of how this search began, was done, and it list the details of discovery. I draw conclusions lost in time for almost 200 years. The book developed in 30 years of research. It is intimate, base, and tells it like it was. You will enjoy the longserving quest for an answer. Daniel V. Townsend, High Point, NC

Over the last decade, critical theories of different kinds have had an enormous impact on many different disciplines and practices. Intersections is the first book to survey comprehensively this impact on Architecture, providing sixteen essays that intersect a particular critical theory with specific architectural ideas, projects and events. An extended essay by the editors gives an in-depth introduction to the subject. Essays range from psychoanalysis and interiors; colonialism and modern urbanism; gender and the renaissance; to heteroptopia and Las Vegas. Contributors come from Europe and the USA, and include Iain Borden, Zeynep Celik, Sarah Chaplin, Beatriz Colomina, Darell Fields, Murray Fraser, Diane Ghirado, Joe Kerr, Clive Knights, Neil Leach, Barbara Penner, Jane Rendell, Katherine Shonfield, Helen Thomas, Jeremy Till, Henry Urbach and Sarah Wigglesworth.

Development of a Safety Evaluation Procedure for Identifying High risk Signalized Intersections in the Virginia Department of Transportation s Northern Virginia District

This research was undertaken to develop an evaluation procedure to identify high-risk four-legged signalized intersections in VDOT's Northern Virginia district by traffic movements and times of day. By using the developed procedure, traffic engineers are expected to be able to identify signalized intersections where the traffic crash occurrences under different traffic conditions for different times of day are more frequent than would normally be expected. Using generalized linear models such as negative binomial models, one safety performance function was estimated for each of nine crash population reference groups formed by three traffic crash patterns (crash patterns 1, 4, and 6) and four times of day (A.M. peak, mid day, P.M. peak, and evening off peak). Crash pattern 1 is a same-direction crash (rear-end, sideswipe or angle crash) that occurs after exiting the intersection; crash pattern 4 is a right-angle crash between two adjacent straight-through vehicle movements in the intersection; and crash pattern 6 is an angle or head-on or opposite sideswipe crash between a straight-through vehicle movement and an opposing left-turn vehicle movement in the intersection. The procedure developed in this study is based on the empirical Bayes (EB) method. Additional data do not need to be collected in order to use the EB procedure because all the data required for applying the EB procedure should be obtainable from VDOT's crash database and from Synchro input data that are already available to traffic engineers for traffic signal phase plans. Thus, the EB procedure is cost-effective and readily applicable. For easy application of the EB procedure, an EB spreadsheet was developed using Microsoft Excel, and a users' guide was prepared. These are available from the author upon request.

Comprised of fourteen chapters, the book opens with studies of Louis Feuillade, Jean Painlevé, Jean Vigo, and Georges Franju. In each case the author finds original points of reference and cross-reference to other film-makers, and visual artists, particularly within modernism. Successful as free-standing short essays on their subject, the chapters also situate the work of these film-makers less within the context of French cinema history, than within other cinema histories and intellectual traditions. This is an important gesture both in terms of the general architecture of the book, and in terms of its commitment to reclaiming the work of these figures for a wide community of film and cinema studies teachers, students, and enthusiasts, particularly those interested in developing (or disagreeing with!) alternative approaches to the history and language of cinema. Undoubtedly, Intersections is a provocative and challenging read, but that does not make it any less urgent or necessary.

This report documents the development of guidelines for the decision whether to install a traffic signal at a marginally warranted intersection. The recommendations are based on field and simulation studies of a number of intersections across Texas which were identified as marginally warranted by various Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) districts. The research included both delay and accident studies. The TEXAS simulation model was used for the delay studies. Eight different intersection geometries and twelve generic 24-hour volume patterns representing marginally warranted conditions were simulated.
