The Young, the Restless, and the Dead captures the spirit of Canadian filmmakers through interviews with the most accomplished and dynamic of yesterday’s, today’s, and tomorrow’s film greats. Funny, provocative, and enlightening, the filmmakers reflect on their careers and explore with the interviewers the issues that challenge them. This book features an interview with a late director (Jean-Claude Lauzon) whose work is recognized in the canon as outstanding; interviews with filmmakers who are accomplished in their fields and have to their credit a sizeable body of work (Blake Corbet, Andrew Currie, Brent Carlson, Guy Maddin, Lynne Stopkewich, Anne Wheeler, Gary Burns, and Mina Shum); and an interview with a young director new to the field (Michael Dowse). Together these players in the Canadian film scene capture the energy, success, and tribulations of a fascinating cultural industry. The Young, the Restless, and the Dead is the first volume in a series of interviews with key cultural creators in the field of cinema. It seeks to bring to a wide audience the insights and emotions, the trials and achievements of significant figures in Canadian film. George Melnyk talks about The Young, the Restless, and the Dead with Eric Volmers of the Calgary Herald. Read the interview online.

Loser Goes First

It all begins on Christmas morning, 1978. Dan Kennedy is ten years old and wants a black Gibson Les Paul guitar, the kind Peter Frampton plays. It will be his passport to the coolest (only) band in the neighborhood—Jokerz. He doesn’t get it. Instead, his parents present him with what they think he wants most, a real-estate loan calculator (called the Loan Arranger) and a maroon velour pullover shirt with a tan stripe across the chest. It is the first of what will become a lifetime of various-sized failures, misunderstandings, comical humiliations, and just plain silly choices that have dogged this “hipster Proust of youthful loserdom,” as author Jerry Stahl has so eloquently called Mr. Kennedy. Dan’s hilarious and painfully awkward youth soon develops into a . . . uh . . . hilarious and painfully awkward adulthood. His first two choices for university are Yale (Lit or Drama) and Harvard (Business), so he reviews his high school transcripts and decides on Butte Community College in Oroville, California, where he studies for about four and a half weeks. We could go on here and describe in detail all of Dan’s good-natured stabs at ambition, but he, himself, sums it all up quite nicely: “If you’ve ever tried and failed miserably at being a rock star (no guitar/talent), a professional bass fisherman, an extra in the movie Sleepless in Seattle (guy drinking martini in bar while Tom Hanks makes a phone call), a Madison Avenue advertising executive, a clerk/towel person at a suburban health club (named Kangaroo Kourts), an espresso street-cart owner and operator (in the one neighborhood of that coffee-swilling town, Seattle, where, remarkably, no one really seems to drink coffee), a dot.com millionaire, an MTV VJ, or a forest fire fighter, this book is for you.” Along the way, a few lessons are learned and we are treated to one of the most original, riotously funny, unsentimental, and offbeat memoirs in recent history. Dan’s a favorite in McSweeney’s and at the very popular Moth readings in New York City. We should be happy that he failed so miserably at so many things—and took notes! From the Hardcover edition.

There are stories where the girl gets her prince, and they live happily ever after. (This is not one of those stories.) Jenna Lord's first sixteen years were not exactly a fairy tale. Her father is a controlling psycho and her mother is a drunk. She used to count on her older brother—until he shipped off to Iraq. And then, of course, there was the time she almost died in a fire. There are stories where the monster gets the girl, and everyone cries for his innocent victim. (This is not one of those stories either.) Mitch Anderson is many things: A dedicated teacher and coach. A caring husband. A man with a certain...magnetism. And there are stories where it's hard to be sure who's a prince and who's a monster, who is a victim and who should live happily ever after. (These are the most interesting stories of all.) Drowning Instinct is a novel of pain, deception, desperation, and love against the odds—and the rules.

