The proliferation and universal adoption of the Internet has made it become the key information transport platform of our time. Congestion occurs when resource demands exceed the capacity, which results in poor performance in the form of low network utilization and high packet loss rate. The goal of congestion control mechanisms is to use the network resources as efficiently as possible. The research work in this thesis is centered on finding ways to address these types of problems and provide guidelines for predicting and controlling network performance, through the use of suitable mathematical tools and control analysis. The first congestion collapse in the Internet was observed in 1980's. To solve the problem, Van Jacobson proposed the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) congestion control algorithm based on the Additive Increase and Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) mechanism in 1988. To be effective, a congestion control mechanism must be paired with a congestion detection scheme. To detect and distribute network congestion indicators fairly to all on-going flows, Active Queue Management (AQM), e.g., the Random Early Detection (RED) queue management scheme has been developed to be deployed in the intermediate nodes. The currently dominant AIMD congestion control, coupled with the RED queue in the core network, has been acknowledged as one of the key factors to the overwhelming success of the Internet. In this thesis, the AIMD/RED system, based on the fluid-flow model, is systematically studied. In particular, we concentrate on the system modeling, stability analysis and bounds estimates. We first focus on the stability and fairness analysis of the AIMD/RED system with a single bottleneck. Then, we derive the theoretical estimates for the upper and lower bounds of homogeneous and heterogeneous AIMD/RED systems with feedback delays and further discuss the system performance when it is not asymptotically stable. Last, we develop a general model for a class of multiple-bottleneck networks and discuss the stability properties of such a system. Theoretical and simulation results presented in this thesis provide insights for in-depth understanding of AIME/RED system and help predict and control the system performance for the Internet with higher data rate links multiplexed with heterogeneous flows.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the next big challenge for the research community. The IPv6 over low power wireless personal area network (6LoWPAN) protocol stack is considered a key part of the IoT. In 6LoWPAN networks, heavy network traffic causes congestion which significantly degrades network performance and impacts on quality of service aspects. This book presents a concrete, solid and logically ordered work on congestion control for 6LoWPAN networks as a step toward successful implementation of the IoT and supporting the IoT application requirements. The book addresses the congestion control issue in 6LoWPAN networks and presents a comprehensive literature review on congestion control for WSNs and 6LoWPAN networks. An extensive congestion analysis and assessment for 6LoWPAN networks is explored through analytical modelling, simulations and real experiments. A number of congestion control mechanisms and algorithms are proposed to mitigate and solve the congestion problem in 6LoWPAN networks by using and utilizing the non-cooperative game theory, multi-attribute decision making and network utility maximization framework. The proposed algorithms are aware of node priorities and application priorities to support the IoT application requirements and improve network performance in terms of throughput, end-to-end delay, energy consumption, number of lost packets and weighted fairness index.

It concluded that CWV is too conservative to support many bursty applications and does not provide an incentive to encourage use by application designers. Instead, application designers often avoid generating variable-rate traffic by padding idle periods, which has been shown to waste network resources. CWV is therefore shown to not provide an acceptable solution for variable-rate traffic. In response to this shortfall, a new modification to TCP, TCP-JAGO, is proposed. This allows variable-rate traffic to restart quickly after an inactive (i.e., idle) period and to effectively utilise available network resources while sending at a lower rate than the available rate (i.e., during an application-limited period). The analysis in Chapter five shows that JAGO provides faster convergence to a steady-state rate and improves throughput by more efficiently utilising the network. TCP-JAGO is also shown to provide an appropriate response when congestion is experienced after restart. Variable-rate TCP traffic can also be impacted by the Initial Window algorithm at the start or during the restart of a session. Chapter six considers this problem, where TCP has no prior indication of the network state. A recent proposal for a larger initial window is analysed. Issues and advantages of using a large IW over a range of scenarios are discussed. The thesis concludes by presenting recommendations to improve TCP support for bursty applications. This also provides an incentive for application designers to choose TCP for variable-rate traffic.

This brief proposes that the keys to internet cross-layer optimization are the development of non-standard implicit primal-dual solvers for underlying optimization problems, and design of jointly optimal network protocols as decomposition of such solvers. Relying on this novel design-space oriented approach, the author develops joint TCP congestion control and wireless-link scheduling schemes for wireless applications over Internet with centralized and distributed (multi-hop) wireless links. Different from the existing solutions, the proposed schemes can be asynchronously implemented without message passing among network nodes; thus they are readily deployed with current infrastructure. Moreover, global convergence/stability of the proposed schemes to optimal equilibrium is established using the Lyapunov method in the network fluid model. Simulation results are provided to evaluate the proposed schemes in practical networks.
