You'll hear me throughout this book talk about SAFETY, SAFETY, and SAFETY! You can never be too safe while being around these huge animals! We'll discuss the safety issue in depth at different points in the book. I know you must have lots of questions - that's why have I prepared this book: To help anyone of any age to learn all the basics about horseback riding prior to getting on a horse for the first time. There are many things you need to understand before mounting and riding for the first time. This book will take you item by item through all of these critical concepts to help you understand how a horse thinks, how he's made, his physical characteristics, etc. You will also have to prepare yourself both physically and mentally. Riding horses is like no other sport - you see, if you play golf, tennis, swim, jog, play football or basketball, lift weights.... whatever it is (except for some team interaction) how well you do in that sport is pretty much determined by what YOU can do physically. How much speed, strength, finesse, coordination, etc. you can develop determines how well you'll do. But, when riding, you now have a partner-the horse-who, unlike a tennis racquet or golf club-has a mind of his own. Success depends on you working together as a team. Plus, your physical build and shape will also determine how well your horse can perform. Together you are a team and you can help each other out by being physically fit. Horseback riding also helps you develop specific muscle groups that are not worked regularly in other sports In the horse world, your success is determined by how well you can control, understand and harmonize with a 1,000-pound animal that has superior strength, is faster and has a better-developed nervous system than you. The way you overcome these strengths in a horse is to understand what the horse's limitations are. Understanding the horse's body, what makes him tick and how the horse's brain works is the key to controlling him. If you don't figure this out and understand the horse then you'll constantly be fighting him and your experience will go sour. This book presents an in-depth, qualitative exploration of the practice of horse-riding by “disabled” and “non-disabled” riders and their horses. Situated as part of an “affective turn” within human geography, creative and original use is made of poststructuralist theory to bring together animal studies and disability studies in order to decentre the human as we think about the social. Eighteen months of multi-sited performance ethnography “on the hoof” were conducted with riders recruited from local riding schools, an internet forum and three Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) groups. The study employed various methods, including diary-keeping, participant observation and video-recording of riding activities, in order to capture moments of horse-human relating. Through these methods, the embodied expressions of horses are taken seriously as demonstrative of their individual thoughts and intentions.

The author, Ann Boudart, cumulates years of experience in yoga and in horse riding as she started to ride at the age of five. It is only but natural she fuses both disciplines whatever the circumstances, when grooming the horses, when giving lessons. The highest purpose of yoga is to reach sam dhi, or state of deep meditation, a state which is attained when the meditator has completely melted in their object of meditation. For Ann, sam dhi was first consciously reached when riding Orixa, a Lusitanian stallion. Since then she achieves sam dhi when she is with horses and people. In her book, she gives you hints and postures to reach this goal. She describes how equiyoga can help riders and non-riders to reach fullmindness. EquiYoga differs from other books on this topic as Ann is the first yogini to comment the Yoga Sutra's of Pata jali, the bible of yoga, from a horse rider point of view. It is a way to show everyone can apply the sutra's in their daily life, whatever their background, their profession, their sport, their family's environment. You can also find how yoga can help when you take care of your horse, when you ride it! Fathom the myth of the centaur by taking EquiYoga into your life!"

The sport of Endurance Riding was established in the UK in the 1960's and was controlled by various organisations until Endurance Great Britain was created in 2001 to govern the sport, from the grass route leisure rider to the international teams. There has not been a book published in the UK covering endurance since 1999 and the author, Karen David, wished to address this. The book is aimed at all levels of endurance rider from the first timer to the seasoned campaigner, with encouragement and advice given throughout. The chapters cover: a history of the sport up to the birth of Endurance Great Britain; how endurance is organised and how to progress through the various levels; selecting a suitable horse; how to begin competing; how to ride a successful endurance ride; feeding and nutrition; alternative therapies; shoeing; training; transporting the horse incorporating UK Legislation; equipment; competing and the support team necessary to help the combination achieve their potential.

The book provides an introduction to fascia, covers how your body reacts to injury, and addresses common symptoms such as pain, tension, and inflammation. Also included are personal stories from riders who have had success with these methods. The format of the book allows readers to start at the beginning and read all the way through or to go straight to the sections that address their particular condition.