Michael Lewis is a master at dissecting the absurd: after skewering Wall Street in his national bestseller Liar's Poker, he packed his mighty pen and set out on the 1996 campaign trail. As he follows the men who aspire to the Oval Office, Lewis discovers an absurd mix of bravery and backpedaling, heroic possibility and mealy-mouthed sound bytes, and a process so ridiculous and unsavory that it leaves him wondering if everyone involved—from the journalists to the candidates to the people who voted—isn't ultimately a loser. The contenders: Pat Buchanan: becomes the first politician ever to choose a black hat over a white one. Phil Gramm: spends twenty million dollars to convince voters of his fiscal responsibility. John McCain: makes the fatal mistake of actually speaking his mind. Alan Keyes: checks out of a New Hampshire hotel and tells the manager another candidate will be paying his bill. Steve Forbes: refuses to answer questions about his father's motorcycles. Bob Dole: marches through the campaign without ever seeming to care. Losers is a wickedly funny, unflinching look at how America really goes about choosing a President.

This is a zany romp through the modern American landscape, with the tour guide one Bingo Sherman, a possible descendant of the controversial Civil War general. Bingo, a joyous cross between Salinger’s Holden Caulfield and Kafka’s Joseph K attacks life with a zest that belies his Florida Panhandle origins. In this coming of age novel the action moves briefly from Miami’s South Beach to New York’s Upper West Side then back to South Beach again. Bingo is a seeker with a difference: he has absolutely no idea what he is seeking and knows only what he is not ready to settle for. The characters he encounters along the way serve to both open his eyes as well as to toughen him up for life’s many trials still ahead. Throughout the novel looms the almost mythical figure of Ronald McDonald, Bingo’s childhood hero for whom he still harbors a soft spot in his heart. Everyone Loves Ronald McDonald strikes just the right tone between irreverence and acute observation, and promises a rollicking good experience for anyone with common or even uncommon good sense.

Private investigator David Spandau, an ex-stuntman familiar with the ins and outs of Hollywood—a smart, tough, and wickedly funny observer of la vie L.A.—finds his patience almost sapped when he’s hired to protect actor Bobby Dye from a blackmailing scheme gone wrong. Dye—young, brash, and on the verge of becoming a major star—has been set up by gangster Richie Stella, a nightclub owner and drug dealer with dreams of becoming a Hollywood producer. And he has a movie perfect for Dye. Problem is, it’s the worst script anyone’s ever read. But Richie is not easy to say no to, and when he retaliates, the game becomes deadly for more than a few of its players. Charged with the elements of all great L.A. noir—crackling dialogue, fast-paced plot, and seedy, jaded characters—Loser’s Town is a deftly written thriller and a gruesomely hilarious depiction of what goes on beneath those white letters on the mountainside

“A perceptive, poignant novel of middle-school identity and friendship” from the author of Prettiest Doll (The Horn Book). Sarah promised Marjorie when they were five years old that they would be best friends forever. But that was before seventh grade, when everything changed—everything except Marjorie. While Sarah wants to meet new people and try new things, Marjorie still likes doing the same things they always did. It seems the more time the two girls spend together, the more time Sarah wants to spend apart. How did a promise that was so easy to make become so hard to keep? With beautifully drawn characters and vivid details, this incisive novel portrays middle school in all its complexity—both the promise of what is to come and the pain of what must be left behind. This ebook includes a sample chapter of Prettiest Doll. “In this quiet, strongly realistic novel, Willner-Pardo explores the intricacies of preadolescent social life, where the worst possible thing is to be ‘weird.’” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “The sensitively drawn and satisfying conclusion will have girls nodding their heads with understanding as Sarah struggles with the promise she made years ago. A heartwarming story about life’s unexpected lessons, through the eyes of a girl experiencing them for the first time.” —School Library Journal “The dialogue is right-on, and readers will recognize the vicious social warfare from the lunchroom to the school bus.” —Booklist

Throughout most of the 20th century, from World War I until his death in 1993, America poet and pacifist William Stafford remained convinced that wars don't work. In his poetry and other writing, he showed that it is crucial to think independently when fanatics act and to speak for reconciliation when nations take sides. This inspiring volume collects the antiwar writings of this lifelong advocate for peace: journal excerpts, pacifist poems, interviews, and an account of his own near-hanging at the hands of American patriots. In thought-provoking passages sure to strike a chord today, he assesses U.S. political habits and suggests that there are always alternative approaches to aggression. This powerful book about nonviolence includes never-before-published excerpts from William Stafford's daily journal from 1951 to 1991.

