This title addresses the commercial justification for the adoption of a new modus operandi in asset health management, and its impact on business strategy and servitization of technology. The book tackles the most important questions on the transformation of business from selling a product, and deriving future income from spare part sales, to selling a service in which income is received in return for effective maintenance of the asset.

Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) is a relatively new subject, with its roots back in the space sector of the early 1990s. Although many of the papers written around that time did not refer to it as IVHM, the fundamental principles of considering an integrated end-to-end system to monitor the overall health of the asset were clearly visible. As the subject of Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) and its associated technologies have grown up, businesses are making the transformation from selling a product to selling a service. This can be viewed as a positive disruption, as a r.

Although the concept of Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) can be complex in its implementation, it is essentially based upon a simple idea: the more you know about a particular machine’s ability to function, the quicker you can act to prevent malfunctioning. This rapidly developing area of engineering seeks to enable better management of both the vehicle and vehicle fleet health. Use of IVHM can improve vehicle reliability, safety, and reduce unnecessary, unscheduled maintenance through the use of diagnostic and prognosis systems that monitor data and overall vehicle health. From an initial idea by the SAE IVHM Steering Group, these books have been collaboratively written by experts from academia, research and industry, and represent the collective voice of the most qualified authorities in the field. This groundbreaking set addresses both basic and advanced concepts critical for the understanding of IVHM, along with the commercial justification for the adoption of a new modus operandi in asset health management, and its impact on business strategy and technology. The three volume set includes: Integrated Vehicle Health Management: Perspectives on an Emerging Field, Integrated Vehicle Health Management: Business Case Theory and Practice, Integrated Vehicle Health Management: The Technology.

" ... Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) is the unified capability of a system of systems (SoS) to assess the current or future state of the member system health, and integrate it within a framework of available resources and operational demand. As systems complexities have increased, so have system support costs, driven by more frequent and often enigmatic subsystem failures. IVHM strategies can be used to mitigate these issues by taking a Systems of Systems view. Combined with advanced decision support methods, this approach can be used to more effectively predict, isolate, schedule, and repair failed subsystems, reducing platform support costs and minimizing platform down time. Integrated Vehicle Health Management- System of Systems Integration brings together ten seminal SAE technical papers addressing the challenges and solutions to maintaining highly complex vehicles. The strategy requires that the IVHM system must provide actionable decision support to operators and maintainers, informing platform operational capabilities and maintenance procedures. The goal is to prevent a given component from degrading to the point of failure or predictable impending failure. Specifications should also reflect a common means for communicating this information to other health- ready IVHM system components."--

Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) is defined herein as the capability to efficiently perform checkout, testing, and monitoring of space transportation vehicles, subsystems, and components before, during, and after operational This includes the ability to perform timely status determination, diagnostics, and prognostics. IVHM must support fault-tolerant response including system/subsystem reconfiguration to prevent catastrophic failures; and IVHM must support the planning and scheduling of post-operational maintenance. The purpose of this document is to establish the rationale for IVHM and IVHM research and technology planning, and to develop technical goals and objectives. This document is prepared to provide a broad overview of IVHM for technology and advanced development activities and, more specifically, to provide a planning reference from an avionics viewpoint under the OAST Transportation Technology Program Strategic Plan. The sequence - sense - acquire - transfer - analyze - act - feeds the information (processed data) on the asset's health into the Operations or Management control center. Here, decisions can be made on maintenance actions with knowledge of the supply chain status, MRO loading, etc., provided by Maintenance and Logistics systems.

"This is the third book SAE has published on IVHM. The scope of this book was to return to the, now familiar, taxonomy and investigate each of the broad theme areas of IVHM in more detail. The aim was to provide a bridge between the introduction to the subject, covered in the first book, and technical papers describing new work. This book is basically in three parts: the technology chapters (2-9), then the Applications chapter (10), before the Emerging Technologies (11). The contributions made in these sections are now summarized in this order, before drawing the book to its conclusion"-Provided by publisher.

"SAE International formed an IVHM (Integrated Vehicle Health Management) Steering Group in the fall of 2010. The idea reflected the large number of groups, within SAE's organization, that deal with health management of systems or subsystems (but without the integrated, holistic view of the vehicle asset or fleet). The newly formed group, through the IVHM HM-1 technical group, proceeded to organize an IVHM technical track for the SAE AeroTech meeting in Toulouse in October 2011 and also had the idea for a book on IVHM that could be handed out to participants to promote engagement in this exciting new field. The book: Integrated Vehicle Health Management: Perspectives on an Emerging Field [Jennions 2011] was the result and, surprisingly, it spawned a trilogy of books, of which this is the fourth! This current book, the fourth and (maybe) last in the series, covers the broad area of implementation and lessons learned. It endeavours to draw upon the experience that has been gained by fielding the technologies that have been discussed through the first three books. By its very nature, the insight in fielding these technologies comes not only from the aerospace sector but from a number of other interesting and challenging areas. As such, this book has sought out authors from sectors such as computer forensics and biotech, as well as rail. It is also important that some of the lessons to be learned are not purely technical but involve human factors and issues such as trust in data and IVHM systems, issues that will also be covered here. It is hoped that through books such as this, time and cost can be taken out of the implementation of new systems and IVHM can realize its true value in the marketplace"--Provided by publisher.
