The two-phase flow interior ballistic code XNOVAKTC (XKTC) has been modified to include the effects of propellant grain fracture. An increase in propellant surface is related to the level of intergranular stress in the propellant bed, caused either by local bed compaction associated with the ignition wave or by grain impact against, most likely, the projectile base. The user specifies the increase in propellant surface to be associated with the level of intergranular stress. An increase in local gas production follows directly from the increase in burning surface; interphase heat transfer and drag may similarly be linked to intergranular stress. This improved XKTC is used to illustrate the interior ballistic effects of grain fracture for two charges at two temperatures. Pressure waves in guns have long been linked to localized ignition and the distribution of ullage in the chamber; propellant fracture resulting from associated increases in intergranular stress are shown in this study to provide a link to higher breech pressures as well. The AGARD Propulsion and Energetics Panel held its 66th B Specialists' Meeting 9-11 Sep 1985 to provide scientists, development engineers, and applications specialists with a broad overview of advancing technology and experimental techniques in interior ballistics of liquid and solid propellant guns. This report summarizes and evaluates the 21 papers presented at the meeting. IBHVG2, which stands for Interior Ballistics of High Velocity Guns, version 2, is a lumped-parameter, interior ballistic computer code. The code, which was developed at the BRL, is an updated version of the classic Baer Frankle interior ballistic code. IBHVG2 is used for calculation of interior ballistic trajectories, including gas pressure, projectile displacement and projectile velocity as a function of time. The code treats both regular and deterred propellants. It contains powerful variational and searching capabilities, so that it can, for example, search and find the best propellant dimensions, given the maximum allowable gas pressure. This report thoroughly documents IBHVG2, so that all of its many features can be used effectively. The report contains a detailed description of the range of possible user input and description of both the algorithms embodied along with the FORTRAN subroutines which implement them. There are also complete examples of input and output from the code. Although the code has been written to be as generally applicable as possible, the report has a short section describing modifications that are necessary to enable the code to run on various computers and compiler combinations. A machine-readable copy of the code can be obtained by contacting the authors of this report.

Current interest in a regenerative liquid monopropellant gun in the United States is based on experimental test data in calibers from 25mm to 105mm.