Perfect Turkeys is the second in a series of books, that examines (through short stories) the often hilarious, and always funny life and times of Michael Devin Hughes. Whether searching for the Perfect Turkey for Thanksgiving, or trying to locate the Fig Queen's House in Brewster Hollow, or reserving a hotel room with a chain hotel, Michael Devin Hughes complicates the most simple of tasks. Though quadruple-divorced, Hughes maintains relations with his ex-wives and children, as the short stories, "Dancing With My Daughter," "A Walk at Sunset With My Son," and "Chief of Personal Appearance" reveal. Michael Devin Hughes' obsessive nature is deliciously illustrated in "Lemon Bars." His humorous bond with his father is wonderfully amplified in "The Buffet Line." And Hughes incredibly bad timing is hilariously detailed in "Dinner and Railroad Crossings."

A story about the will? Doesn't sound particularly exciting or extraordinary. Maybe not. Depends on what a person goes through to discover their will. I see. You mean a will to live? Yes. And that's what American Loser is about? Primarily, yes. About discovering how powerful a person's will can be. That's certainly more interesting. Who might read such a story? Someone who's been in pain; who's questioned their own existence and considered maybe not being around tomorrow. Anyone else who might like this story? People amused by extreme behavior: sexual oddity and odysseys, drug use, and other absurdities that arise from passionate living.

Spurred by boredom and maybe a touch of mid-life crisis, a political science professor quits the security of academic life and with just the cash in his pocket, a worn-out station wagon and a cargo of books hits the road in search of something different. economy and the highest unemployment rate since the Great Depression. His new colleagues include neer-do-wells, zanies, bohemians, underachievers, and people temporarily or permanently down on their luck. He joins the new poor an unprecedented class of downwardly mobile people for whom university degrees, diligence, and doing everything right have lost their force and he becomes himself a misfit who cant, or wont, hang onto a job. During his travels he makes a catch-as-catch-can living as an adjunct professor, a field worker, a department store clerk, a civil servant, a door-to-door salesman, a janitor, a car washer, a day laborer, even a seller of blood his own. This is a close-up view of the dark (and now largely neglected) side of the 1980s, also of a subculture which lives just below the surface of middle-class American life and which shares neither in its affluence nor its aspirations. Its a fouryear stroll on the wrong side of the tracks, a tale reminiscent of George Orwells Down and Out in Paris and London, yet leavened with a dash of humor.

If twenty-five years can discover the internet, the cell phone, this thing called the iPod, can twenty-five years discover the secret of a girl murdered, abandoned, by the side of the road? That is the haunting premise of Bury This, an impressionistic literary thriller about the murder of a young girl in small-town Michigan in 1979. Beth Krause was by all intents a good little girl – member of the church choir, beloved daughter of doting parents, friend to the downtrodden. But dig a little deeper into any small town, and conflicts and jealousies begin to appear. And somewhere is that heady mix lies the answer to what really happened to Beth Krause. Her unsolved murder becomes the stuff of town legend, and twenty-five years later the case is re-ignited when a group of film students start making a documentary on Beth’s fateful life. The town has never fully healed over the loss of Beth, and the new investigation calls into light several key characters: her father, a WWII vet; her mother, once the toast of Manhattan; her best friend, abandoned by her mother and left to fend for herself against an abusive father; and the detective, just a rookie when the case broke, haunted by his inability to bring Beth’s murderer to justice. All of these passions will collide once the identity of Beth’s murderer is revealed, proving once again that some secrets can never stay buried.
